Demand Side Management

Demand Side Management (DSM) can be broadly defined as the set of actions that can be taken to influence the level and timing of the consumption of energy.  There are two common subsets of Demand Side Management: 

•Energy Efficiency

•Load Management (also known as Demand Response)

Demand Side Management

• Part of resource mix available to meet increased customer demand for electricity

• Tool for addressing increased local, state and federal environmental policy and regulatory requirements

• Assists customers in making sound energy decisions– Greater ability to manage energy usage– Increased control over energy bills– Improved levels of comfort and customer satisfaction

• Cost effective programs with sufficient, timely and stable program funding can be win/win for customers and SCE&G

• 250,000 solicitations sent via e-mail and mail to a cross-section of SCE&G customers− 13 months uninterrupted electric usage at a single residence

• Home Energy Survey completed by customer− On-line or paper version

• Home Energy Report− Customized report based on answers to Home Energy

Survey− Focused on whole house electric usage

• Monthly My Home Energy Updates− Includes a comparison of customer house to “like”

house− Energy saving tips and recommendations− On-line participants can track energy saving endeavors

Energy Information Display

Program Overview

• Provide residential SCE&G electric customers with:

− Near real-time insight into electric usage and costs

− Additional clarity into how changes in activities will change monthly energy costs

• Limited Phase 1 Introduction− 243 residential participants

− 42 small business participants

• Program is currently under evaluation

• Phase 2 launch date to be determined

Home Energy Check-up

Program Overview

• The Check-up is offered as an in-home free service.

• A visual inspection of the home is performed to assess its thermal efficiency.

• The findings of the assessment and recommendations are left with the customer.

• A kit of CFLs, pipe insulation, and/or water heater tank wrap are left with the customer, if applicable.

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®

Program Overview

• Program promotes a comprehensive, whole-house approach to improving the energy efficiency and comfort of existing homes.

• Program will stimulate consumer demand of retrofit services while developing a contractor infrastructure to perform the work and promote the program.

ENERGY STAR® New HomesProgram Overview

• The objective of this Program is to increase awareness and sales of ENERGY STAR qualified new homes.

• The Program will offer home builders a portfolio of incentives, marketing tools, and support.

• Opportunity for SCE&G customers to gain access to higher performing and more comfortable homes.

• The new ENERGY STAR version 2.5 specifications effective on April 1, 2011; version 3.0 effective January 1, 2012.

Program Overview

• Provide incentives to offset the cost of qualifying energy efficiency projects not covered by the Prescriptive Program– Projects may be unique to a customer’s operation

• Customers will apply for incentives in advance of initiating any work– All projects will be pre-approved– Incentives capped at $25,000 per customer account, per year
