THE EWINGS OF GEORGIA – OUR ANCESTORS

Chapter XXXVIII includes information on JOHN EWING and his family, John being one of the four sons of William Ewing born about1709. Names of some of John’s children were located on page 41 of the Census of 1788 taken of BIG SPRING PRESBYTERIANCHURCH Newville, Cumberland Co., PA. Most of the names were found in the 1806 will of John Ewing of Pleasant Township, FairfieldCo., Ohio. Two of the younger sons were on the will but not on the 1788 Census. One, “John, Jr.” claimed by a descendant was onneither list. We compare the two lists for your review at this time:

“Our William” who came to Georgia: Martha married Joseph VanHorn 22 Nov 1792; Mary married James Duncan 5 June 1798; JamesEwing married Eleanor Gillespie 25 Apr 1809; James Ewing married 2 sister, Elizabeth Gillespie 21 Oct 1813.nd

Missing from the will are John Ewing, Jr. and James Ewing. It is believed they already had their inheritances as had Martha VanHorn,probably Mathew and Rebecca. The two younger sons were Thomas “born 1782 in PA Census, OH and David born 20 Oct 1784”(Tombstone).

Chapter XXXVIII does not list all the Deeds of EWING who came to GEORGIA. There were too many but we traced the children ofThomas Ewing died 1800 SC son of William of Prince Edward Co., Va. Chapter XXVII. Also his nephew Samuel Ewing son of Williamson of William of Prince Edward Co., VA. We also traced Samuel Ewing and Mary Daniel, son of George Ewing of Wythe Co., Va. sonof Samuel Ewing died 1758 in Prince Edward Co., VA, Chapter XXVI. Both of those men were half-brothers to Nathaniel Ewing of CecilCo., MD. We list below indications that four sons of above John Ewing died 1807 in Ohio may have come to Georgia but only Williamstayed.

1 John Ewing, Jr. is, probably, the John Ewing who was to receive a grant of 450 acres in Franklin Co., GA in 1786. We do not havest

the date of his Application but in HISTORICAL SKETCHES by Rev. G.H. Cartledge 1960 page 35 states “The first migration fromCumberland Co., Pennsylvania to New Hope in Northeast Georgia, took place in 1786 and Allen Leeper, William Hodge and othersstarted from Pennsylvania to Georgia in 1785.” Franklin Co., GA Deed Book N page 100 John Ewins and wife, Elizabeth purchasedof Andrew Erwin about 1784 but no date of actual possession. Wilkes Co., GA Deed Bk UU page 28. John & Elizabeth purchased200 acres on William Creek in 1791 recorded 5 Aug 1804. John Ewins bought land from John Holmes who had owned land “ourWilliam Ewing” purchased.

2 William Ewing is the next eldest son of John Ewing died 1806. Tho he is ned, first, in the Will, I found William paying tax in 1802nd

in Jackson Co. GA in Capt. Aaron Woods District. He had 50 acres of 3 Quality land that had been Granted to FEW on the watersrd

of Beech Creek next to Littleton Riggins. He paid 37 ½¢. The same is true for the years 1803 and 1805. In 1807 he is taxed on 100acres in Jackson Co., GA in Capt. John W. Shacklefords District. It was 3 quality land and was purchased from Joseph Camponrd

the 27 May 1807 and paid $400 for it. It had been granted to Spratlin. It was “on Marburys/Marburg's Creek and bordered Evans.”Jackson Co., Georgia was created in 1796 from Franklin Co., GA. (I found no Deeds to this William Ewing in Franklin Co., GA.)A copy of this Deed and others relating to William and Hannah Ewing are in the first few pages of this chapter. See ahead .

3 Mathew Ewing is the next son of John Ewing died 1806 and is mentioned in the will of John Ewing. He is also on the 1788 Censusrd

of Big Spring Presbyterian Church. He was paid £2.0.0 from the Estate of Allen Leeper on 10 July 1791 by Allen's sons, JamesLeeper and Charles Leeper. (See Inventory #61; Account #27 Cumberland Co., PA Courthouse, Carlisle, Pennsylvania Office ofWills and Orphan's Court Records). In 1793, Mathew Ewing enlisted as a Private in Capt. John Hodge's Company of the ElbertCounty, Georgia Militia. He enlisted the same day as his cousins William Allen David Ewing and Thomas Ewing (whose Deedhe had witnessed the year before.) By 1800, he is back in Franklin Co., PA, Metal twp. which had been taken from Cumberland Co.,PA. By 1806, he is in Pleasant twp. Ohio when his father died. He and wife, Mary Maguire, bought the Pleasant twp. Fairfield Co.,Ohio land of his father from the others and sold it by 1810.

4 James Ewing is the next son of John Ewing died 1806 and is not mentioned in the 1806 will of John Ewing. He is,th

however, on the 1788 Census of Big Spring Presbyterian Church. We have mentioned before that he, like his sister

Martha Ewing VanHorn (wife of Joseph VanHorn) had already received a portion of their father's estate prior to his death. As JamesEwing was born in 1778 he would have been 22 years old when he enlisted in Jackson County, Georgia Militia, Volunteer Troops ofDragoons in the 2 Regiment. His enlistment is dated 15 June 1801. He was called “Gentleman” (a man of means) and was made a 1nd st

Lieutenant. I sincerely believe it was this man and not his cousin James Ewing born 1782 whose father, James Ewing, had died in 1791leaving him £36. That James did not receive his inheritance until 1804 after he became 21. That James did pay tax on land as “underage”in 1802, but would hardly have been called “Gentleman” in 1801 is my thinking on this.

The Deeds in Georgia are, at times, confusing being recorded in two counties for the same Deed as County lines were changing so fast.Madison Co., Ga was created 5 Dec 1811 from Clarke, Elbert, Franklin Jackson and Oglethorpe Counties! In Madison County Deed BookA page 3 dated 9 Dec 1809, James Ewing purchased of William Allen David Ewing 151 acres for which he paid $1,600. It bordered theSouth by South Fork of Broad River and North by John Mark's Land. William Allen David Ewing signed the Deed. It was not recordeduntil 1812. It is my belief that this is the James Ewing above, not the brother of William A. D. Ewing. The above James Ewing hadmarried Eleanor Gillespie in Big Spring Presbyterian Church on 25 April 1809 and brought her to Georgia, is my belief. Proof is in thefact that his younger cousin by the same name was in Bedford Co., TN and witnessed the counter-signing of Deed Book A page 200Madison Co., GA where William A.D. Ewing sold his last land through his “Lawful Attorney James L. Ewing”, his son, to Stephen Smithon 12 October 1815. All the descendants of James Ewing died 1791 moved to Tennessee with Allen Leeper.

James Ewing's wife, Eleanor Gillespie died prior to 21 October 1813 for that is when he married her younger sister, Elizabeth Gillespieboth daughters of George and Sarah (Young) Gillespie of what became Frankford twp. Cumberland Co., Pa. They were married at BigSpring Presbyterian Church. James was not on the 1810 Census of Cumberland Co., PA nor on the 1820. We “assume” he died after 1813.Elizabeth Ewing is buried in Big Spring Cemetery with inscription “Elizabeth Ewing daughter of George Gillespie, born 1790; died Jan16, 1846.” She is, also, shown as being received into the Church on 13 October 1822. It is my theory that she sold the Madison Co.,GA land and moved back to Cumberland Co., PA with her orphans. See page 356 which proved she and the children were living on HERland which they inherited when she died in 1846. She inherited it from her father, George Gillespie when he died. I suppose James Ewinghad lost all his money. He had paid an enormous sum of $1,600 for 150 acres in 1809. A few years later, 1815, the 562 ½ acres soldfor $1,200 showing the decrease in land values. They thought the land was “worn out”. This sale was recorded in Madison Co. DeedBook A page 200.

None of the daughters of John Ewing came to Georgia unless Jane Ewing the elder sister of our William Ewing came here to help himwith the children. There is another semi-elderly woman in the household of Green Berry Ewing in 1820 who may be Jane. We have noproof of course but she is not; shown in Pleasant Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio Census as being a part of the household of any of the otherbrothers and sisters.

This Chapter Outlines ALL references in Georgia to William Ewing of Jackson, Gwinnett, Walton and Newton County. We show he isseparate from William Allen David Ewing, his cousin, and William D. Ewing one of the sons of Samuel Ewing and Mary (Daniel) Ewingof Clarke Co., GA. See Chapter XXVI pages 217 George Ewing son of Samuel Ewing was father to Samuel Ewing who married MaryDaniel and moved to Georgia. Also, see page 219 for that Samuel Ewing and his children.

He was born 1821 so 53 and was exempt from service. This is my great grandfather Ewing, son of William and Hannah Ewing and fatherof Miles Elmore Ewing.

EWING, William S. - Private -Sept 9, 186l. Surrendered at Greensboro, N.C. April 26, 1865.

They are believed to be sons of Joseph Ewing of Fayette Co., GA, 1860- but living in DeKalb Co., GA in 1850. He had sons, Williamborn 1838 and Robert D. born 1844.

William S. Ewing is on the 1860 Census, Fayette Co., GA page 121, age 21 is a “track raiser”. Robert D. Ewing is still in the home of Joseph Ewing in 1860. I do not locate him again.

We have been unable to find who these two were. As they were Newton Co., GA men we felt sure they were “kin” to others.

• p 530 Whitworth, Richard A. - Private - Mar 1, 1863. Appointed Corporal. Wounded and captured at Deep Bottom, VA. August16, 1864. Died in Fortress Monroe, VA., hospital from exhaustion following amputation of right hip, Sept 7, 1864. [This is mygreat grandfather Whitworth, father of Antoinette Virginia Whitworth who married Miles Elmore Ewing and had 17 children oneof whom was my father, Lucius Grant Ewing.]

We know there are others who served whose names seemed not to get on lists. However, we have done our best to bring those we found. We looked through thousands of unindexed pages to find these.

My search here in Georgia Archives began with 3 bits of information. I knew only: 1. Miles Elmore Ewing, my grandfather, ran away to the Civil War with a cousin. 2. Jones Henderson Ewing and Eliza (Chapman) Ewing were the parents of Miles Elmore Ewing. 3. Miles Elmore Ewing married Antoinette Virginia Whitworth in Gwinnett Co., Ga. Their 17 children were born and raised there. They

were identified in a Family BIBLE.

My first search was in the Roster of Confederate Soldiers, Volume II, page 49 where I found the names of Miles E. Ewing and JosephEwing who had enlisted the same day! Both were “born in Newton Co., GA.” I had not known THAT! I searched the Census Recordsof Newton and Gwinnett Co., GA, the Deeds in Newton Co., GA and Tax Records in both places. Some Deeds in Gwinnett Co., GAhad been destroyed by fire. We were able to find enough to help find which EWING lived there early. The birth date in the Roster wasalmost correct for Miles E. Ewing!

I found two men named EWING on the 1820 Census Record of Gwinnett Co., GA one - a William Ewin. He was listed as head ofHousehold with “4 males under 10 years; 1 male 10-16; 1 male 16-26; 1 male over 45; 1 female under 10 years of age; 1 female age 10-16; 1 female 24-45.” So, it looks as if this man had a family consisting of 6 males plus himself and 3 females one of which was, surely,his wife. As counties were being formed so very rapidly in Georgia it was necessary to find the parent county of Gwinnett. I searched theDeeds of Jackson Co., GA and of Franklin, Co., GA until I found a William Ewing who purchased land there. I had also searched TaxRecords of all three counties as well as the other Ewing, Robert, of the 1820 Census]:

“William Ewing paid tax in 1802-1807 on 50 acres of land adjoining Littleton Riggins on Beech Creek in Jackson Co and hadoriginally been granted to one named Few.” There were numerous Few grants of land. I was unable to find if William Ewinghad purchased this land or if he were only renting.

GA DEED BOOK E page 569 reads: “This indenture made this 27 Day of May in the Year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seven and in the thirty-firstyear of American Independence, between Joseph Camp of one part and William Ewing of the other part witnesseth that for andin consideration of the sum of four hundred dollar paid by the said Ewing to said Camp the receipt whereof is herebyacknowledged that I have this day bargained, sold and confirmed unto the said William Ewing and do by these presents bargainsell and confirm unto the said William Ewing one hundred acres of land be the same more or less it being part of a tract of landgranted to Spratlin joining Thos. Camp's and beginning on a maple on the creek running north 45 E to a pine on Evans linethence N45W to a post oak thence S45W to a pine thence N70W to Benjamin Camp's fence thence along said fence to a blackgum on the creek from the __?__on the creek to the beginning corner. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of landtogether with all and singular the rights and titles and all appurtenances appertaining thereto unto said William Ewing his heirsand assigns forever, and the said Joseph Camp do warrant and forever defend the said land from all other claims, titles, orpersons forever unto the aforesaid Ewing, his heirs and assigns forever as witness my hand the day and year above mentioned.”Signed and Sealed /Signed/ JOSEPH CAMP [SEAL] and delivered in presence of us; A. This land in the 1809 Tax Digest of Jackson Co. was listed as being on Marburg's Creek next to Evans, granted originally to JamesSpratlin, 24 May 1781. Franklin Co. GA Deed Book C page 70, “James and wife Winnifred Spratlin”. In 1809 William Ewing paid taxesof 37 ½ cents on his land. James Spratlin and Winnifred had sold it to John Holmes for 100 English Pounds. John Holmes then soldit to Thomas Camp who sold it November 28, 1803 to Joseph Camp. William Ewing had received $414.48 from his father's estate.

1823, 7 May -WALTON Co. GEORGIA DEED BOOK E page 44 reads:

“This indenture made this 7 day of May in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Three betweenth

William Ewens (sic) of the one part and Eli Wha1ey of the other part, both of the same place, witnesseth that the said Ewens(sic) for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars the receipt whereof is here by acknowledged havegranted bargained sold and convey unto the said Eli Whaley his heirs and assigns all that tract or parcel of land lying and beingin st. and Cty [State and County] aforesaid and on the waters of Marberg's (sic) Creek and on the NE side containing onehundred acres more or less being a part of a survey granted to Spratling (sic) beginning on a maple on said creek running north45E to a pine on Evans old line, now McKnights, thence N45W to a post oake thence S45W to a pine thence N70W to SamuelWhaley's fence thence along the fence continuing a straight course until it strikes the said creak (sic) from thence down thecreak to the beginning corner, to have and to hold the said tract of land together with all and singular the rights members andappurtances belonging to the same or in any wise appertaining unto the said Eli Wha1ey his heirs, Extrs. and administratorswill warrant and forever defend against him his heirs and assigns and against the claim of every other person whatever the titles,in fee simple. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand the day and Date Above.”

1823, 6 October -NEWTON COUNTY, GEORGIA DEED BOOK A page 236 reads;

“This indenture made this 6 October in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and twenty three between William McCullers,th

Snr. of the county aforesaid of the one part and William Ewing of the County of Wa1ton of the other part, witnesseth that thesaid William McCullars for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred dollars to him in hand paid at or before the sealingand delivery of these presents the receipt whereof hath hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained sold and conveyed untothe said William Ewing his heirs and assigns all that tract or parcel of land situate and being in the ninth district of originallyHenry County, Georgia at the time of Surveying, but now of Newton and known in the plan of said Dist. by the east half of LotNo. 317 containing one hundred and one fourth acres be the same more or less having such shapes marks and forms as willmore fully appear by a Plat of the same to have and to hold the said Tract or parcel of land unto him the said William Ewinghis heirs and assigns together with all and singular the rights members and appurtenances unto the same in any mannerbelonging to his and their own proper use benefit and behoof forever in fee simple. Green Berry Ewing was living on this land on the 1830 Census with, probably, Hannah his mother, Rhoda his new wife, and Hannah'sunmarried Children. See ahead.

Hannah Ewens(sic) sold 160 acres of land on Marburg's Creek in Walton County to John Pepper, Sr. in 1837, ten years after her husband,William Ewing, had died. I found no record of the purchase of that land nor of the 50 acres on which William and Hannah Ewing wereliving on the 1802, Beech Creek Jackson Co. land which is, now, in Barrow County GA. Eli Whaley was living next door and JamesEwing was around the bend in the River. This was NOT William A. D. Ewing's land. See ahead.

1827, 20 February- NEWTON COUNTY, GEORGIA, COURT OF ORDINARY - Administrators and Guardians Bonds (1822-1851.Recorded 11 October 1827. pages 41 & 42. It reads :

“Know all men by these presents that we, Samuel Patillo and Hannah Ewing, John Byers and Joel Culpepper areheld and firmly bound into their Honors, the Justices of the Inferior Court sitting as a Court of Ordinary for saidCounty and their successors in offices in the just and full sum of $1,200 for the payment of sum to the saidJustices and their successors. We find ourselves our heirs, executors and Administrators in the whole and for the

whole sum jointly and severally and firmly by these presents sealed with out Seals and dated this 20 Day of February 1827. “This indenture made and entered into this April 20, 1837 between Hannah Evens (sic) of the County of NEWTON and stateaforesaid of the one part and John Pepper, Sr. of the county and state aforesaid of the other part, witnesseth that for and inconsideration of one hundred dollars to her in hand paid by the said J. Pepper the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, haththis day bargained sold and by these presents do fully bargain sell and confirm unto the said Pepper his heirs and assigns acertain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county aforesaid on the waters of Marbury's Creek containing one hundredand sixty acres more or less adjoining John Thompson's and Bobo land Wiley Kit? In 1823 William Ewing sold 100 acres to Eli Whaley in Walton Co. GA which had been taken from Gwinnett Co. GA where they hadlived prior to moving, 1823 to Newton Co. We have been unable to determine where this land came from. The other land was a Grantto Spratling. In 1820 Census a Samuel Peppers lived next door to William Ewing in Gwinnett Co. GA and this sale is made 17 years later.William Ewing died ten years before this sale was made.

The first 8 persons above we are positive are children of William and Hannah Ewing of Jackson, Gwinnett, Walton, and Newton Countiesin Georgia.

WHO WAS HANNAH WIFE OF WILLIAM EWING? Because William Ewing, believed to be our ancestor, was living on Beech Creek in, then, Jackson Co. Ga., we were not in a hurry toexamine other counties for the wife of William. We knew that Thomas Ewing, his cousin, had married Susan Barnett, daughter of Samueland Margaret Adel Barnett of Greene Co., Ga. We believed they either had attended the same Church or met somehow even tho the Counties did not seem as close as they probably were. Census Records of1850 and 1860 indicate that Hannah Ewing was born in Georgia.

Because William Ewing was on the tax Records with a number of near neighbors we looked them up for possible kinship. None of themproved anything. However, after we bought the Deeds you have seen and will see we kept noting the name Whaley sometimes spelledWhatley. One name, William Whaley, was on the Poll Tax of 1803 in Capt. Aaron Woods District next to William Ewing. On the otherside of William Ewing was an Eli Whaley with 100 acres of land that had been granted to Spratlin the same man who had been grantedthe land that William bought in 1807. So, as early as 1802 they were next door neighbors. It takes a year or so for Tax to catch up withDeeds.

Because of the two Whaley men I searched almost every County to find where one by that name had, perhaps, died and left a will. I didfind William Whaley in Greene Co., GA wrote his will there and it was recorded or “Registered on 27 August 1795”. There was no datebut it was in Greene Co., Ga. Wills and Administrations page 168. The will was almost impossible to read but I could make out “Propertyto be sold to educate the children. Wife, Hannah, and son Eli, to be the Executors “ It was witnessed by Nathaniel Whaley. 'A search ofNewton Co. records proved that Eli Whaley was born in 1773/4 and died in 1855 at age 81. He had married Mary Grace in 1798 at age25 and had children. William Whaley's children's ages were not all given: Esther Whaley; Levi Whaley (b1773/4); Patsy Whaley; HannahWhaley; William Whaley, (Jr); Samuel Whaley; Isaac Whaley. Daniels age was given as “6” and Betsy's age was “9”. Hannah (in 1820when they were in Gwinnett Co.) Gave her age “26-45” or born between 1775 and 1794. In 1830 in Newton Co with Green Berry Ewingher age was “40-50". In 1840 she was Head of Household in Newton Co. Ga. (next to Isaac Ewing) she was “40-50.” [This would pointto her age disagreeing with the 1820 Census. Was she sure when she was born?] In 1850 she was still in Newton Co., Ga. and her agewas given as “76 BORN IN GEORGIA”. If this is true then she was born in 1774 same” year plus or minus as Eli & Levi. On the 1860Tax Gwinnett County in home of MY GREAT GRANDFATHER Jones Henderson Ewing and she is listed as “Mother of Head ofHousehold, age 83, born in GEORGIA”! If that is so she was born in 1777.

So, Hannah Whaley, (if Whaley) was born sometime between 1776 and 1783. If born 1776 she was quite old to have had the last 5children. If born in 1783 she was 19 when first born and 42 when the last one born. As there are “gaps” in between she may have lostsome of her children.

I hope someone will be able to prove who Hannah Ewing wife of William Ewing truly was. Until then I shall continue to believe shewas Hannah Whaley, daughter of William and Hannah Whaley Sr. They lived in Greene Co., Ga., but three of their sons, William,Samuel and Eli lived in Jackson/Gwinnett/Walton/Newton Counties in Georgia. An interesting co-incidence. Agree?

In Hancock Co., GA Index to Deeds, I found in Index “D” that one Jesse Whatley sold to Eli Whatley land that had been owned byIgnatius Few of Wilkes Co. on page 143. (I do not have a copy.)

In Hancock Co., GA Index to Deeds, I found in Index “E” that one Allen Whatley of Greene Co. sold to Edw. Beard, page 112. (I do nothave a copy.)

In Hancock Co., GA. Index to Deeds, I found in Index “E” that one Eli Whaley of Hancock Co. GA sold to Elisha Hearn 40 acres for$60.00 on 25 February 1800. At that time Eli Whaley made his mark. It may have been land of William Whaley, Sr. as yet unproven.

There are numerous other Deeds which point to the fact that the Whaley and Ewing families are near to each other early in the 1800's.I had no time to search all these through. I spent several days in an effort to prove my theory.

When Hannah Ewens (sic) (Ewing) sold Walton Co. land April 27, 1839 to John Pepper, Sr of Newton Co. (the sale was of land inWalton Co. GA) it was witnessed by Alford (sp?) Whaley. He is shown as a son of Thomas Jefferson Whaley (a son of Eli Whaley) onthe 1840 Census. She was still “of Newton Co. Ga.”

Research into the name of Pepper, Thompson (another neighbor), Kirk, White and McKnight produced no Hannah nor Ewing relatives.

Each of Hannah Ewing's children indicated, as she did, that she was “Born in Georgia.” None of them knew where their father, WilliamEwing was born. He died in 1827 when the eldest, Green Berry Ewing, was about 24 and the youngest, Hannah Ewing, Jr. was less thanone year old. Hannah was left with 10 children between the ages of a few months to twenty-four years. It is possible she lost some forthere are “gaps” in ages. She is buried at EWING'S CHAPEL near Auburn, GA. There is a marker that may be hers but it is too worn to read for proof.

Hannah Ewing (widow) of McCullers District of Newton Co., Ga. was in the Cherokee Land Lottery and drew Lot #282 in the 7 Districtth

2 section now Gilmer Co., Ga. We could never find what happened to that land. This was 1832. nd

Hannah also registered in the Gold Lottery for William Ewing's (Orphans) of McCullers District Newton Co., Ga. They drew lot #149 in 18 District, 2 section now Cobb Co. We believe it was near the town of Austell, GA. They received 40 acresth nd

of Gold land! ! ! This was 1830. It may be that Green Berry Ewing, the eldest, bought out the others. He was the only one to live inCobb. Co., Ga.

Known children of William and Hannah Ewing are:

I. Green Berry Ewing born in August of 1802 in Jackson Co. GA and believed to be the eldest child of William and Hannah Ewing.He married 31 July 1830 Rhoda Martin who had been born in 1812 in South Carolina according to the Census Records. GreenBerry Ewing may have been born in Jackson Co., Ga. as that is where we first find William Ewing. There was another “Green Berry”(Chapman) who died in Georgia May 27, 1818. His son, Robert E. Chapman had “Eliza Chapman” who married Jones HendersonEwing, my great grandfather. We have wondered about it ... unproven.

On the 1830 Census of Newton Co. Ga., taken one month after Green Berry Ewing and Rhoda married, he is listed as “head of thehousehold” (he was the eldest son) and was living next door to William McCullers who had sold William Ewing land in 1823. In thehousehold were:

1 male age 5-10 (Charles Ewing born 1824) 2 males ages 10-15 (Jones Henderson, mine, born 1821 and Isaac born 1816)1 male age 15-20 (possibly Joseph born about 1811. William, Jr. may have been “put to trades”) 1 male age 20-30 is Green Berry himself 1 female 15-20 may be Nancy Ewing 1 female 20-30 is, probably Rhoda Martin Ewing, his bride 1 female 40-50 is the mother, Hannah

On the 1832 Gold Lottery, he was listed as a “resident of Newton Co., Ga. in McCullers District.” He drew Lot 441, 40 acres in 16th

District, 2 section, now Cobb County. We think he went there to live. nd

On the 1840 Census Green Berry Ewing is shown in Cobb County, Georgia in District # 711 (not the district where he had won land inthe Gold Lottery.) By that time he and Rhoda had:

1 male under 5 years, 2 males age 5-10, 1 male age 10-15,1 male age 30-40, This is Green Berry now 38 years old.1 female under 5 years,1 female age 5-10,1 female age 20-30. This is Rhoda Martin Ewing his wife now 28 yrs.

On the 1850 Census Green Berry Ewing is shown in Paulding County, Georgia in District # 848. It names his wife, Rhoda, and hischildren as this is the first Census naming other members of the family but not their relationship. It says he was “born in GA”.

We were unable to trace him any further as the Paulding County, GA Records were burned in a courthouse fire, we were told, as wereCobb County.

II. Thomas Ewing born 25 December 1807 Jackson Co. GA. Believed to be the second child of William and Hannah Ewing.

This family is in Gwinnett County Families 1818-1968. It was prepared by Thomas Harvis Ewing of Smyrna, Ga. and Warner Robbins,GA. Not all of the findings of Thomas Harvis Ewing are repeated concerning families other than EWING.

Thomas Ewing was born on 25 Dec 1808 [sic, see above] in, probably, Jackson County, Georgia the year after William Ewing boughtthe Marbury/Marburg Creek land from Joseph Camp. He died 11 Nov 1892 in Oklahoma, we believe. In 1881 and 1882, he sold hisGwinnett County lands to his youngest son, Charles Dilmus Ewing, who moved to Lexington, Okla. Thomas Ewing married the“Preacher's Daughter”, Elizabeth Patillo daughter of Rev. Samuel Patillo born 25 Jan 1771 in Charlotte Co., VA. Rev. Patillo was theson of George and Martha (Varner) Patillo. Rev. Patillo was one of the Administrators of the estate of William Ewing, father of Thomas,in 1827. Elizabeth Patillo was born 25 May 1808 in Walton Co., GA and died 24 Sept 1895 in Tribbey, OK. They had married on 8th

September 1829, in Walton Co. GA.

Thomas Ewing was on the Census of Georgia in 1830 and had no children at that time. We believe they helped to raise Hannah Ewingthe youngest child of Hannah and William Ewing having been born in late 1826 or early 1827. They lived next door to his brother,Thompson Ewing, “III” below.

By 1840 Thomas and Elizabeth had moved to Gwinnett Co. Ga. and appeared in every Census after that through 1880. In the 1832 GoldLottery, he drew Lot 468, 21 District, 3 Section, now Polk Co. GA ... 40 Acres, and was listed as a resident of Newton Co. Ga. inst rd

McCullers District.

In 1850 they are in Gwinnett Co. Ga. next door to Richard Asbury Whitworth and his wife, Sarah Evelyn Moore. The Whitworth's hada daughter, Antoinette Virginia born January of that year. (My grandmother.)

Thomas Ewing became known as “Uncle Tommie” I am told and they were much beloved. He removed his “letter” in 1887 from theAlcove Baptist Church. He had lived in Harbin's District then in Sugar Hill District near the Rest Haven Community.

Thomas Ewing and Elizabeth (Patillo) Ewing had:

A. Martha J. Ewing b 1831. No more known

B. W. Frances Ewing b 1833.

C. Julian Ewing b 1835. He was called “Julius” so a member of the family indicated. In 1937 he was 107 years old and was livingin Texas. He may have moved there with brother, Thomas Wesley Ewing, “I” below who died in California. Brother, CharlesDilmus Ewing also moved to Texas and Oklahoma see “J” below.

D. Elizabeth Ewing b 1837. No more known

E. Samuel Jones Ewing born 25 May 1839, died 11 Feb 1917 in Gwinnett Co., GA. He married, 13 Aug 1865 Mary FrancesHarris born 17 March 1844, died 28 April 1935. Both are buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Snellville, GA. He joinedCompany F, 35 Georgia Infantry on 23 September 1861 one month after his cousins, Miles Elmore Ewing (MYth

GRANDFATHER) and Joseph Ewing (son of Isaac Ewing) who ran away together to “join up.” The 35 served with Gen.th

Robert E. Lee. He was taken prisoner before the surrender at Appomattox. He walked all the way back to Lawrenceville, Ga.in Gwinnett County just as many, including my grandfather, did. He died in the home of his son, John Tyler Ewing “2” belowin 1917. III. Thompson Ewing born 1810 in Gwinnett/Jackson County, Georgia believed Third child of William and Hannah Ewing.

Thompson Ewing, like several of his brothers and sisters was probably named for a “good neighbor” of William and Hannah Ewing.William had lived next to the Thompson family for several years. Thompson Ewing was born in 1810 according to the Census Recordsof 1830, 1840 and 1850. He married in Newton Co. (Marriages) Mary Whitten who was “born in South Carolina in 1810" accordingto Census. Thompson was probably born in Gwinnett Co., Ga. and was about 13 when the family moved to Newton Co., Ga. He remainedthere the remainder of his life. In 1832 Gold Lottery Thompson Ewing drew Lot #719, 12th District, 1 Section, now in Lumpkin Co.,st

Ga. “40 acres of Gold.” He was listed as a resident of Newton Co., Ga. in McCullers District. We could not locate what disposition wasmade of that 40 acres. Newton Co. Book D page 678, Thompson sold 14 Mar 1834 south half lot #305 9 District Henry Co. now Newtonth

to Cary Wood.

Thompson Ewing and Mary Whitten Ewing had: A. Nancy Malinda Ewing born 1831 married (Newton Co. Ga. Marriages) 27 February 1851 Miles Elmore Chapman. Surely

this is the man after whom my grandfather, Miles Elmore Ewing, was named. Miles Elmore Chapman was, according to Census,“born in S.C. 1818, 1824 or 1826.” On the 1860 Census they are living in Oxford, Ga. in the section near to Elizabeth Ewingand John O. Yarborough (see below).

Miles Elmore Chapman was, in all probability, a brother to Elizabeth Chapman who married Jones Henderson Ewing my greatgrandparents. The estate settlement of Robert Chapman, deceased, in 1849 Newton Co. Ga. includes Miles Elmore Chapman and JonesH. Ewing who was “made guardian of his children, Miles Elmore Ewing, Elizabeth Ewing and Mary Frances Ewing. [Minutes of Courtof Ordinances, Newton Co. GA. 1849 page 199]. Nancy Malinda and Miles Elmore Chapman had:

E. Elizabeth Ewing born 1840 married 6 Sept 1857 John O. Yarborough (In Newton Co. Ga Marriages). On 1860 Census hewas listed as a “miller”. Later, a John O. Yarborough was listed as the Minister of Covington Methodist Church. We have notyet proven they were one and the same but think they are. We know of only 1 child:

I believe this man to be another son because of his constant nearness, in the Census Records, to Joseph Ewing. On the 1820 Census therewas, in the home of William and Hannah Ewing, 4 sons under 10 years. Jones Henderson, born 1821 and Charles, born 1824 were, ofcourse, not on that Census. As Isaac was born in 1816 he was 4 years old that year, and Thompson was born 1809/10, was 9 or 10 thatyear. William, (Jr.) in later Census Records was “born in 1811” so he was 9 years old in 1820, and Joseph Ewing born 1812 was 8 yearsold. These, then, were the 4 “under 10”. The “1 male 10-16” was Thomas Ewing born 1808 and was “12”. The “1 male 16-26” was Green Berry Ewing born 1802 and was “18”. On the 1830 Census Record in Newton Co. Ga. home of Green Berry Ewing, now just married, is only 1 male under 10. This has toCharles “6”. Jones Henderson born 1821, and Isaac born 1816 are “2 males 10-15”. William or Joseph could be the male age 15-20 forCensus indicates William (Jr.) born 1811/12 and Joseph born about 1812/13. Possibly one was “put to trades”.

On the 1840 Census, Fayette Co. Ga. there is William Ewing, with 1 male “10-15” one male “20-30" (himself?) and 1 female “20-30"who must be his wife. The male must be one of the younger brothers for William probably did not have a son that old as he was possiblyonly 28 or 29 that year. His brother, Charles, would have been about 15 that year.

On the 1840 Census, Fayette Co. Ga. there is next door to William Ewing “Joseph Ewing with 1 male under 5; 2 males 20-30 (himselfand a younger brother) 3 females under 5; 2 females 15-20". On the 1850 Census, DeKalb Co. Ga. we find Joseph Ewing in “Stones District” (see Joseph ahead), but we do not find William (Jr)Ewing. All of the sons of William and Hannah Ewing are now on the Census Records. The names of Joseph Ewing's children and wifeare listed along with their ages. They match, with little variance, the 1860 Census.

On the 1860 Census of Fayette Co., Ga. William Ewing and Joseph Ewing are, again, shown next door to each other in the FayettevilleDistrict. William is shown as being “age 49, born in Georgia, a farmer, worth $2,000 to $4,000. In household are wife, M. Ewing age49 born in S.C., (S. or H.) Adams age 14, male, born in GA; E. Heaton age 11, female, born in GA; and A. Simpson age 23, male, born in GA. This MAY BE Alfred Simpson son of William's sister,Nancy Ewing Simpson and Elijah Simpson, see ahead.

This is all we have located, so far, on William Ewing [Jr] thought to be the 4 living child of William, died 1827 and Hannah.th

V. Joseph Ewing born 1812 in Gwinnett Co., Ga. Believed to be the 5 child of William and Hannah Ewing.th

As I stated in this chapter re William Ewing (Jr?) the above Joseph Ewing was, most probably, one of the four unnamed children ofWilliam and Hannah Ewing on the 1820 Census in Gwinnett Co., GA who was “under 10 years of age” that year. We have successfullyfigured out the others. The fact that these two remain near each other further confirms our belief. We must add that we located anddismissed all other possibilities having identified three early Ewing families from S.C. in that area.

On the 1840 Georgia Census we find Joseph Ewing with 1 male under 5 years; 2 males 20-30 [one is himself and the other surely oneof the unmarried brothers], 3 females under 5 and 2 females age 15-20. He is in Fayette Co. Ga. As stated, William Ewing's informationfollows his.

On the 1850 Georgia Census we find Joseph Ewing in DeKalb Co. GA, Green Berry Ewing has moved to Paulding Co. Ga. This is thefirst Census telling ages, giving names of wife and children and places of birth. He is in Stone's District Division #121.

On the 1860 Georgia Census we find Joseph Ewing in Fayette Co. GA. [again, next to William as he was on the 1840]. The Census takergave only initials. He is in Census Div 777-Fayetteville, GA:

As was stated previously we cannot prove, without doubt that Joseph Ewing was a son of William and Hannah Ewing. A look at thosenames surely points in that direction. If Joseph is the son he named his first daughter, Nancy after his sister; he named William for hisfather; he named Hannah for his mother and sister; and probably “J.H.” might be Jones Henderson Ewing named for his brother, my greatgrandfather.

On the 1820 Census Isaac Ewing was, surely, one of the 4 males listed as being “under 10 years of age”. His existence is implied in the1830 Census of Newton Co. Ga. with Green Berry Ewing his eldest brother. He would have been the “1 male under 16”.

By 1840 Census, he is listed as being in Census Division 463 of McCullers District of Newton Co. Ga. There are in his household1 male under 5 1 male 20-30 (himself; so born between 1810 and 1820) 1 female under 5 1 female age 20-30 (wife; also born between 1810 and 1820)

On the 1850 Census Isaac Ewing was in the 65 Census District of Newton Co. Ga. We were unable to find any of his land purchasesth

in Newton Co. Ga. They may have been, at the time, in Henry Co. Ga. He was next door to Jones Henderson Ewing, my greatgrandfather, his brother. Jones Henderson Ewing was #53 on the 1850 Census; Isaac Ewing was #54 and Hannah Ewing was #55 (livingalone!) The family of Isaac Ewing in 1850 reads:

On the 1860 Census Isaac Ewing was in the Chinquapin Grove Division and 478 Division of Gwinnett Co., GA. He lived near ThomasEwing, Jones Henderson Ewing, Charles Ewing all three his brothers we believe. The family of Isaac Ewing reads:

The son above “Billy” or William would be 22 is not on this Census. The daughter above, Mary would be 20 and is not on this Census.

On the 1870 Census Isaac Ewing continues in Gwinnett Co., Ga. He continues to be near Jones H., Charles, Joseph, Thomas and, nowEli his son born 1848 who is already married at 23. His wife is Phebra also 23. Eli and Phebra have their first child Henry Ewing listedas being 4/12 of age. His brother, Joseph, who ran away with Miles Ewing is near him on the Census and near Miles.

The 1870 Census family of Isaac Ewing reads:

Isaac Ewing age 50 (he is really 54 years old) (no wife is listed. Lydia has died) Eliza, age 20 (b1850) Was Elizabeth in 1860 Elizabeth age 18 (born 1851 is probably the “Betsy” of 1860 Rebecca age 13 ( born 1857 but given as “8” on 1860 b 1852) Nancy is 15 (born 1855. Age is “6” on 1860 b 1854) Willa (female) is 12 so b 1858 (1860 indicates 1857) “Nuley”is 10 so b 1860 is the same as George, who was 1 in 1860 M.E. is “8” and was in the home of Eli in 1880 age 17.

With the help of tax records, later Gwinnett and Newton Co. Ga. Marriage Records and family records we have many members of thefamily of Isaac Ewing and Lydia Hughes born S.C.

VI. Isaac Ewing born 1816 in Gwinnett Co., Ga. married 4 Oct 1837 in Newton Co. Marriages, Lidia or Lydia Hughes born 1824 inS.C. He is on the 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 Census but not 1880. They had:

E. Jonathan Ewing (also shown as John and Jothn) born 1845. He went to Oklahoma in 1908 and died there 21 Oct 1921. Wedo not have more on his family.

F. Eli Ewing born 2 August 1848 died 13 Feb 1907 married about 1869 in Gwinnett Co. Phoebe Towler born 23 Dec 1845. Theyare next to his brother, Joseph and uncle, Jones H. in Harbin's District of Gwinnett Co. Ga. in 1870. I believe Eli was namedfor the uncle of Isaac Ewing, Eli Whaley. On the 1880 Census Eli Ewing is back in Walton Co. Ga. His age is “33” and hiswife is shown as “Frances” age 32. His children are “H.F.” age 10; J.P. age 6; and W.P.L age 1; “sister” M.E. age 18.

On the 1820 Census of William Ewing in Gwinnett Co. Ga. there was a female under 10 years in the household. She could, possibly, bethe female age 10-16 in the household for we have never found who that might have been. However, searching all counties in the areawhere William and Hannah Ewing lived we found only one, Nancy Ewing who might belong. In Newton Co. Ga. where seven by the last name EWING were married within an eighteen year period one of them was Nancy Ewingwho married on 10 of November 1833 one Elijah Simpson. Surely this is the daughter of William. th

In the 1850 Census of Dekalb Co. Atlanta, Ga. they are living near Joseph Ewing, possibly her brother. She is shown as being age 33 soborn 1817. She, then, would have been the female under 10 years in 1820. If so, she was 15 when she married Elijah Simpson who wasonly 17 when they married. In 1850, he was “34” and was called a “waggoner”. Perhaps they traveled around a lot, or maybe his business made them move.

The 1860 and 1870 Census records of this part of Atlanta, GA, DeKalb County, were not microfilmed. I was most frustrated. There isno record of them on the 1880 Soundex film. I did not search for them on the 1832 Cherokee Gold Lottery nor in Land Deeds in everyCounty. I found none in Newton Co. Ga where they were married. I do wish we knew more of Nancy Ewing and Elijah Simpson.

VII. Nancy Ewing born 1817 in GA. married 10 November 1833 Elijah Simpson born 1815 “in South Carolina” according to the1850 DeKalb Co. Ga. Census. They may have moved to Paulding Co. where Green Berry Ewing, her brother, lived and whereher younger sister, Hannah Ewing and husband John Moore, had moved to by 1860. According to the 1850 Census they had:

A. William Simpson “age 17” born 1833 B. Allen J. Simpson “age 16” born 1834 C. Elijah F. Simpson “age 8” born 1842 D. Frances M. Simpson “age 3” born 1847 E. Sarah A. Simpson was “6 mos” born 1850

We hope, someday, to find more of this family.

VIII. Jones Henderson Ewing born 14 Jan 1821 in Walton Co. GA is the 8 child of William and Hannah Ewing.th

What we have learned about this man, my great-grandfather, would fill another book. He was, I believe, a most outstanding man as werehis brothers and sisters. He was born as stated above (in the Ewing Family Bible) on 14 Jan 1821, Jackson Co. Ga had part cut to becomeWalton Co., GA by Dec 1818. At the same time Gwinnett Co., Ga was created, on Dec 15, 1818. Newton Co., Ga. was not created until24 Dec 1821, the end of the year in which Jones Henderson Ewing was born. His father did not buy the Newton Co., Ga. land until 1823.

Jones Henderson Ewing is shown in “Newton Co. Ga. Marriages” as having married Eliza (Elizabeth) Chapman, daughter of RobertC. Chapman of Newton Co. Ga. on 29 January 1841.

On the 1850 Census, we find him in the 65 Census Division of Newton Co. Ga. #53 next to Isaac Ewing, #54 surely his brother, whoth

is next door to Hannah Ewing (alone) #55. Jones Henderson Ewing is 29 years old with “Miles E. age 6” (my grandfather); “Elizabethage 5” and “Mary F. age 3”. A Charles Harris age 13 is living in the home. Eliza. Chapman Ewing had died prior to the 1850 Census.We found that in 1849 Jones Henderson Ewing was made “guardian of Miles, Elizabeth and Mary Frances Ewing. That is the year thatRobert C. Chapman, father of Elizabeth Chapman Ewing, died in Newton Co., GA. Robert C. Chapman was a son, we believe, ofDewberry and Jane Wilkinson (of S.C.) Chapman who lived in Wilkes Co., GA. There was one Miles Elmore Chapman who marrieda daughter of Thompson Ewing, Malinda Ewing, on 27 Feb 1851. Surely Miles Elmore Ewing was named for this man. We believe hemay have been a brother to Elizabeth Chapman. He was at the Administration of the estate of Dewberry Chapman prior to 1818 as wasRobert C. Chapman. We have not “put together, satisfactorily” the Chapman family. But names played an important part in those earlydays.

Deeds in Newton Co., Ga. are, sometimes, rather sketchy and not all dates are clearly recorded but we found with help from ThomasHarvis Ewing some of those Deeds of Jones Henderson Ewing. There are others by Thomas Ewing, Thompson Ewing, Green Berry Ewingand Isaac Ewing. They were really land-hungry men.

Newton Co. Ga.”

• 1850, Newton Co. Deed Book I page 514: “Jones Ewing purchased from the estate of Robert Chapman, Charles S. Dorsett, Administrator, Lot 303, 9 District formerlyth

Henry now Newton Co. Ga Except, Georgia Railroad 18 acres 4 acres graveyard, 5 acres house of John D. Williams and 125½ acres excluding above.”

Jones Henderson Ewing was involved with Newton Co., Ga. Deeds in 1845, 1846, 1849, 1850 and 1856. The film was so dim it was hard to verify a specific date to each one of the Deeds.

As mentioned numerous times these men were closely knit and bought lands near each other. Thomas Ewing bought/sold part Lot #306;Thompson Ewing bought and sold south half of Lot #305. Green Berry Ewing bought land as early as 1828, ¼ of Lot 306.

• 1852 Newton Co. Deed Book K page 415 but dated 1852? “Jones H. Ewing sold land to Charles S. Dorsett and to Leonard Fretwell in 1853. Book K page 445, 1853 is recording date.

Isaac Ewing bought land from John Harris as late as 1850 as Recorded in Deed Book M. p 278 the “East Quarter of Lot 305 in 9thDistrict.” THERE ARE OTHERS!

In Roster of Confederate Soldiers we found: “Jones H. Ewing, Private, enlisted Feb 10, 1864 at Bethany, GA Listed as ‘Regimental Return’. A.W.O.L since Feb 10, 1864. So he was not truly A.W.O.L. He had moved to Gwinnett Co. by 1860 Census-taking time. He had married again and had three additionalchildren the eldest being eight years younger than the youngest by Elizabeth Chapman. She was Mary (Feaster) Smith, a widow. I havenever verified whether or not those children were hers as Mrs. Smith but they carried the Ewing name. So we, all, have assumed theywere children of Jones H. Ewing. There are so very many stories that could be told but this BOOK is much too long, already. All these men were patriotic, family-lovinggentlemen. Their wives were ladies of intelligence and good breeding. Hannah Ewing must have been a wonderful woman for she madesure that William's land, after he died in 1827, was evenly divided among the sons who remained in Newton Co., Ga. They, all, wereworth considerable sums during their prime. They all stayed near her and she died in the home of Jones Henderson Ewing after 1860.We believe she is buried at Ewing's Chapel, near Auburn, Georgia. VIII. So, they lost 10 children between July 1900 and April 1910! She may have had 3 sets of twins. There was not enoughtime for her to have had that many single births. Her grandfather Whitworth was one of three sets of Whitworth twins. In 1981, I hadonly nine names of children. Miles Orville Ewing married 2 in 1911 Emma Donna (Jackson) Drennon in Birmingham, AL. Miles suffered fromnd

a drug problem resulting from drugs that he was taking for arthritis pain. It was necessary for Emma and her two childrento move in with her parents. Miles was unable to hold a job, but was an intelligent and capable person. He had been putout on the street by a landlady, when he was near death and a kindly lady took him in. They had:

The family in Lawrenceville were out of contact with Miles Orville after he left home. They didn’t know until they came to claim hisbody in Columbus that he had remarried and had a child. Miles is buried in the family cemetery in Lawrenceville. Some of the brothersof Miles offered to assist the wife of Miles in whatever way they could, financially or otherwise and trying to find an opportunity to meether and her son, John.

Grant marriedJane (Killian) Crew a widow, and cousin of Sarah (Moore) Whitworth mother of my grandmother, AntoinetteVirginia (Whitworth) Ewing wife of Miles Elmore Ewing, parents of Lucius Grant.

Col. Grant joined Central Presbyterian Church in 1859 his wife Jane K. joined in 1858 one of the Charter Members of Centralpresbyterian Church. She was my great great aunt!

In 1893 John C. Miller joined Central Presbyterian; he was the great grandfather of William Miller Fife, my husband. John C. Millerwas born in Gourock, Scotland in 1840 and died in Atlanta, GA 1896 and is buried in Westview Cemetery. His wife, Margaret(Nicholson) Miller was born in Greenock, Scotland 1820 and died in Atlanta, Ga. in 1884. She was the first woman to be buried atWestview Cemetery! They were married in Greenock, Scotland. Their son, James Miller, father of Eva (Miller) Fife, mother of myhusband, was born in London, Ontario, Canada in 1855, died in Atlanta, GA 1912 and is buried in Westview Cemetery. Eva (Miller)Fife and her husband, Hershel Alexander Fife became members of Central Presbyterian Church; Eva Miller in 1901 and Hershel A. Fifein 1908. They sang in the choir of Central and married there that year. Bill, Jr and Dan N. Fife are 5 generation members of Centralth

Presbyterian Church.

15. Pauline Ewing was the 15 child of Miles E. and “Nettie” Ewing. She was b 13 Dec 1887 and died 15 Apr 1946. Sheth

married 1 J.M. Dowda and married 2 28 Feb 1931 Joseph L. Hunt. No children. st nd

16. Everett Jamison Ewing was b 3 July 1890 and married 12 Nov 1927 Avis _____. We have been unable to find deathdate. He and Avis lived in Chicago and were in the furniture business. They moved to California where he died.

17. Antoinette Ewing (last child of Miles and “Nettie”) was known as May, was born 15 May 1892 and married 17 May 1948Joseph L. Hunt, widower of her sister Pauline. No children.

VIII. (cont.) Jones Henderson Ewing and Elizabeth Chapman Ewing: B. Elizabeth Ewing b 1845 in Newton Co. Ga. married 11 Sept Isaac N.J. “Newt” Bramblett. She was called “Aunt Lizzie”

by my daddy. We have not located their children. C. Mary Frances Ewing b1847 in Newton Co. Ga. married 11 Sept 1864 (Charles?) Harris. He lived in the home of Jones H.

Ewing on the 1850 Census. The Harris family moved to Gwinnett Co. Ga about the same time that J.H. Ewing moved there.She was called “Aunt Fannie” by my daddy. They had:

Jones Henderson Ewing married 2 Mary (Feaster) Smith a widow. nd

The Census said they had eight children. We found only seven, D through J below. Mary Feaster was born 6 March 1833 died 24 Aug1913 in Kirkwood Subdivision of Atlanta, GA. at the home of her daughter, Ella Ewing Buchanan (a milliner). She is buried at Ewing'sChapel in Harbin's District of Gwinnett Co. Ga. near Auburn. They had: (all half-brothers and -sisters to Miles, Elizabeth and Mary F.

D. Nancy Ewing b 1855 in Gwinnett Co. Ga. married John Ivey Franklin Buchanan. They had: 1. Oscar Buchanan

E. James I (Isaac) Ewing born 19 Oct 1857 died 2 Nov 1876. This was 12 days before his father died. Both are buried, alongwith Mary F. Ewing, at Ewing's Chapel, where, I am sure, Hannah Ewing is buried. The story goes, Jones Hendersonentertained a large of Church Visitors and James I. had to sleep in the barn. A storm came, he was soaked thru and developedpneumonia. Jones H. grieved so over this, prostrated himself over the grave, repeatedly, in the stormy weather. Twelve dayslater he was buried near his most beloved son, age 19. He, too, died of Pneumonia.

F. Jones H. Ewing (II or Jr never indicated) born 1860 married Syntha Jane Brand on 15 Jan 1880. She died 1913 the sameyear Jones' mother died. It is said he was called “Newt”. He was, at one time, pastor of the Woodward Ave. Baptist Church.They had:

H. Charles Polk Ewing b 8 Sept 1865 d 1932 married about 1866 Martha J. Cheek b10 Aug 1864 d l June 1947. Also “Rev.Ewing”. Had:

before reaching 100.

Charles Polk Ewing was a minister-serving at “EWING'S CHAPEL” where his father and mother and some siblings are [buried].

IX. Charles Ewing born 12 August 1824 in Newton Co. Georgia The Ninth child who lived to adulthood of William and Hannah Ewing

Charles Ewing was born in Newton Co. GA on his father's new farm in McCuller's District on the 12th of August 1824. Charles marriedJulia L. St. John on 20 of September 1848 according to “Newton County Ga. Marriages”. He died on 13 March 1887 and is buried inthe Ebenezer Churchyard in Gwinnett Co. GA. Julia St. John was born in Nov 1827 and died 12 March 1868. She is buried besideCharles. On the 1850 Census Charles and Julia St. John Ewing are living in Newton Co. Ga in the “65 Census District”. They had no childrenth

at that time. He lived next to “Hannah Ewing head of household” who lived next to Isaac Ewing who is next to Jones Henderson Ewing. On the 1860 Census Charles Ewing and wife Julia are living in Gwinnett Co. GA in the Chinquapin Grove Census District. He is nearJones Henderson Ewing and Isaac Ewing as well as Thomas Ewing. He now has three daughters. They are named for the sisters of JillSt. John Ewing. Nancy is “7”; Melia (Permelia) is “4”; and Celia is “11/12” not quite a year old.

On the 1880 Census Charles Ewing and Julia Ewing are living next door to Mary F. Ewing, widow of Jones Henderson Ewing. An auntof Jill St. John was living with them. Jill St. John Ewing had died in March of 1868 and Charles had remarried. He married 2 Nancynd

W. Pierce who was born 22 Oct 1824 and died 1 Feb 1910. Charles did not have any children by Nancy W. Pierce Ewing.

Charles Ewing and Jill St. John Ewing had :

A. Nancy Ewing b 1853 unmarried, buried Ebenezer Churchyard, Lawrenceville, GA. B. Permelia Ewing b 1856. We could not find who she married nor when and where she died C. Celia Ewing b1859. It is believed she married W.T. Wood but this is unproven.

We regret we have been unable to find more on this family.

X. Hannah Ewing born about 1826 in Newton Co. Georgia. The Tenth and last child who lived to adulthood of William & Hannah.

Hannah Ewing was born, probably, in late 1825 about 1 ½ years before her father died. Information on her is quite sketchy. She livedin the same area as the others but, of course, women are harder to trace than men. We had mentioned earlier that she was, probably, taken care of by brother, Thomas and his wife Elizabeth Patillo Ewing, just afterWilliam Ewing died and left Hannah, Sr. with all those small children.

She, like some of the others of that day, married early for we find in Newton Co. Marriages “Miss Hannah Ewing married on 17 Nov 1839John Moore.” She would have been only 14 years old. The Census Records do not prove this but give us a “hint” as to the ages of Hannah and John Moore.

• On the 1840 Census of Newton Co. Ga. we found John Moore in the 464 District with 1 male 20-30; 1 female under 5; 1 female10-15: (This has to be Hannah, Jr. as the 464 District is next to that of McCullers 463).

• On the 1850 Census of Georgia we found no John Moore that had a wife, Hannah.

• On the 1860 Census we found J. Moore age 36 (so born 1824); Hannah age 32 (this means she was born 1828. Did she rememberwhen she was born?) They are living in Paulding Co., Ga. near Green Berry Ewing. Their children were given as: Robert “17” soborn 1843; Jane “16” so born 1844; Frances “12” so born 1848; Jackson “11” so born 1849; Sarah “9” so born 1951; John, Jr. “8”so born 1852; Owin or Ewin(g) “5”; so born 1855. She had 7 children in 12 years!

• We found an 1880 Census in Paulding Co. Ga. (but no 1870) J.D. Moore was age 52 (if so born 1828. Were they sure of ages?)S.H. Moore female was 51 (if so born 1829). Sarah Hannah would have been a possible name for her. William's mother was Sarahin Cumberland Co., PA.

Children were:

M.E. Moore, a Daughter age 25, if so born 1855 (Is she the Ewin?) W.S. Moore, a son age 21, if so born 1859 E.C. Moore, a daughter age 17, if so born 1863 M.A. Moore, a daughter age 15, if so born 1865 J.Z. Moore, a son age 13, if so born 1867 O.C. Moore, a son age 11, if so born 1869 P.G. Moore, a son age 9, if so born 1871

If these are the children of Hannah Ewing and John Moore they were all born before Hannah reached 41-43 years of age. This is a logicalassumption and that she had 13 or 14 children is also logical. Though we spent many hours searching for this couple and their children in all the counties of Georgia we were not satisfied with whatwe were able to determine. We hope someone knows who they are/were. It has been said they were grandparents of Grace Moore thevery popular singer of the '30's in America. We have no proof. Nor can we trace John Moore to Sara Evelyn Moore Whitworth my greatgrandmother.
