Welcome to the second edition of Chard's property and lifestyle magazine. Due to the success of our inaugural edition, a second was inevitable. This edition provides a list of alternative sports to the Olympics, and the best places to relax and enjoy a drink or two whilst toasting the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The property section offers a large selection of Chard's finest available properties and the area guides will help you decide where to go for a Spring brunch or a Summer’s day tipple. Local residents have, once again, helped us out by giving us their perspective of what it's like to live in the area. There is something in here for everyone, hope you enjoy the read.

NottingHill
Farrow & Ball
The cosmopolitan district of Notting Hill in the Royal Borough of Kensington and
Chelsea is famous for many things notably the annual carnival and the film of the same name starring Julia Roberts. It has in recent years grown to be a fashionable area for young people and has a vibrant nightlife with some of the best music bars in London. It quite uniquely possesses a bohemian spirit within a formal and affluent setting. Its close location to the famous Portobello Road Market makes it a highly desirable place to visit for shopping as small shops and stalls selling jewellery, antiques, clothing, art and souvenirs of London line the area.

OLYMPICALTERNATIVES
This year we celebrate the best of athletic performance when the Olympic Games arrive, but you don’t need to break records to enjoy sport with
Chard’s guide to some fun alternatives.
POWER kITINGWhether you’re sitting in a buggy or balancing on skates, try this thrilling alternative to a simple park pastime. Based inside Richmond Park, kitevibe introduces people to the excitement of power kiting. The vast expanse of grass at this location allows flyers to get the most out of their session as they are pulled along on wheels or specially designed land boards. By watching the exquisitely designed kites dip and glide overhead, this is as much a spectator sport as an adrenaline activity.
www.kitevibe.com
OCTOPUSHThe energetic game of octopush takes places at the bottom of a swimming pool and involves great skill, timing and teamwork. It’s an unusual cross between ice-hockey and water polo. Players kitted out with snorkels, fins and sticks must move the puck into the net to win a point – constant substitutions of a ten strong team ensures the pace moves surprisingly quickly. The need to resurface for air after every tackle means only the strongest swimmers should attempt a game, however beginners classes are available with the British Octopush Association.

ROLLERdERBYHailed as the antithesis to the treadmill, the rollerderby has rapidly grown in popularity to become a well-loved event both for amateurs and professional clubs. Feisty characters, fierce moves and the risk of some severe bruising are all part of the appeal as teams of rollerskating femme fatales battle on the track in funky apparel. The rules state no deliberate bodily harm – yet shunts, scrapes and skinned knees are inevitable. Get swept up in the energy of the crowd and cheer loudly from the stands.
www.londonrollergirls.com
SUMO RUN One of the most unique and fun ways to raise money has to be the annual Sumo Run at Battersea Park. Hundreds of participants don
inflatable sumo suits and jog three miles in aid of Gemin-I. The charity aims to empower communities in developing countries through ICT
and communication technology. The combination of a good cause and the added comedy value ensure this is a great way of entering into
sports from either the starting block or the sidelines.
www.sumorun.com
BARGE dRIVINGRowed over a course of seven miles, the Barge Driving Match is an entertaining spectator race crossing between the Palaces of Greenwich and Westminster. The event showcases the skills of watermen as they navigate up to 30 tonnes using only oars to collect flags from moored barges. Crowds line the route but you can also enjoy the race from a Thames pleasure craft that runs alongside the finishing line. This way you can participate without breaking a sweat. The event takes place in June and is organised by the London Port Authority.

South Kensington’s community is a mix of families and young professionals with a variety of
nationalities including Italians and Americans. The Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle provides language and
cultural classes, which supports the largest French community outside of France. Many of London’s famed institutions fall under South Kensington’s Exhibition Road, thus establishing
this neighbourhood as one of the most historic and visited in the entire city. The Royal Albert Hall, Natural History Museum, the V&A and the Royal College of Art are just some of the points of interest, whilst famous literary names including Beatrix Potter, Virginia Woolf and Sir J.M Barrie once called this place home.

Casa Malevo
Bayswater borders the north of Hyde Park over Kensington Gardens and is therefore a
picturesque district and a popular spot for those touring the city. Bayswater Tube Station is the gateway for many visitors to this borough. From here a multitude of cafés, bars and restaurants can be found. This is also the most densely populated area for hotels with many of the striking stucco terraces providing tourist accommodation. A diverse community gives the place a cosmopolitan edge whilst its proximity to the Marble Arch and St Sophia’s Cathedral provides a hint of its historic past. Victorian terraces line the area with immaculate garden squares and well-kept streets making it a highly desired place to own property.

A garden can be a sanctuary for those with busy lives and a place for children to play. City dwellers are increasingly developing their own private space offering a little bit of the great outdoors on rooftops and balconies. Chard presents six great reasons to go green.
URBAN OASIS
One of the best features of a balcony or rooftop garden is that you can position plants and flowers to enhance a sense of privacy. Grow climbing plants over a canopy and before you know it you’ll have created your very own secret hideaway.
Your view is in most cases a prized commodity, so why not enhance it by focusing the design of your mini-garden around it. Where possible try wrought iron or glass instead of a solid brick wall and frame your perfect view with foliage.

2.
Spr ing/Summer 2012 CHARD 38Spr ing/Summer 2012 CHARD 39
3.In the city noise can be
a problem. Traffic, crowds and the general hubbub of everyday
life can travel upwards. Counteract this and maintain your tranquil
surroundings by introducing a small water feature to mask unwanted sound.
Wall fountains make the most space saving style and are easily assembled.
6.The biggest benefit to creating a rooftop or balcony garden is the investment in the property. It is both aesthetically appealing and good for the environment and as a highly desirable feature you are more likely to attract prospective buyers should the time come for you to sell.
4.
Put your own stamp on the place by accessorizing with pots, planters, colours and textures. Choose plants that are easily maintained and try placing rocks and natural textiles in amongst outdoor furniture to accent the look.
5. The beauty of growing plants and flowers
is the changes they will undergo each
season. Perennial plants will remain a
constant feature throughout the year, but
the floral blooms of Spring and the foliage
of Autumn offer a natural update to
your garden.
