Welcome tothe village directory
Hi everyone,
It’s July and it’s a big month for The Village Directory as we are joining the smartphone revolution. We now have our own smartphone app, making our directory of local businesses and events available wherever you go, if you have a smartphone that is! It brings together all of the advertisers and events from all six magazine areas, but if you only want to search your own area you can. If you would like to know more why not check out the full story on page 15.
You might not be able to tell it’s summer by the unpredictable weather we’ve been experiencing so to cheer you up the businesses in Charing have some special summer off ers for you, so get those scissors out and start snipping away at my centre pages, but not before you’ve read the items on the back of each page! Especially page 15 containing my contribution!
Also this month the Hop Pickers at Hothfi eld is being re-launched, as you will see from our front cover. With the addition of a brand new Kiddies play area it’s perfect for some family “chillaxing” this summer, as David Cameron would say. Actually, in the “olden days” when my ultimate aim was to fi nd a good nightclub for each night of the week, where my friend Julie and I could

“boogie on down”, the Hop Pickers was called Kempton Manor. I bet there are a good number of you out there that will remember those days! Those nightclub days were far from “chillaxing” if my memory serves me right, and what a fantastic way to keep fi t!
Ah happy days!
Until next time, have fun!

JulyI have just returned from my hols down on the Berkshire/Hampshire borders and the garden has gone bananas. The sudden change from that awful cold spell we had and now this lovely sunshine has really brought things on, but sadly, once again, I have learnt a lesson. Don’t put in seeds that require warmth to germinate. Prior to leaving I had sown rows of Little Gem lettuce, beetroot and
parsnips thinking there would be no problem. Three weeks later and not a seedling in sight and I know it wasn’t the dreaded pigeons as I had put the fencing over the garden for protection, obviously the cold spell took its toll. So I must now re-sow. Methinks I would have done better had I left sowing until we returned. Yet on the other hand, the radish, spring onions and leeks are doing well! I am trying a new variety of spring onion, a purple one. Spring onions have always been my Achilles heel in the garden and I temporarily gave up on growing them, but I hate being defeated, especially by a spring onion! So I am trying again. Things are looking reasonable at the moment – I shall report back.
On the runner bean front, the seeds that were planted directly into the ground are up, and the ones I planted out from pots are slowly making their way up the strings, though not a lot of growth has been made. (weather again?)
In the greenhouse things are good. The tomatoes are getting rather tall now, but no fl owers yet, (don’t forget to regularly take out the cordons), and the mini cucs are halfway up, but again no fl owers.

Now, I said I would report back on those expensive basket tomatoes. Well they are rather slow growers, and look every inch like a verbena rather than a tomato! But they are now at the stage to transplant them into their baskets so hopefully they shall take off in growth. ( And hopefully I shall end up with a basket full of toms rather than fl owers!). I am still feeding with a weak solution each time I water. I do fi nd that the plants grow more steadily and seem to produce more, and anyway I don’t have to remind myself when they need a feed!
I was really looking forward to coming back from the hols to a garden full of long wisteria tassels. On the patio where it is sheltered, the two were lovely, yet where the plants were more exposed, though the buds were there, the cold snap we had stopped the blossom from developing fully. Still some wisteria was better than none.
So now it is time to clean up the garden after my two weeks away. I don’t know about you, but waiting to remove the daff odil foliage is like watching paint dry. It’s a job I can’t wait to get done as they always look so untidy. OK, I know you’re
supposed to leave them on as long a possible to feed the bulb, but when you walk around the garden and see the lovely summer blooms struggling through the spent foliage, fi ngers start itching to grab the scissors and snip! So today that is a job I am going to tackle along with some more seedlings I have to transplant of begonia.
Before I sign off I must tell you, we visited Marlborough whilst we were away and found a lovely gift shop, the type which one just has to have a nose around. Amongst the goodies on display I came across a fab sign, which I just had to purchase for the garden. It read – Gardening requires a lot of water, mainly in the form of perspiration. How apt is that?
Break time. Oh dear - there is no cake today as I haven’t had time to make any, owing to the eight loads of washing and the Mount Everest of ironing looking at me. However, I do have some hot cross buns, which I think shall go rather splendidly toasted and buttered with a nice cup of coff ee, or maybe two? JW

Thinking of Buying a Property?
In another of our regular series on legal matters, Katrina Kemp, from Tenterden Solicitors Pengelly & Rylands, explains the process of buying a new home.
If you are thinking about buying a property you need to be fully aware of what is involved. After all, this is likely to be one of the largest investments you will ever make. Firstly, be sure you have budgeted properly. There are a variety of costs involved: Land Registry fees, Stamp Duty Land Tax, search fees, solicitor’s fees etc. At Pengelly & Rylands we provide a full break down of the costs involved, so there should be no fi nancial surprises! If you require a mortgage you should apply as soon as possible so as not to delay the purchase. Your lender will carry out a valuation of the property; this is not the same as a survey - if you want to be sure the property is structurally sound instruct a surveyor.Once your offer is accepted, you should advise the estate agents of your solicitor, and they will send your solicitor a memorandum of sale. The seller’s solicitor will then send your solicitor a draft contract of sale, title information and Property Information Forms and the investigation of title can then be carried out. Your solicitor will look at what is registered against the title at the Land Registry and various searches will reveal the property’s planning and buildings regulations history, etc. Enquiries will then be raised, based on your solicitor’s fi ndings. These will need to be answered by the sellers and their solicitor. The seller does not have to tell you about problems with the property or neighbourhood, but should reply truthfully to all enquiries raised. Your solicitor will then report to you on the fi ndings and, if you are happy to proceed, they will fi nalise the terms of the contract. You and the seller will then sign an identical contract and your solicitor will hold your signed contract until a completion date is agreed. This is when you need to provide the deposit, usually 10% of the purchase price, and this must be cleared funds in your solicitor’s account before they can exchange contracts. At exchange, the contracts become binding and the 10% deposit becomes non-refundable. If you require a mortgage, your solicitor will apply for the mortgage funds to arrive on or before the agreed completion date. Between exchange and completion you may need to sign the Land Registry transfer document. You will need to ensure that the balance of the funds is in place before completion, as you are contractually
bound to complete on the agreed date. On the completion day your solicitor will transfer the money to the seller’s solicitor, who will then complete the purchase and instruct the agents to release the keys to you. If there is a chain, it can take some time for the money to arrive and for completion to take place. After completion, your solicitor will arrange to pay any stamp duty required and register the change of ownership at the Land Registry. Buying a property can be stressful; so you should choose a solicitor who will communicate with you throughout. At Pengelly & Rylands we will guide you, personally, through every stage of the process to make it as stress free as possible. You can speak to Elizabeth Connell or Katrina Kemp on: 01580 762248.

Since 2005 The Village Directory has served the rural communities of Ashford, Tenterden and the Marsh with its monthly publication and delivery via Royal Mail. Now, for the very fi rst time, we are joining the mobile revolution and heading into the technological world of the Smartphone.
This month our brand new mobile app, for iPhone and Android smartphones, will go live and be available to any of you with a smartphone to download completely FREE!
The app will bring together all six of our magazine areas, providing local information, events, special off ers and of course a complete directory of all of our local advertisers.
You will be able to search your local area and, if you can’t fi nd what you need, look further afi eld into the areas covered by the other magazines. If you need directions, or a fast way to
contact one of our advertisers The Village Directory will always be on hand to help.
We also plan to publish events, so if you miss the magazine deadline and wish to publicise your local event we can at least make it available to all our smartphone users.
We also hope to publish special off ers and discounts being off ered by our advertisers, so please watch this space.
If you are a small business with a limited budget you might like to advertise on our app rather than in the magazine please contact me for details on01233 720488 or email me at [email protected].
It will be a while before we can judge the popularity of this new service, and there are bound to be teething problems, but hopefully it will prove to enhance the service given by The Village Directory and enable us to put one foot fi rmly into the 21st Century.

The term cloud computing is used regularly these days, but most people don’t really know what it means. As there are many potential benefi ts to using “The Cloud”, I thought it would be useful to explain what it is, and to share some of the advantages and disadvantages.
Back in 1996, a marketing executive and a technologist from Compaq came up with the concept. Their futuristic idea was that we wouldn’t buy software for our own computers, as we would buy access to the programs we need on demand over the Internet. Fast forward 16 years, and most of us are indeed using cloud technology. In fact, if you share fi les in Drop Box, use Norton Online Backup, listen to music on
Spotify, use Yahoo/Gmail for your email or make phone calls using Skype, you’re already using The Cloud! Last year Google even launched Chromebook, a laptop designed to work only using software on the Internet.
What are the advantages of Cloud Technology?Using The Cloud means that your email, fi les, pictures and music are easily accessible anywhere you go: because they are stored on the Internet, and not on your own computer. You can also have access to an enormous range of applications - anywhere, from any computer. It’s normally quick to get started, and cloud services are designed to be easy to use. They are great for small businesses too, because you can inexpensively use applications that previously only larger businesses could have aff orded to install and maintain.
Reputable cloud service providers look after their systems and make regular backups. This means that your data should be safer (from loss or corruption) than when it’s stored on a home or offi ce computer. As cloud services are provided by multiple powerful servers, you’ll fi nd that you can achieve so much more without having to upgrade your own computer system.
Are there any disadvantages to The Cloud?Cloud services may not work well if you have a slow or unreliable Internet connection. If the Internet is unavailable, you may lose all access to your programs and documents as they won’t necessarily be available offl ine. There have been some very high profi le examples of “catastrophic system failures” in the cloud. These have been with services provided by Amazon and Microsoft, so even established companies are not immune to problems. Also consider that with data stored remotely, you are in eff ect entrusting your fi les to a third party. It’s important to understand where your fi les are being stored, how they are secured and who potentially has access to them.
What exactly is “The Cloud” that people are talking about?

In Summary
Using The Cloud can save you money, by giving you access to computer power and software that would normally cost a fortune to buy and maintain in your own home or business. However, you are at the mercy of your internet connection and some caution is required while selecting services to ensure your valuable data is not put at risk.
So if you’re thinking of using cloud based applications at home or at work, and would like some impartial advice on the best way forward, call Steve at Ashford Computer Solutions on 01233 469217.

MY EX-WIFE THE PILOT My ex-wife started taking fl ying lessons about the time our divorce started and she got her license shortly before our divorce was fi nal, later that same year.
Yesterday afternoon I got a phone call, that she narrowly escaped injury in the aircraft she was piloting. Seems she was forced to make an emergency landing in Hamilton because of bad weather. Thank God the kids weren’t with her.
The FAA issued a preliminary report, citing pilot error: She was fl ying a single engine aircraft in IFR (instrument fl ight rating) conditions while only having obtained a VFR (visual fl ight rating).
The absence of a post-crash fi re was likely due to insuffi cient fuel on board. No one on the ground was injured.
The photograph below was taken at the scene to show the extent of damage to her aircraft.
She was really lucky.
A man calls home to his wife and says,Honey, I have been asked to fl y to Canada with my boss and several of his friends for fi shing. We’ll be gone for a long weekend. This is a good opportunity for me to get that promotion I’ve been wanting, so could you please pack enough clothes for a 3-day weekend? .... And, also, would you get out my rod and tackle box from the attic? We’re leaving at 4:30 pm from the offi ce and I will swing by the house to pick my things up. Oh! And please pack my new navy blue silk pyjamas.”The wife thinks this sounds a bit odd, but, being the good wife, she does exactly what her husband asks.Following the long weekend, he comes home a little tired, but, otherwise, looking good. The wife welcomes him home and asks if he caught many fi sh.He says, ‘Yes! Lots of Walleyes, some Bass, and a few Pike. He says, “But why didn’t you pack my new blue silk pyjamas like I asked you to do?”The wife replies, I did. They’re in your tackle box.
Never, Never, Never try to outsmart a woman!
Regardless of one’s age, one should always plan ahead... The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80 and then about her new husband’s occupation.
“He’s a funeral director.” she answered.
“Interesting.” the newsman thought.
He then asked her if she would mind telling him a little about her fi rst three husbands and what they did for a living.
She paused for a few moments, needing time to refl ect on all those years.
After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she’d fi rst married a banker when she was in her early 20’s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40’s, later on a preacher when in her 60’s and now in her 80’s, a funeral director.
The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished and asked why she had married four men with
such diverse careers.
She smiled and explained, “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go.”
