That is not the case this sea- son, as Boyne City welcomes over 30 girls to the entire pro- gram, enough to field both full JV and freshman rosters. Also, another familiar face will be gracing the sidelines for Boyne as Kevin Fitzpatrick takes over the program after spending the last three seasons as an assistant to former coach Jim Brown. Fitzpatrick is known for lead- ing the Boyne City boys pro- gram during the 1990’s, and brings over 20 years of experi- ence to the bench. Tanner will step in right away and play, while Rainy will get to see action in Janu- rary. “Were improved over a year ago,” Fitzpatrick said. “We have most of the girls back, were not very tall, but we are very ath- letic, and will compete every night.” Fitzpatrick noted that the team chemistry is better than expected at this point, and it will get even better as the season pro- gresses. “We have a lot of games early,” the coach said. “It will give us a way to measure where we’re at, and we can build from there.” Boyne City opened play at Cheboygan on Monday, Novem- ber 28, and hosted Gaylord St. Mary on November 30, and will host Leeland Public School on Friday, December 2. BOYNE CITY – The Ramblers

will look to rebound from a 2010-

11 season that saw only one vic-

tory as the inexperienced squad

went 1-20 on the year due to low

program numbers.

That is not the case this sea-

son, as Boyne City welcomes

over 30 girls to the entire pro-

gram, enough to field both full

JV and freshman rosters. Also,

another familiar face will be

gracing the sidelines for Boyne

as Kevin Fitzpatrick takes over

the program after spending the

last three seasons as an assistant

to former coach Jim Brown.

Fitzpatrick is known for lead-

ing the Boyne City boys pro-

gram during the 1990’s, and

brings over 20 years of experi-

ence to the bench.

The Ramblers will bolster a

roster of 10 girls, with nine of

them playing varsity ball last

season, so Boyne will look to

that experience to carry them

through a tough early schedule.

The top returner for the Ram-

blers is Rachel Butler, who is en-

tering her fourth season on the

varsity, while juniors Haylee

Boughton, Jessica Selissen and

Mary Meyers, along with sopho-

mores Kylie Hicks, Taylor Baker

and Jenny Selissen also return

for Boyne.

New to the program are East

Jordan transfers senior Tanner

McCune and sophomore Rainy

McCune. Tanner will step in

right away and play, while Rainy

will get to see action in Janu-

rary.

“Were improved over a year

most of the girls back, were not

very tall, but we are very ath-

Fitzpatrick noted that the

team chemistry is better than

gresses.

“We have a lot of games early,”

the coach said. “It will give us a

BOYNE FALLS – New to the

program this season but not new

to coaching is Loggers first year

coach Lyndel Ingalls-Sage. In-

galls-Sage coached for a number

of years in the Gaylord girl’s bas-

ketball program.

The Loggers will once again

look to the leadership of senior

Kristen Matelski this season.

Kristen is entering her fifth year

on the varsity and will look to es-

tablish a tough inside presence

for Boyne Falls.

Joining her will be a cast of re-

“We have guards that are quick

dish.” Coach Ingalls-Sage said.

“They penetrate well, we will

look for them to finish as well.”

With this being her first season

at Boyne Falls, Ingalls-Sage looks

to build a solid foundation and

focus on defense with the ability

to stretch it to full court with a

CHARLEVOIX – After a 2010-11

season that saw injuries to key

players at different times in

which Charlevoix finished with

an 8-14 record, coach Leslie Hoff-

man enters her second season at

the helm.

Hoffman will also look to build

upon the success and experience

of this season’s volleyball pro-

gram. “We will take that big

game experience and use it to

our advantage,” the coach said.

“These girls know the feeling of

playing in pressure games and

pressure situations and staying

poised.”

Despite having only a couple of

practices as a unit with the pro-

longed volleyball season, Hoff-

man is excited to see how much

progression that the team has

made despite the late start and it

looks to be a promising season

from her squad.

With eight of the 13 Rayders

being members of the semifinal-

ist volleyball team, they have a

lot of ground to cover in a short

period of time. The biggest tran-

sition for the girls will be the con-

ditioning from one sport to the

next.

“The conditioning is very dif-

ferent from volleyball to basket-

ball,” the coach said. “But these

girls work hard and will make

that transition.”

Leading the team will be five

returnees from last year in the

form of seniors Jenna Way,

Kelsey Way, Kelly Greyerbiehl,

Megan Peters and junior Sydney

Carlson.

Jenna Way and Carlson both

missed time last season with in-

juries but look to take on impor-

tant roles for their team this

season in sharing the point guard

position. Jenna poured in about

11 points per game last year,

while Carlson finished at about a

five ppg clip. Both are solid out-

side threats, and have stepped up

their games in efforts to finish

more efficiently.

The inside game of Peters will

be counted on to control the

boards and look to finish easy

scoring opportunities. Junior

Karley Pearsall along with Bailey

Stevens and freshman Madeline

Boss will be counted on as well to

help supply Charlevoix with

strong post play and inside scor-

ing. All players display nice

touches around the hoop with the

ability to hit shots.

“We have some good depth, es-

pecially in the post,” Hoffman

said. “We will look to run and

play up-tempo, finishing at the

basket, and increase our scoring

average from last season.” “With

the late start, once we get out legs

under us, we should be fine.”

Others looking to contribute to

the success of the Lady Rayders

are Greyerbiehl, Katie Hybl and

Anna Way. Greyerbiehl and Hybl

will lead the defense, with

Greyerbiehl being the spark plug

that ignites the team. Anna Way

is a shooter that sees the floor

well and will complement the

Charlevoix outside game with

her ability to stretch the oppos-

ing defenses.

Some of the goals that the team

has set are more consistent fin-

ishing at the basket and limiting

turnovers as well as having each

player develop solid fundamental

skills.

“I’m very excited for this sea-

son, this is a fun group to coach, I

really enjoy working with them,”

Hoffman noted. “We know our

conference will be very tough,

and we expect to contend every

time we take the floor.”

The Rayders played host to

Ellsworth on November 29, and

will host Cheboygan on Decem-

ber 1 and Mesick on December 2.

Junior Varsity games begin at

6pm.

EAST JORDAN – The Red Dev-

ils will look to a large group of

seniors to lead the way for Coach

Steve Hines. Hines has more than

10 years of coaching experience,

including the last three as the

varsity coach.

“Were excited about the sea-

son,” coach Hines said. “We have

five seniors, and that experience

will be a big asset.”

Coach Hines also noted that

the team has been working very

hard this preseason and they all

bring a good attitude to the gym

and it is paying off with good

team chemistry.

East Jordan which finished 8-

13 last season, will carry a 12 per-

son roster, including 2010-11 All-

conference selections Valerie Pe-

ters and Grace Howes.

Peters, a junior in her third

season on the varsity, will run

the point for the Red Devils.

Hines noted that Peters contin-

ues to improve each season and

expects big things from her.

Howes was the Red Devils lead-

ing scorers last season and looks

to take on a similar role this year.

Seniors Emily Crick and Paige

Roberts both have experience

playing inside and along with

Jordyn Bacchus, last season’s

sixth-man, look to help control

the boards for East Jordan. Bac-

chus is a good outside shooter

that will keep defenses honest by

knocking down long range shots.

Junior Brooklynn Richards is

battling hard for a starting posi-

tion, as are juniors Katelyn

Holm, Brianna Newberry and

Allie Sutton. All three saw ample

playing time on the junior var-

sity squad last season and will

push for playing time.

“We expect a strong conference

again this season,” Hines noted.

“But with our senior leadership,

I look for us to step it up and play

hard.”

East Jordan opened their sea-

son on November 30 at home

against Central Lake, and will

host Buckley on December 2.

ELLSWORTH – The Lady

Lancers welcome first year coach

Brenda Stevens to the helm this

season. Coach Stevens will take

over a successful Lancer pro-

gram and look to continue that

tradition. Stevens has worked

under some of the most success-

ful coaches in Lancer history, in-

cluding Ike Boss and Mark

Essenberg.

“I’m a firm believer that of-

fense wins games and defense

wins championships,” Coach

Stevens said.

And leading the defending

Northern Lakes Conference

champions will be Emily Veen-

stra. The 6’3” center will be in

her fifth season on the varsity

and looks stronger than ever. De-

fensively, her presence alters

many opponents ability to get to

the basket, and offensively, Veen-

stra will draw the attention of

many double and triple teams,

but is an accomplished passer

that can open things up for her

teammates. She is also closing in

on the 1000 point milestone for

her career.

Another bright spot will be

Dana Neumann, the 5’10” senior

will look to help shoulder the in-

side load. Juniors Kari Steenwyk

and Tara Essenberg will man the

back court and look to break

down opposing defenses along

with knocking down outside

shots.

“I’m excited for the season,”

noted coach Stevens. “We have

another chance at the conference

and a good chance at the district,

but we can’t take any game for

granted.”

Also, looking to see ample play-

ing time for Ellsworth will be

juniors Kendra Warner and

Whitney Heard, along with soph-

omores Taryn Rosma and Ashley

Drenth.

Ellsworth opened play at

Charlevoix on November 29 and

will host Central Lake on Decem-

Question & Answers AboutSelling Real Estate

Compliments of Mike Stark,

Stark Realty, inc. (231) 536-7700

Prepping and

staging a house.

Every seller wants

her home to sell

fast and bring top

dollar. Does that

sound good to

you? Well, it’s not

luck that makes

that happen. It’s

careful planning

and knowing how

to professionally spruce up your

home that will send home buyers

scurrying for their checkbooks.

Here is how to prep a house and

turn it into an irresistible and

marketable home.

Here’s How:

4. Rearrange Bedroom Clos-

ets and Kitchen Cabinets.

Buyers love to snoop and will

open closet and cabinet doors.

Think of the message it sends if

items fall out! Now imagine what

a buyer believes about you if she

sees everything organized. It says

you probably take good care of

the rest of the house as well. This

means:

Alphabetize spice jars.

Neatly stack dishes.

Turn coffee cup handles facing

the same way.

Hang shirts together, buttoned

and facing the same direction.

Line up shoes.

5. Rent a Storage Unit.

Almost every home shows bet-

ter with less furniture. Remove

pieces of furniture that block or

hamper paths and walkways and

put them in storage. Since your

bookcases are now empty, store

them. Remove extra leaves from

your dining room table to make

the room appear larger. Leave just

enough furniture in each room to

showcase the room’s purpose and

plenty of room to move around.

You don’t want buyers scratching

their heads and saying, “What is

this room used for?”

6. Remove/Replace Favorite

Items.

If you want to take window cov-

erings, built-in appliances or fix-

tures with you, remove them now.

If the chandelier in the dining

room once belonged to your great

grandmother, take it down. If a

buyer never sees it, she won’t

want it. Once you tell a buyer she

can’t have an item, she will covet

it, and it could blow your deal.

Pack those items and replace

them, if necessary.

7. Make Minor Repairs.

Replace cracked floor or

counter tiles.

Patch holes in walls.

Fix leaky faucets.

Fix doors that don’t close prop-

erly and kitchen drawers that

jam.

Consider painting your walls

neutral colors, especially if you

have grown accustomed to purple

or pink walls.

(Don’t give buyers any reason

to remember your home as “the

house with the orange bath-

room.”)

Replace burned-out light bulbs.

If you’ve considered replacing

a worn bedspread, do so now!

This is an exceptional upgraded gem that of-

fers a lot more interior living space than it

may appear from street. We’re talking three

bedrooms, three baths, a spacious and open in-

terior layout embracing just over 1,680 square

feet of living area that has been meticulously

and painstakingly remodeled to create and ex-

traordinary family-friendly environment.

This kitchen, dining and living room areas

flow seamlessly together. Features in these

areas include gorgeous hardwood flooring

throughout, and an “L-shaped” kitchen with

large center island that also includes a con-

venient snack bar, beautifully finished wood

cabinetry contrasted with dark countertops,

stainless steel appliances and recessed light-

ing fixtures. A sliding glass doorway in the

living area offers easy access to a rear patio

that is an ideal spot to relax and enjoy the

pleasant back yard area spring, summer and

fall.

Another highlight of this home is a wonder-

ful master bedroom and bath suite, a feature

not typically found in a home at this price

level. As with the entire home, this space has

Part 2

also been nicely remodeled and is both invit-

ing and extremely functional.

The location is also superb; close to schools

and the many shopping, recreational, dining

and entertainment opportunities available in

and around East Jordan.

This delightfully remodeled East Jordan

home is also a terrific real estate bargain;

listed at just $79,900. For additional informa-

tion or to arrange for a tour of this home,

please call Jennifer Burr-Cutler at 231-536-

7700 or email at

[email protected].
