What is BYOD

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a program that allows staff and students to use their personal device for CCPS sanctioned activities and to connect to the Internet for instructional activities. This pilot was implemented at selected schools during the 2013–14 school year.

Rationale

CCPS is committed to providing students and staff with a next generation learning environment in which every student has access to learning experiences and instruction designed around discovery, connectivity and experience. Furthermore, CCPS is committed to immersing our students in the creation of knowledge and empowering our students to collaborate, communicate and innovate.

Benefits of BYOD

The benefits of a BYOD Program are as follows:

• Fosters student ownership of his/her learning• Students and teachers have real time access to information using personal devices• Smooth transition between home and school• Increases student access to online instructional materials• Allows for personalized learning• Increases access by supplementing school resources and equipment

Using a Personal Device

Students may use their personal devices in class as instructed by the teacher. It is not expected that a teacher will need students to bring devices every day, and CCPS will not mandate that students provide their own technology at school. Individuals may use personal technology devices only when approved by a teacher or an administrator.

Overview

Teachers were given BYOD planning time. Websites and helpful strategies were shared and explored.

BYOD was implemented in May 2014 and used by students and teachers in grades 4 and 5.

BYOD has been used in math, social studies, and 5th grade science with an 80‐90% participation rate.

During this current school year, students began bringing  personal devices to school in October 2014.

4th grade has a 50‐60% participation rate in most classes.

BYOD at Arthur Middleton

All teachers are using Edmodo® and Livebinder®. These web‐based programs allow students to click on direct links to access links shared in class and respond to teacher generated questions from anywhere at any time.

Content areas have used BYOD on web‐quests to support the standards in both 4th and 5th grade social studies and science.

4th grade has taken a virtual field trip to Ellis Island using a Scholastic website.

BYOD at Arthur Middleton

Science classes used the QR Reader® app and QR codes to research specific sites in order to read about the human impact on the Chesapeake Bay.

A monthly BYOD calendar is prepared for parents.  This lets parents know which days their children should bring their device.

Benefits of BYOD

Improves communication and collaboration between studentsStudents use the Edmodo platform to ask each other about assignments given in class or how to troubleshoot around various links.

Extends support beyond the classroomTeachers respond to and clarify student questions while providing additional information. This allows the student to receive support outside of the classroom.Students who are absent can check in to see if they can complete assignments missed before returning to school.

No devices have been lost, stolen, or damaged at school.

There have been no disciplinary issues for the misuse of devices while at school.

Benefits of BYOD

Video links have been used for both the ‘flipped classroom’ model and review/practice of standards in the content areas and ELA.

Homework assignments using devices are completed eagerly.

Students are excited to go home and re‐do lessons taught at school and share the links with their families.

Areas of Focus

At the inception of BYOD at Middleton, the following were issues: Wi‐Fi connectivity (not enough access points)

Solution: The Wi‐Fi connectivity has been rectified. More access points have been added.

Obtaining the “certificate” for each device brand and initial log‐on difficulty.

Solution : ILT helped each individual student get online in the beginning stages.

Older generation models of devices have shorter battery life.Solution : Students who lose their battery power have been able to

transfer to a classroom computer or laptop to complete assignments.BYOD cannot be used while testing is ongoing.

Solution : Plan BYOD lessons in the afternoons  and not during testing periods so as not to compete with needed bandwidth.

Moving Forward

During the second semester students in grades 4 and 5 will average 2‐3 days per month to BYOD in math, social studies, science, and/or ELA classrooms.

3rd grade will participate in the second semester.

4th grade math teachers plan to use devices 3 times per week to work on teacher produced websites, Edmodo®, Reflex Math®, and e‐learning® math starting in January 2015.

Access to video streaming and online multimedia will allow BYOD to be taken to the next level.

This modification will bring change in several areas:DifferentiationPeer to peer instructionStudent facilitated lessons and decisionReaching students beyond the classroomIncreased engagement

Overview

Allows students to find information instantly

Empowers students to become active in their learning

Viewed by students as an effective way to learn

Staff Comments

“I think that BYOD is a good idea because it allows access to information at the students’ finger tips. If they do not know an answer and need to research it quickly, then they are able to quickly look it up and move on.”

“Helpful for research purposes, …a better approach on learning (more captivating), can use it during our Cougar Time so can get homework

done during lunch.”

“BYOD has made learning easier and more hands on when trying to access information.”

“With limited availability to computers due to testing, allowing the students to use their smartphones increases work production.”

“I would like to use BYOD more, but …there is trouble connecting to the WIFI [for

some users]. “

Student Comments

“BYOD is a great decision because it is very helpful in specific classes when you need the internet for research purposes.”

“BYOD has made getting homework done much easier and student interaction has become more apparent in all of my classes. I really think that it has made learning more efficient.”

“Coming from St. Charles, a school that did not utilize BYOD, I believe that it works wonders for teachers. It is much easier to incorporate students into the lesson and I feel like it sticks. All of my teachers use it on a daily basis. Work is done much more efficiently and I don’t go home with as much homework. BYOD is great and really makes the school day better!”
