Charitable Donation Receipts for Auction Donors

Per CRA, gift certificates issued by donor; services; and use of vacation property do not get receipted. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/charitiesnews-24/charitiesnews-24-e.html

Donors of items with a determinable Fair Market Value will receive a charitable donation receipt for the amount of the Fair Market Value. (If an item sells for less than the Fair Market Value, the donor will still receive a receipt for the amount of the Fair Market Value.)

Fair Market Value will be assigned by the MCC Relief Sale Appraisal Committee and will be displayed publicly at the auction before an item is sold. It is ok to have donors give us an “Estimated Value” on their item Identification Slip, as long as MCC Alberta clearly states that the Relief Sale Appraisal Committee will make the final determination of Fair Market Value.

If a donated item does not have a determinable Fair Market Value, a charitable donation receipt will NOT be issued.

Charitable Donation Receipts for Auction Buyers

Buyers of auction items are eligible for a charitable donation receipt only if the following two criteria are met:

1) The item has a Fair Market Value assigned (some items may not have an assigned FairMarket Value): and

2) The price paid at auction is at least 25% higher than the Fair Market Value of the item.If the preceding two criteria are met, the buyer is entitled to a charitable donation receiptequal to the difference between the purchase price and the Fair Market Value.

E.g., For an item with a Fair Market Value of $400, any successful bid of $500 orgreater would entitle the bidder to a charitable donation receipt equal to the excess of thebid price over $400.

Functional Quilt/Charity Donations

These quilts are donated by quilting groups which do not require a gift in kind receipt. The purchaser gets a receipt for the full amount of the bid. The quilts are given by MCC to charity organizations. _____________________________________________________________________________

Each item being auctioned is on display and has a paper and/or sticker with a number on it corresponding to its place in the catalogue. The F, S, or X on it indicates whether it is to be sold at the Friday, Saturday or Feature Items auction
