Recognition

“Good Morning Ms. Turner,” a gentle but deep voice whispers every morning from my offi ce door and each time I look up I know that it’s Charles Mack.

Each MOD, a student with perfect attendance is drawn for a prize. For the MOD of July, Charles’ name was chosen and he won V.I.P. tickets to the Janet Jackson concert. I could not think of a student more deserving of such a great prize!

Charles Mack is a Medical Assistant student here at Centura College, Norfolk. After class everyday, he can be found in the Library studying, reading, and helping other students. He’s respectful, has a warm spirit, and a positive attitude which makes him an outstanding student! No matter the situation, Charles always shares his kind words of wisdom. When presented with his prize, Mr. Mack was speechless. He stated how he had served over 20 years in the U.S. Navy and was never recognized or felt appreciated for his hard work.

You never know a student’s journey or the things that they have been through. It is our responsibility to encourage and motivate each and every student.

In the words of H. Jackson Brown,” Life doesn’t require that we be the best, only that we try our best.”

Ellen, Michelle, and Jennifer Whitaker are a mother and daughter trio who represent an exceptional pillar of success. This two gener-ation family participated in the Centura Col-lege, Midlothian campus Commencement Ceremony on July 22, 2011, graduating with honors from the Medical Assisting program.

Although approximately 80 other gradu-ates participated in the graduation held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, there were three graduates who demon-strated what love and support from family can produce. Ellen Whitaker proudly stated, “This is a big success for our family; I am so proud of my two girls! We have been a great support for one another.” Michelle and Jen-nifer also showed great ad-

Many other students also celebrated their success by graduating from their programs. There were over 800 guests in attendance who were there to witness the achievements of the 2011 graduates.

The entire family at the Midlothian campus would like to congratu-late the entire graduat-ing class of 2011. May you continue to experi-ence huge success in all of your future en-deavors!

Mara’s neighbor was transported to the nearest hospital, where he has fortunately recovered from this ordeal. Thankfully, Mara was there at that moment and was able to use what she learned in her Basic Nursing I class to save her neighbor’s life! The Centura College, Midlothian campus, would like to congratulate Ms. Mara Still on a job well done!

Veronica Thomas, President of Survi-vors Not Victims of Sexual Abuse (SNV), holds counseling meetings with survivors of sexual abuse. Ms. Thomas asked about having a massage party for her survivors. Five students from Centura College’s Mas-sage Therapy program (Gloria Henderson, Terrell Jones, Soraya Howell, and Lis trice Bel fi eld) participated in the event with no hesitation. The event was held April 9. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxing with dim lighting and music. A presentation about the benefi ts of massage was given by Shaunay Nichols. The survivors that showed up re-ceived a massage. There was a gentleman

that suffers from sleep apnea and snores loudly, but once he was on Terrell’s table re-ceiving his mas-sage the snoring went away.

Chesapeake on the Runby Jeannie Gonzalez, CCHE

The annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon took place this year on Sunday, September 4th. Centura College, Chesapeake campus showed its support via a medical tent that was set up on 17th Street at the beach. Led by Program Coordinator John Cawthorne, six Medical Assisting students (Bernetta Boone, Erika Jenkins, Tim Larsen, Angie McClelland, Sandra Ruffi n, Doro Trail) and one graduate (Christina Chiarulli), pro-vided aide to marathon runners.

Students started their day with quick ref-erence classes in hyperthermia and heat stroke. According to Mr. Cawthorne, ap-proximately 80 patients out of the 32,000 runners were seen in their tent. Students saw three patients that suffered from hypo-thermia, several that experienced shortness of breath, at least one that was incoherent, and saw a plethora of blood blisters. The Medical Assisting students checked vital signs and for potassium level decrease. They issued water, bananas, handed out aspirin or Tylenol, made ice packs, and treated, and dressed many blood blisters.

Great job done by all!

There was also a woman with multiple personalities who did not want a massage, but watched Ms. Thomas get a massage. The event was wonderful. All participants loved their massages and were glad that the students took time to do this event. The massage students enjoyed the event, fel-lowship and connection with the clients. Right before the closing of the event, the lady with multiple personalities came back in the room and was interested in receiving a massage. The client began with a chair massage and loved it. The woman was pleased with herself and her breakthrough and stated she could not wait to tell her therapist about her accomplishment. It was a great and wonderful experience and the ladies have decided to continue to give back to the community by participating in massage parties. The ladies called them-selves, “The Ladies of Divine Touch.”

Job Fair for Centura Instituteby Danielle Brown, CORL

Terri Crowder, MT Instructor

In most of the country, the summer is soon coming to a close, but not in Centura Institute. The staff is always ready to meet and greet our “future” healthcare professionals. Centura In-stitute was invited to participate in a Health and Career Fair sponsored by Orlando Health and Rehabilitation Center. So, on a hot summer day in August, Karen Stewart, Ray Downen, and Emmanuel Blaise were ready to share a little about the treasure that awaited our “fu-ture” students at Centura Institute. They were able to enjoy a relaxing massage by either Kelly Berbermeyer or Terri Crowder, our ex-pert clinicians and instructors in the Massage

Therapy department. The next frontier for our visitors was to learn about the Medical Bill-ing and Coding program. This is where Amrit Hans showed her expertise. She was able to share her passion for her fi eld and share what opportunities were available to them in this ever growing fi eld.

After the relaxation of the massage, it was time to get their blood pressure checked. Under the expert supervision of the instruc-tors, Maria LaGreca and Kathy Cole, Am-mena Ali and Tymiller Newton, Prac-tical Nursing (PN) students assessed the blood pressure of many visitors to the Centura booth. All were educated in the importance of proper blood pressure control.

Orlando Health and Rehabilitation Center is a clinical site for Centura Institute where students have had the chance to experience for one of their PN clinical rotations. We are ever grateful for our relationship with this wonderful facility and their commit-ment to the community.

the Alexandria Campusby Haneef Shakur, CWAS

“Sawadee-kaa” which means hello and goodbye in Thai language, was a welcomed gesture when Mr. David Roylance brought the wonders of Thai massage and its culture to Centura College’s Alexandria campus. “It is not just enough to give a person the body work of Thai massage, but you also must give them an insight into the culture and language where they can get the whole feel of what Thai massage is.” Mr. Roylance studied and lived in Thailand for some time while earning a prestigious certifi cation from the Old Medicine School.

Demonstrations were given to students and instructors on various techniques while be-ing presented with an interactive presenta-tion on the history of Thai massage and the concept of healing. Mr. Roylance certainly had their attention as students questioned him on the value and rewards of this unique style of massage, all while volunteering to be the next to receive one! “Now this is some-thing I want to do,” said C h a r l a i n e Ga l l ing ton who had just received a massage, “I want this to be my em-phasis when I graduate.”

The Thai Institute, located in Northern Vir-ginia, is the largest in this area and has a sister school in Thailand where graduates from the U.S.-based institute can learn for free! “It is recommended that students ex-perience real Thai massage in Thailand if they are able to,” said Mr. Roylance. Cen-tura College students will be visiting the Thai Institute next semester. “I thought it was brilliant! I have to learn more!” exclaimed Faith Rogers, a cur-rent massage student.

Mrs. Dumas gave her students in her Medi-cal Offi ce Procedures class a task. She split the classroom into two teams (A and B). They were told to look up all the supplies needed to stock a clinic. Once both groups fi gured out the items needed, they broke the items into their appropriate categories: Clin-ical, General, and Administrative supplies.

Both groups decided to split the three catego-ries up, which allowed the teams to do a more detailed search on places that provided the

needed sup-plies. Once n a r r o w i n g down the dif-ferent places, they had to c o m p a r e prices for the amount of items re-quired to run the business.

Centura Institute Shows the Importance of the First Impression

by Edward Steele, CORLMen’s Wearhouse opened the window of opportunity for our students to learn the im-portance of dressing for success in the work-place. The students learned interview prepa-ration and how to make a fi rst impression. It is a tremendous benefi t for outside organiza-tions to come in so that our students may see what is going on in the corporate world.

Three managers came in from Men’s Wear-house, with enthusiasm, to teach our stu-dents the true importance of making the fi rst impression on a job interview through

Mr. Settle’s Criminal Justice class had a very prestigious guest Instructor in June. Louis Cei, PhD, came for a week to team-teach the Criminal Justice students. He comes to CRIW from The Virginia Department of Corrections, where he currently serves as the Special Programs Manager. Before that, he served as Chairman of the Central Classifi ca-tion Board for the Corrections agency from 1976 to 1999. He is a published author, most recently appearing in Corrections Today. We are all excited and pleased that Dr. Cei is now an honorary member of the CRIW family!

appearance, presentation, and professional communication. Men’s Wearhouse has simi-lar trainings called ‘Dress for Success’ with major corporations and we were given the same experience here at Centura Institute.

We remind our students that they have the same opportunities as anyone else if they ap-ply themselves and learn the importance of being effective in the workplace. Students who learn to set specifi c goals combined with job readiness and a plan of action will fi nd successful job placement in today’s market.

Dr. Sapp’s offi ce would have no steady cli-entele, therefore the teams needed to fi gure out what expendable supplies would be stocked in every room and what would be stocked in the storage cabinet.

The teams were told that after getting all their information together they would need to present it on a poster or in their presentations.

The teams presented to Dr. Sapp, the Direc-tor of Education, Student Services, the De-partment Coordinator, and the Medical Bill-ing Instructor. The fi nal decision made by the group was that Team B was selected because their poster was informative and their presenta-tion was professional and they answered questions confi dently. Therefore, team B’s plan was the best choice.

The Charleston campus held a career fair on Thursday June 23rd, which proved to be quite successful. We had Align Life, Aero-tek, First Federal, Veterans Affairs, Account Temps, Atlantic Coast Family Chiropractic, American Red Cross, ATC Healthcare and Dialysis Clinic attend the event and they met with 92 students.

Our goal was to create new relationships with potential employers and expose our stu-dents to the hiring process. In the weeks lead-ing up to the career fair, we held three semi-nars teaching students about resume writing and interviewing skills. We wanted to make sure every student was well prepared before meeting employers. This was a wonderful op-portunity for students to meet with employers and for them to learn about Centura students. During the career fair, we had raffl es and gave out prizes and we also had the radio station, Z93.3 come out on site to broadcast. The whole staff pitched in and helped to make this a very eventful career fair. The career fair was a wonderful experience for both the employers and students, and we are looking forward to our Fall career fair.

Charleston Career Fair a Success

by Michael Huh, CCHAThe student speaker was Erik Caurthens. He spoke about the determination to suc-ceed, stating: “I look at each and every one of you and know that just like me you are a “Mountain Mover.” He also encouraged them to make “a positive difference in the lives of others around you!”

Ms. Beth Hall, Campus Executive Director, presented two awards. The Staff Member of the Year awards were presented to Mrs.

Dominique Hicks-Gill, Finan-cial Aid Offi cer, and Ms. Brenda Houck, Career Services Coor-dinator. Hall congratulated the 2011 Graduates, especially com-mending Ms. Mary Custis-Mor-gan, Student Advisor; and Ms. Debra Hays-Humphries, Mas-sage Therapy Instructor, for earn-ing their degrees.

Simmons presented the Coordi-nator of the Year award to Mrs. Lori Bedford, Coordinator of the

Medical program. Mrs. Amelia Level of the Medical program, received Instructor of the Winter Quarter 2011; and Ms. Debra Hays-Humphries of the Massage Therapy program received Instructor of the Spring Quarter 2011.

Ms. Mary Morgan, Student Advisor, recog-nized the following graduates for outstand-ing attendance; Susan Sebzda, Vicky Sadler, Michael Oliver, and Edgar Cruz-Senga.

Congratulations to the Graduates of Centura College, Virginia Beach campus!

“To be successful in my program in efforts to, at graduation or soon after, achieve gainful em-ployment.” This is the goal that new students of Tidewater Tech have embedded in their minds as they kick-off their journey in their program. With varying backgrounds, each students prepare themselves for the road ahead in order to reach the ultimate goal of obtaining employment in their fi eld.

With the journey ahead, there are elements that these students must consider. One of these elements is having a challenged back-ground. Students question the probability of achieving gainful employment, from the beginning. “We explain that it is NOT im-possible to achieve employment if they have

Securing the Future, Improving from the Pastby Erika Flowers, TTT

a challenged background. We also explain that obtaining a skill in a trade makes the student marketable in the workforce,” said Kevin Benton, Director of Admissions.

Tidewater Tech has a pilot program that assists students in sharpening their profes-sionalism in the areas of self-presentation, written communication, goal-setting, fi nan-cial responsibility and much more. In this course, the students touch on presenting themselves to employers, even when an-swering questions about their background.

“A lot of students have had negative expe-riences trying to fi nd jobs with a challenged

background. I explain that sometimes it’s not the background that is keeping them from employment, but the way they are presenting themselves. Most employers are just looking to hear that you recognize you’ve made a mistake and have taken steps to change,” said Sarah Heath, Professional Development Instructor.

Mr. Gerald Smith, an HVAC grad, knows fi rst-hand what obstacles present them-selves when job searching with a challenged background. He was successfully hired in a position related to his fi eld upon graduation. “You have to keep pushing and keep a posi-tive attitude. Just a week ago, I received a security clearance!” said Gerald Smith.
