Elements of Fiction

Characters•Protagonist – the main character; the “good guy.” This character undergoes substantial growth in a story.

•Antagonist – the character who is against the protagonist; the villain or the “bad guy.”

•Static Characters – minor or supporting characters; they don’t undergo substantial growth in the story. There is no inner personality change to them.

For example, in Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone…

•Protagonist = Harry Potter

•Antagonist = Lord Voldemort

•Static Characters = The Dursleys, Ron, Hermione, Malfoy, Hagred, and several others.

Setting•The time in which the story takes place.

• The area in which the story takes place.

•Imagery, or vivid language can be used to describe the setting of a story.

• Sometimes; however, details about the setting are often left out, so that they reader can use his or her imagination while reading.

•Takes place in modern time in Surrey, England and the Hogwarts Wizardry Academy.

•The narrator describes Hogwarts with words such as “

Exposition•This is the introduction of the story.

•It includes any background knowledge needed in order to understand the events of the story (setting, characters, etc.).

•This is where the inciting incident (initial event that triggers the rest of the story) occurs.

•For example, in Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone…

•We are introduced to Harry and are told why he is forced to live with his aunt and uncle, who are very cruel to him.

Rising Action•This is what occurs leading up to the climax.

• It is usually filled with angst and the introduction of unanswered questions that will most likely be resolved by the story’s end.

•In Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone…

•The rising action includes all of the events that occur after Harry arrives at Hogwarts.•Harry’s experience with the Quidditch team, everything he learns about the stone, and his journey through the obstacles to get to the stone.

Climax•The “high point” of the story.

•Considered the most exciting part of the story.

•It is usually the moment of greatest danger or effective decision making for the protagonist.

•In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone…

•The climax is when Harry comes face to face with Voldemort and must keep him from obtaining the stone.

Falling Action

•The events that occur directly after the climax.

•These events usually occur as direct effects of the climax of the story.

•The falling action is when Harry passes out and wakes up at Hogwarts to Dumbledore.

Resolution•The end of the falling action and the conclusion to the story.

•The final outcome of the story.

•Not all stories contain a resolution. Some leave unanswered questions to be interpreted by the reader as an independent.

•Voldemort no longer has a body to inhabit, therfore he is powerless and it is believed that he is no longer a threat to the wizard world.
