Last RiverDogs Game: April 11 The RiverDogs’ fifth-largest crowd in team history poured through the gates of Riley Park as 8,046 onlookers took in a 4-0 RiverDogs defeat to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Thursday night’s home opener at The Joe. Former second-rounder Matt Sauer (0-1) loaded up the bases to start the ballgame before wiggling out of the jam with back-to-back punchouts to the delight of the sellout crowd. Sauer had not given up a hit through four innings until catcher Zac Susi charged a leadoff double into the opposite field to get a Grasshoppers (4-4) rally started in the fifth. With two outs, shortstop Connor Kaiser walked before first baseman Mason Martin laced a two-bagger to right, for the biggest hit of the night. Greensboro added insurance tallies in the sixth and ninth as Charleston’s offense struggled to muster anything off Hoppers righty Osvaldo Bido (2-0). The Dominican Republic native extended his scoreless innings streak to 11.0 straight to start the year, striking out five over six frames for his second win in as many starts. Breaux collected his second mulit-hit game in two days for the Dogs. The South Jersey native struck out a career-high 11 in 4.0 innings to pick up his first South Atlantic League save. The spectacular effort came just five days after he had tied a previous career-best with 10 strikeouts on Friday night in Columbia over a five-inning relief stint for his season debut. The University of New Orleans product has fanned 21 of 32 hitters faced to start the year (65.6%), a strikeout rate and K total that ranks tops in all of Minor League Baseball to start the season. Semple enjoyed a brief 2-game call-up to end last season with Charleston, when he struck out 17 over 12 frames and garnered “South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week” honors. Stowers Impressing First Week on the Job: New Yankee farmhand Josh Stowers is off to a hot start with his new organization, hitting a cool .357 (10-for-28) after extending his hitting streak to 7 straight games with a double in Thursdays home opener. The former Mariners farmhand has now reached base in 16 of his 34 plate appearances (6 BB) with the Dogs, good for a .471 OBP that ranks 11th in the league. He is one of five hitters in the league with an active 7-game hit streak or more. The Louisville product was acquired by the Yankees this offseason in the three-team deal that sent Sonny Gray to Cincinnati. Lord of Grayreach: Charleston second baseman Kyle Gray has provided some pop from the second base spot for the RiverDogs to start the week on the road with a home run, double, and triple to his name, good for a .994 and 5 RBI, both leading the RiverDogs. The West Virginia University product’s longball on Tuesday marked the second of the season hit by the RiverDogs and the eighth of his professional career after tying for the team-lead with seven homers with Staten Island last year. Pinstriped Prospects: The RiverDogs will again tap into a deep farm system in the New York Yankees. Losing some of their organizational talent due to promotions and trades in the last year, the Yankees’ farm system fell from the second-best system in the game to 20 th on the Baseball America rankings.
