is above reproach; his talents fit him for membership in a religious community devoted to Christian
education; he is docile, genial, and free from those faults of disposition which unfit one for the

nega6ve reaction to the skin tuberculin test. This means that at this time there is no evidence of the
organisms of tuberculosis in his (ki!l:-) body.
Tuberculin tests are recommended at regular intervals. Since your child had a negative
reaction it would be advisable to have the test repeated. This may be done by your private physician
or the next time these tests are done in the sc..liool.

~: Retention of Charles Fat.;0I'1 DYl the fo.crtlt~r.
My position: Retain him.
Reasons: He has been an asset to the school,
---many years in the difficult, thankless resident division job;
---one of the several key people that helped the school through the 1971-72 financial crisis;
---a needed stabilizing influence on the Chatsworth Campus;
---great rapport with the colml'nnity served by Chaminade Prep;
---an active and positive member of the Board of Directors;
---one of the sources of continuity among personnel in the school.

PAPAL VISIT OFFICE Diocese of Monterey
December 31, 1987
Reverend Charles Fatooh Associate Pastor, San Carlos Cathedral, 550 Church Street, Monterey, CA 93940
Dear Father Fatooh: i i
As Executive Director of the Papal Visit and on behalf of the Diocese of M9nterey, I would like to thank you personally for doing an absolutely s~perb job as the Director of Protocol on the occasion of the visit of Pope Jqhn Paul 11 to the Monterey Peninsula on September 17th of this year.
T~e visit by the Pope, a Head of State, was an extremely complex undert~klng that affected the entire community. It also required meticulous pl~nnlng and careful coordination and follow-through to orchestrate the dl~erse requirements to accomodate some 75,000 participants at three m~jor sites and to manage a workforce of some 3700 volunteers. Without q~estlon, your d1llgent efforts In a key leadership role played an tmportant part 1n the success of this Important endeavor.
' '
T~e position of Director of Protocol was exceptionally complex since it ericompassed responsibility for a series of tmRQrtantcireas to include
·---protocol functions for religfous hierarchy and senior government officials, ticketing at all three sites, accreditation to include security clearance for all those requiring special access, management of volunteers and arrangements for handicapped and those with special needs, It is also important to note that you assumed your duties relatively late 1n the planning process after the previous Incumbent fa1led to perform satisfactorily. Despite the enormity of the challenges, you immediately took charge and commenced to build a viable organization. Relying on your significant administrative and managerial background, you recruited a number of key personnel, initiated a series of computer programs to handle the voluminous data and then trained personnel to do the required jobs. Working long hours day and ntght, you faced every challenge and found

1nnovat1ve solut1ons to complex tasks. The proof of your excellence was that on the Seventeenth of September, all responslb111t1es and tasks w1th1n your purview at all three sites - Monterey Airport, Laguna Seca and Carmel M1sslon - went exceptionally well and that a series of last minute changes were accomodated to the satisfaction of all concerned. In sum, you did an absolutely superb job wh11e in a position of critical responslbi lity.
In closing, I want to stress the joy that you brought to so many participants on this historic occasion because of your exceptional managerial ab111ty and your tireless efforts. Your particular role in this Important endeavor was also duly noted by the National Papal Visit staff, the Vatican staff, and Bishop Thaddeus Shubsda. I also want to express my personal appreciattonJor_ygursui>.erb performance. It was an absolute delight to have wonderful individuals such as yourself In key positions of respons1b111ty upon whom I could rely for excellence. Thank you once again.
Sincerely,
~t:?J:H~~ David A. McNerney Director, Papal Visit

On January 3, 2006, Chaminade College Preparatory was recently served with a copy of the enclosed complaint for damages related to alleged sexual abuse associated with the conduct of au individual employed at the school during 1973and1974.
It is our understanding that Chaminade College Preparatory (known at the rime as Chaminade High School) was operated by. the Marianist Order dUring that rime frame. Based upon this, we respectfully tender the defense and indemnity of this claim to the Marianist Province of the USA.
At this juncture, Chaminade College Preparatory has until February 2, 2006 to file a notice of representation in this action. Please advise me at your earliest convenience of the legal counsel you have retained to handle this defense.
Sincere!

Two priests named Prelates of Honor·
In a statement issued by Monterey Bishop Sylvester Ryan it was announced that Pope John Paul II has conferred the title of Prelate of Honor upon Diocesan Chancellor and Moderator of the Curia, Father Charles Fatooh, and upon the pastor of St. Timothy's Parish, Morro Bay, Father Cornelius Sweeney. The title of Monsignor was bestowed upon the priests by papal decree April 16, 1997.
Bishop Ryan enjoined the Church of Monterey to keep Monsignor Fatooh and Monsignor Sweeney in prayer, and added, "All honors in the church remind us not only of good and faithful service to the church, but that all honors fundamentally speak to us of the instruction and example of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 'I have not come to be served, but to serve and to give my life as a ransom for others."' The Bishop concluded by thanking the Holy Father for the honor he accords these two priests and "the manner in which these honors reflect on the entire presbyterate and the People of God of the Diocese of Monterey."
Monsignor Fatooh was appointed Administrator of the Diocese April 29, 1991, and served in that capacity until the appointment of Bishop Ryan to the See of Monterey. Monsignor Sweeney has exercised pastoral ministry in parishes in Los Banos, Bakersfield, Santa Cruz and Salinas. Prior to serving as pastor in Morro Bay, he was pastor of St. Joseph's Parish, Cayucos.
The title Monsignor comes from the Italian monsignore, "my lord.'' It is an honor accorded certain clerics in the church calling them

COUNCIL OF RELIGIOUS Diocese of San Jose
Present:
Items of Business:
Minutes of the Meeting of January 16, 1990
The January meeting was held at Villa Sienna in Mountain View.
Michelle Henault, SND ; Hector Cruz, SM; Harriet Dow, OSF ; Maria Clotilde Edora, AR; William Farrell, SM ; Daniel Germann, SJ; Jeanne Keating, FSPA; Josefina Montalvo, RSCJ; William Nick, CSC; Michele Randall, DC; Joseph Stefanelli, SM; Patrick Sugrue, OCD; Nicki Thomas, SNJM; Gisela Wittershagan, OP; Patricia Marie Mulpeters, PBVM (Vicar).
1. Guatemala Trip Report -- Josefina Mondalvo, William Farrell
In the first hour of the meeting, Brother William Farrell gave a slide presentation of the first diocesan delegation trip to Central America. Among the four delegates were Brother William Farrell, Sister Josefina Montalvo of the Council. The slides gave a stark picture of the poverty, death, and suffering of the people of Guatemala who live in a modern day Church of the Catacombs.
The discussion which followed this presentation centered around a need for more active concern for Central America in the diocese, what our response might be, the need to send more delegates who will share their experience with ordinary church-going people,· and the initiation of regular visits to Central America sponsored by the Diocese.
/
A decision was made to plan a celebration on June 30, the Feast of the Guatemalan Martyrs. It was suggested that the Council work on this in collaboration with the Hispanic Office.
2. Issues Meeting Report -- Chair: Dan Germann
Dan Germann reported on the Issues Committee meeting: a. Need for new members for the committee. (Father Marius
would like to be part of the committee);. b. a discussion on Bill Farrell's presentation of prison
ministry; c. plans for the April 5 Issues Presentation for Religious of the
Diocese (although the council had recommended focus on the homeless, the committee also thought that the issue of Central America deserved consideration), they made the following proposal for the council's consideration:
1) divide the evening into two segments, one on homelessness and one on Central America
2) focus on various aspects of one issue, either homelessness or Central America
d. Members of the Issues Committee stated a preference for the second proposal, with the focus on Central America as they envisioned three components for the evening:
1) consciousness raising 2) a consideration of what actions could be undertaken
or proposed by religious regarding this issue 3) consideration of the need in the diocese for mobilizing
or coordinating the various efforts being made regarding this issue.
e. Members requested suggestions of names of presenters, as well as other suggestions for making the presentation.
Decision: After discussion of the proposals, the Council sent them back to the Issues Committee and empowered them to make the decision.
3. Celebration of Religious Life Day -- Chair: Sister Gisela
Gisela reported the following agenda for the celebration:
a. the event will begin at 4:30 p.m with a prayer service; b. this will be followed by a social session; c. to be followed by dinner featuring four kinds of foods--Mexican,
Filipino, Italian, and American; c. the Bishop will address the group after dinner; d. the event will close with the singing of the Salve Regina.
4. Evaluation of the December 2 Prayer Service
Committee members who were present at the service were agreed that it was very well done. Between 150 to 200 were in attendance. Most impressive were the candle ceremony and the intensity of the response of the people in the pews. All said that Transfiguration Church was a good site.
000096
d. Is this not more of an opportunity for the bishop to tell us his plans for restructuring and his vision for the local church and a future diocesan assembly?
No conclusions were reached.
Bill Farrell gave out three articles: The California Catholic Detention Ministers Statement of Principles: "Go to jail, if you can't pull strings," a San Jose Mercury News feature by an inmate in the Santa Clara Jail; and "I Was In Prison," from the Christopher News Notes for January/February 1987.
The Jail Ministry report was placed on the next meeting's agenda because time had run out.
The meeting adjourned at 6 p.m. Minutes by Harriet Dow, OSF

MARY
MARY MOTHER OF JESUS THE CHRIST
Catholic devotion to Mary rests on a twofold foundation deeplY. rooted in the Christian Bible: Mary is the mother of Jesus who is Godmade-flesh; arid Mary continues to relate to the People of God through the union that exists among all believers, living and dead, in the oneness of Christ.
The principal element of this foundation, and the one which is at the root of all else we can say about Mary, is that she is the MotherofGod. This title was given to her officially by .the Ecumenical Council held at Ephesus in 431 A:D. ·It was the council's way of affirming publicly.and solemnly what the generality of the· Christian people already believed at that time: that the son of Mary is the second person of the Blessed. Trinity who became one of us. In the Gq:;pels, Luke and Matthew tell us that Jesus, l.liepromised Messiah of the Jewish people, was conceived of Mary by the power of . the Holy Spirit. This "Word made flesh" was made flesh precisely in the wornb of Mary, !he Virgin who thus became
· the mother of her. God in human form.
Early. Christians also saw Mary as the "new Eve,". who )Jy ])er consent to God's .invitation )JroughtLifeto()urworld, inconlrastwit!1th¢first

say "yes" to God's plan for union with us. By her "yes", she made possible the becoming-flesh of God, and all the consequences of that great act our redemption, our salvation, our call to holiness and to eventual perfect union with our Creator. Because of that, she would, as she herself says, be called blessed by all generations of human beings until the end of our race. Graced by God, Mary was to give herself whole heartedly to the saving plan of God, as mother and associate of the Savior, her son.
Mary was the first disciple ofJ es us, accepting her place in Gods' plan and believing in the mission and destiny of her Son. But, like all Christians, she is not a believer in isolation from others whom her Son came to save. She shares in the fellowship and communion common to all believers, and like the others (saints) who are now enjoying the fullness of life andvision in God, she is keenly aware of those of us still here in this world, As we pray to them, we pray to her; even more, because she is.so intimately united with her Son, we pray to her in a very special way.

place as his Mother, his disciple, his associate. The Second Vatican Council speaks of Mary as "inseparably joined to the saving work of Christ." This is one more way of stating her holy motherhood of the Savior, and her continuing loving involvement in the salvation of all the brothers and sisters of her Son; indeed of the whole human race. As mother of Jesus, she is mother of God and mother of Christians; as disciple of Jes us, she is model of what the entire Church and each individual Christian is called to be.
Since the fustdays of the Church, our Lady (the Ma-donna) has held a very special place in the hean;s of Christians. After the crucifixion of Jesus, she showed herself as the true motherof the Church by her presem:e with the disciples, united in prayer, one mind.and one heart. As Christians of succeeding centuries meditated on her place in God's plan, they became progressively more conscious of her greatness and developed various ways of expressing their love and apprecia.tion and praise. This devotion (in the sense of devotedness) to Mary, PopePaulVl reminded us, fits "into the only worship that is rightly called 'Christian,' because it takes its orgin. and effectiveness from Christ and leads through Christin the Spirit to the father. · In the spnere of worship this devotion necessarily reflects God's redemptive plan in which a special form of veneration is appropriate to the singular place Mary occ11pies in that plan.
. Indeed every aµthentic development of Christian worship is necessarily followed by a fitting increil$~ofvener;i.tionfor the Mother of the Lord."

And he concludes his letter with a text form the Second Vatican Council:

Let them implore that shewhoaidedthebeginningofthe Church by her prayers may now, exalted as she is in heaven above all the saints and angels, intercede with her. Letter of Congratulations Dear Sister Julie Hyer and the staff of Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital,
Writing on behalf of the thousands of Roman Catholics who live in the Diocese of Monterey, I wish to offer congratulations to Dominican Hospital as it celebrates 50 years of service to the people of Santa Cruz.
We share your pride in the remarkable history you have accomplished since five Adrian Dominican Sisters and a handful of doctors worked diligently in a tiny facility across the street from the present site of the Dream Inn.
We share your pride in the growth you experienced as you expanded your mission and moved to the Sisters Hospital on Branciforte Avenue.
We share your pride in rallying the
support of Santa Cruz in the ambitious expansion program that brought Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital to its present site on Soquel Drtve.
And we share your pride in the recent expansion of the scope of your services through the establishment of the new Dominican Rehabilitation Services at the former AMI Community Hospital facility.
While we have seen many changes in the physical size and location of the hospital during the past five decades, the quality of Dominican's care has remained consistently high. You have constantly provided all people of Santa Cruz, regardless of religious creed or economic status, with care that embodies the compassion and healing Spirit of Jesus Christ.
We have indeed been blessed through

the worl<:s of the Adrian Dominican Sisters. You have provided Santa Cruz with a tradition of dedicated and determined, leadership-beginning with SisterGeorganne Duggan, and including, over the years, such leaders as Sister Ann Herringer, Sister Brigid McDonald, Sister Carolyn Harrison, Sister Josephine Sullivan, and yourself, Sister Julie Hyer.
May God bless you and your staff as you continue to serve our health care needs during the next decade when there will be even greater challenges for you to overcome as you make Christ's healing mission a reality for all of us.
Sincerely,

A 42 year-old Lebanese priest, who is a former Marianist brother, has been appointed as the new Chancellor and Moderator of the Curia for the Diocese of Monterey.
Father Charles Fatooh will replace Bishop-Elect Tod D. Brown of Boise, Idaho who has held the position since 1982. (The Vicar General position held by Brown will be assumed by Monsignor Declan Murphy, pastor of Carmel Mission Basilica).
At first, some thought the appointment of Fatooh was one that came very early in his priestly career, but many were quick to point out that Bishop-Elect Brown was 45 when he assumed the same duties.
The credentials that Father Fatooh brings to his position are more than varied. In fact, one local diocesan official commented that his creden· tials are overwhelming.
Father Fatooh was born in San Francisco and spent his early days at Holy Name Grammar School in the Sunset District. He went on to Riordan High School. He is the son of Mary Fatooh who resides in Fresno.
He entered the Marianist Novitiate in 1964 in Santa Cruz. In 1965, he took his first vows as a Marianist brother
at Star of the Sea Church in Santa Cruz. After his vows, he went on to Chaminade University to study and then took a break in his education.
During his break, the order deter· mined that he should go to medical school and study for his practical nurse license. This led to Father Fatooh working at the Marianist nursing home taking care of retired brothers.
Eventually, he went on to study under a history fellowship at Pepperdine University. Before he entered Pepperdine, he had left the Marianists. While at the unviersity, he studied psychology, education and received his teaching credentials.
When asked why he had left the Marianists, he said, "While working as a administrator at the nursing home, I did not have the opportunity to be part of the total community. I was living in a time of dramatic change in the church. The community had grown, and I had grown apart from them because I was not totally involved in the process of their growth. Suddenly, I felt out of the system. But I continued. to work for them as a layman. Our relationship to this day remains a close and healthy one."
When asked about the difficult transition to the lay state and then on to priesthood, Father Fatooh just smiled and said, "It wasn't really difficult at all. I believe in the team and family concepts of working together. They supported me and I supported them. In addition, there were so many other people supporting me in my days outside. I had support from family and friends. They helped

me when I entered the seminary to be a priest."
Over the years, Father Fatooh has learned administration and budget from a source of many experiences in the job environment. When asked about his administrative qualifications for the job he will now hold, he replied, "I have been fortunate to learn administrative skills from the very beginning. One of the things I have always tried to do is to surround myself with competent people. I am a team player. I learned early on from an administrator that it is important to play and work as a team. I remember that administrator deliberately making a decision and everyone was angry beCause they were not consulted. He told them-Now, are you ready to be team players? He made his point and I try to live by that example."
Father Fatooh was ordained for the diocese on April 24, 1985. He has served. as an ·associate pastor at San Carlos Cathedral and at Sacred Heart Church in Hollister. In addition to his priestly duties at the parish, he has also been Director of Campus Ministry and served as the. Protocol Officer
for 'the papal visit. When asked about his vision for the diocese and for his new position he was quick to point out that he has adopted no particular prestatement or philosophy. He said that he will of course use his team concept and then he said, '.'You know, my Lenten journey has been an interesting one. I think we must all be ambassadors of Christ. We must learn to be sensitive to the church of Monterey and to the larger church and to the total people involved in the church. Therefore, we must be an example by being the lights for Christ. We must be forgivers. We must be healers and we must show compas· sion. We are not perfect yet, and that's how we'll grow by learning together." · Father Charles Fatooh assumed his
duties at the Pastoral Office on March 1. He can be contacted at 408-373-4345. He is still ministering from Sacred Heart Church in Hollister. He does plan to move to the peninsula, but no new assignment for parish work has been made as yet.
