BOYNE CITY – With the MHSAA

girl’s basketball tournament crown-

ing its respective Class champions

over the past weekend, bringing a

close to the 2011-12 basketball sea-

son, the Charlevoix County News,

after a lot of deliberation, is proud

to announce the Girls All-Area Bas-

ketball “Dream Team”.

It took some planning and cooper-

ation from area administration

along with team coaches and the se-

lected student athletes, but we were

able to assemble an array of talent

in one location, and after seeing the

basketball players showcasing their

skills and conversing with one an-

other, there was no doubt that the

selections made were correct.

Leading the pack for the 2011-12

season is Player of the Year, East

Jordan’s Valerie Peters. Peters, a

junior and the Red Devils point

guard, used her explosive speed to

navigate her way through oppo-

nent’s full court pressure along

with her ability to break down de-

fenses in the half court setting to

get to the basket. Peters was also

able to stretch the defense regard-

less of the different looks teams

threw at her as she knocked down

long range triples from beyond the

arch. She scored a career high of 31

against Charlevoix as she was in

“the zone,” shooting an amazing 68

percent from the floor in the East

Jordan victory on January 10.

Val, averaged 13.9 points per

game, over

three rebounds and

two steals per contest. She got to

the charity stripe 136 times, nailing

70 percent of her free throws, but

the intangibles of being the floor

leader and giving 110% on both

ends of the floor are what sets her

apart from other athletes.

Joining her on the All-Area

“Dream Team” are East Jordan sen-

ior teammates Jordyn Bacchus and

Grace Howes. Boyne City’s Tanner

McCune, Rainy McCune and Kylie

Hicks, along with the Boyne Falls

duo of Emily Matelski and Kristen

Matelski. Charlevoix is represented

by Kelsey Way, Jenna Way and Syd-

ney Carlson, and the Ellsworth tan-

dem of Emily Veenstra and Dana

Neumann.

Bacchus, started all of the Red

Devils 21 games this season, and ac-

cording to coach Steve Hines,

got better each time she took

the court. That was appar-

ent, with her best game of

the year coming in the dis-

trict contest against

Charlevoix, where Jordyn

scored 17 points, shooting 6-

of-8 from the floor, including 1-

of-2 from beyond the arch, and

shot 100 percent from the free

throw line. She also grabbed five re-

bounds, dished out two assists and

made two steals.

Hines also noted that Bacchus

was an integral part of the success

of the Red Devils squad, being a

true team player and always play-

ing hard. She shot 70 percent on

the season from the free throw

line, averaged four rebounds

per game from her guard posi-

tion and finished second on the

team in assists.

Howes, was a four year varsity

starter, she averaged 11.5 points per

game, eight rebounds, three steals,

and two assists on the season, with

a high of 24 points coming against

Boyne City on January 6.

Coach Hines summed Grace up in

a few simple words, “A very good

player.” And I don’t think that you

would get any arguments out of any

of her opponents either.

With her versatility, Howes was

able to take her opponents both in-

side and outside, and if she didn’t

lead the team in a category, she was

a very close second.

Boyne City’s Tanner McCune,

Rainy McCune and Kylie Hicks

helped lead a resurgence to the

Lady Ramblers basketball program.

Tanner, a senior in her first sea-

son as a Rambler, was either the

leader or close to the top of each of

the statistical categories for Boyne.

She was the only player on the team

to play in all 22 of the Ramblers

contests. She scored a season high

of 28 points in Boyne City’s 51-40

win over Grayling on February 17.

Tanner averaged 12.5 points per

game, eight boards, three steals and

three steals per contest.

Rainy McCune, a sophomore

stepped right in just before the mid-

way point of the season and gave

Boyne City some instant punch to

the lineup. McCune used her ball

handling abilities to help run the

Ramblers offense, and her ability to

hit shots from all over the court,

opened up the inside game for

Boyne.

Rainy chipped in with 11.6 points

per game, made four steals each

contest, grabbed 3.3 rebounds and

dished out 3 assists each game.

Sophomore Kylie Hicks used her

leaping ability to grab rebound

after rebound for the Ramblers and

block shots of opponents that

thought they had a clear path to the

basket. Hicks grabbed double digit

rebounds in many contests down

the stretch.

She closed the season strong with

6.5 points and six rebounds per

game.

ters Emily and Kristen Matelski to

provide leadership as well as a ma-

jority of the scoring for Boyne

Falls this season.

Emily, a sophomore in her third

season on the varsity, led the Log-

gers with a near 14 points per

game average along with nine re-

bounds and seven assists per con-

test. Matelski was the motor that

made Boyne Falls go, as she was in

charge of the ball handling respon-

sibilities along with getting the

Loggers into their offense.

Emily was also tasked with de-

fending the opponent’s best offen-

sive player in nearly every contest.

She scored a game high 23 points

in the Loggers district semi-final

loss to Ellsworth.

Kristen Matelski, a senior in her

fifth year on the varsity, was the in-

side force that Boyne Falls used to

open up their outside game. Kris-

ten averaged 13.6 points and 11 re-

bounds per game this season. She

shot 56 percent from the charity

stripe and hit a game clinching

triple against Northern Lakes Con-

ference unbeaten rival Mackinaw

City on January 11.

The hard working Rayders of

Charlevoix: Kelsey Way along with

Sydney Carlson and Jenna Way,

bring a blue collar work ethic to

the squad.

Senior Kelsey Way, was the Ray-

ders go to player in the post the en-

tire season. One of the few that

would put her body on the line

nightly and do the “dirty work”

that post play requires. Many

nights, standing at 5’7”, she gave

up the height advantage, but

played with a workmen like atti-

tude and according to coach Leslie

Hoffman, gave her all with heart

and hustle, noting that there

wasn’t much that could rattle her.

Kelsey, a team captain that led by

example on and off the court, aver-

aged 10 points and seven boards

per game for Charlevoix.

Jenna Way, a senior, made the

Rayders go with her game chang-

ing capability. A versatile player

that mainly ran the point position,

Jenna worked hard wherever

coach Hoffman needed her to play

and carried the team when needed.

This was very noticeable in the dis-

trict final against Elk Rapids as

she kept the Rayders in the game,

hitting big shot after big shot scor-

ing 25 points in the contest.

Jenna’s athletic ability and work

ethic put her among the elite

guards in the Lake Michigan Con-

ference, her combination of speed,

talent and a shooters touch helped

her average 12 points and three as-

sists per game for the Rayders.

Charlevoix junior, Sydney Carl-

son has been a go-to guard for the

Rayders for the past two seasons.

She battled through injury the end

of last season and mid-way

through this season, but was deter-

mined to finish strong, and finish

strong she did.

Carlson, played both guard posi-

tions for the Rayders, and came up

clutch in the district tournament,

torching East Jordan for a career

high 22 points, including six three

pointers in the Charlevoix victory.

A co-captain for the Rayders,

Sydney led by example with her

dedication and leadership ability.

She averaged six points and three

assists per game.

Ellsworth seniors Emily Veen-

stra and Dana Neumann helped

lead the Lancers to a co-champi-

onship in the Northern Lakes Con-

ference and their first district title

since 2006.

The inside presence of Veenstra,

6’2”, and Neumann 5’10”, kept op-

ponents out of the lane on a regu-

lar basis, and there weren’t many

nights that the Lancers were out

rebounded.

Veenstra led Ellsworth with 15.4

points per game, 11.3 rebounds

dished out 67 assists, made 73

blocks, 54 steals and shot 50 per-

cent from the charity stripe. Emily

also recorded a pair of triple dou-

bles during the season.

Neumann was the leading re-

bounder for the Lancers, grabbing

11.7 per game, and made it a point

to score when needed as she fin-

ished the year with a 10.4 per game

average, including 18 against Bel-

laire in the district final and an-

other 18 against McBain NMC in

the regional semifinal loss. Dana

also had 20 assists, 24 steals and

nine blocks on the year.

Coach of the Year, Steve Hines

enjoyed a stellar season for the Red

Devils. East Jordan finished with a

13-8 record, including 8-6 in the

very tough Lake Michigan Confer-

ence, good enough for third place

behind powers Traverse City St.

Francis and Kalkaska, which were

a combined 39-7. The veteran coach

mixed his line-ups well each and

every night and had the Lady Dev-

ils playing ball at their best.

Hines helped East Jordan put to-

gether a five game win streak from

the end of December through mid-

January, and another four game

streak the end of January through

into the second week of February,

with seven of those nine wins com-

ing against conference opponents.

With a very solid returning cast

slated for next season’s team, look

for Hines to work his magic again

and lead the Red Devils towards

the Lake Michigan Conference

title.

March is Colorectal Awareness

Month and public health officials

are speaking out with advice for

consumers on this potentially life-

threatening disease. “Colorectal

cancer is the second leading cause

of cancer deaths in the United

States, with over 56,000 people ex-

pected to die from this disease

each year,” Joshua Meyerson, MD,

Medical Director for the Health

Department of Northwest Michi-

gan explained. “However, it is a

preventable and very curable dis-

ease if caught early.”

The Health Department offers

free home test kits for men and

women age 50 and over from

Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and

Otsego counties who meet certain

income guidelines.

Because there are often no

symptoms when it is first develop-

ing, colorectal cancer can only be

caught early through regular

screening. “The benefits of early

detection and treatment are dra-

matic,” Meyerson said. “The pos-

sibility of curing patients after

symptoms develop is only 50%,

but if colorectal cancer is found

and treated at an early stage be-

fore symptoms develop, the oppor-

tunity to cure it is 80% or better.”

Meyerson notes that in addi-

tion to getting screened regularly

for colorectal cancer, people can

lower their risk of getting the dis-

ease by:

Avoiding red meat and bacon

Eating plenty of vegetables,

fruits, and other high-fiber foods

Exercising regularly and main-

taining a normal body weight

Not smoking and drinking alco-

hol only in moderation

The Health Department is offer-

ing free test kits to eligible indi-

viduals ages 50- 64. For more in-

formation or to receive your free

test kit call 1-800-432-4121.

The Health Department of

Northwest Michigan is mandated

by the Michigan Public Health

Code to promote wellness, prevent

disease, provide quality health-

care, address health problems of

vulnerable populations, and pro-

tect the environment for the resi-

dents and visitors of Antrim,

Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego

counties.

Question:

I have had a week now of chest con-

gestion following a head cold and yester-

day it got very bad. I cough all the time.

It’s unproductive, and my chest hurts

like crazy. I can’t afford to go to the doc-

tor and cold medicines don’t provide re-

lief but make me tired.

Do you have any ideas either home-

made or OTC? I was thinking of Vicks®

VapoRub. My mom used that on me

when I was very little. I shower a lot be-

cause the hot water makes me feel bet-

ter, but after awhile, it tightens up and I

feel terrible again.

Michelle

Answers from Readers:

Natural Cough Syrup

To make your own cough syrup, bring

two cups of water to a boil. Stir in two

sliced lemons, half a teaspoon ground

ginger, two tablespoons of honey and

two tablespoons of sugar. Bring to a boil

and reduce heat to a simmer until the

mixture becomes a thick syrup. Let mix-

ture cool and then strain into a clean jar.

For adults only, you may add one ounce

of liqueur, brandy, or whiskey. Take one

to two teaspoons as needed for coughing.

Barbara

Hot Liquids Reduce Congestion

When you are congested, try drinking

hot liquids every hour. Peppermint tea,

herb tea, and broth will all work. Even

warm water will work. This will help

thin the mucus in your lungs. Also, take

an expectorant like Mucinex® to loosen

the congestion and bring it up so that

you can spit it out.

I also suggest having someone “clap”

your back by cupping his/her hands and

hitting your back. This technique is

used for cystic fibrosis patients and it

really loosens up congestion.

Gail

Steam a Natural Congestion Remedies

If hot showers help Michelle’s conges-

tion, but the effects don’t last as long as

she’d like, try filling the bathroom sink

(or a bowl) with very hot water. Then

put a towel over her head and bowl or

sink to keep the steam in, adding an

herbal tea bag or a drop or two of essen-

tial oil if desired. Breathe in the steam

for a few minutes until you feel it work-

ing.

It’s a time and water-saver over con-

stant showering, so you can do it more

often. Plus, it does double-duty as a good

facial sauna, too!

Diva

When Should You See Your Doc-

tor?

The “cold” may have progressed to

pneumonia. You should really go to the

doctor.

Drink plenty of fluids to liquefy your

secretions. Rubbing in a warm chest

salve such as Vicks® VapoRub is sooth-

ing, may reduce coughing, and stimu-

lates the blood flow in the chest, which

lets the body’s white cells work better in

helping heal the body. The “tightness”

you describe may be asthma; again you

should see your doctor. Over-the-counter

intervention will not be sufficient at this

point.

Postural drainage may help. Hang

your head and chest off the side of the

bed (bending at the waist), take some

deep breaths, and do some deep coughing

to help clear your lungs (about 5-10 min-

utes). Run a humidifier in your bedroom.

Lana

On the Feet?

This is something I heard about. It re-

portedly works 100% of the time, and it

won’t cost anything to try because she

already has the Vicks®.

At bedtime, rub Vicks® VapoRub gen-

erously on the bottoms of your feet and

put on a pair of old socks. It reportedly

stops the cough, no matter how persist-

ent, in about 5 minutes and lasts for

hours and hours.

Linda

Clear your lungs the natural way; Natural Congestion RemediesGet to Your Doctor

If your chest “hurts like

crazy,” you need to get to the

doctor pretty soon before you

end up in the hospital with an

even larger medical bill than

just going to the doctor. Once

your chest starts to burn and/or

hurt, you are past the point of

home remedies and need profes-

sional medical attention. I’ve

been there, just like you, and

this is the lesson I have learned.

Work with your doctor, and I’m

sure you can arrange a payment

plan or even a reduced bill. Most

doctors are “doctoring” because

they want to help people get bet-

ter, not cause you heartache

with the bill. But, make sure you

talk with the doctor directly;

don’t try to work anything out

with the reception personnel.

Natural Honey Remedy

Manuka honey can cure al-

most any cough. Manuka Honey

is now used as treatment in the

DC burn hospital because it has

very strong anti-viral, anti-bac-

terial and anti-inflammatory ac-

tions. About 1/3 of a teaspoon

should be allowed to dissolve

slowly in the back of the mouth.

Also, spread thinly on a piece of

toast. It is gaining use as a cure

for ulcers for same reason it

cures coughs. Do not give honey

to infants.

If you have a bacterial infec-

tion in the nose/sinuses, coat

the inside of your nose with an

anti-bacterial Neosporin. A few

treatments and you may be

cured almost permanently.

I and other members of my

family had chronic cough prob-

lems for since one can remem-

ber. Now they are stopped

within minutes using Manuka

honey.

I had painful sinuses and

stuffy nose for years and the

Neosporin treatment has made

it a thing of the past.

Locally grown bee pollen can

help with allergies. It must be lo-

cally grown and try a small

amount first to see if you are al-

lergic to it. If not, a teaspoon a

day is wonderful.

John

Essential Oil Reduces Con-

gestion

Place a few drops of eucalyp-

tus oil and peppermint oil in a

tablespoon of olive or grape

seed oil and rub under the nose,

on the throat, and on the chest.

You can also drop a few drops

onto a washcloth or sponge and

leave it in the bottom of the

shower when you take a shower.

The vapor will help decongest.

Viola

Use a Heating Pad

Use a heating pad on your

chest. It will help soothe the

cough and congestion in your

chest and draw it out.

Karen

Three Step Approach to

Natural Congestion Remedies

Here are three things I have

used for years and they really

seem to help. Put a heating pad

on your chest. This can be any

kind of heating Pad, including

electric (least recommended),

hot water bottle, or one of the

newer microwavable pads (see

below for directions on how to

make your own). Put it on over a

layer of clothing (to prevent any

possible burns). Make sure you

follow any heating pad instruc-

tions.

The next thing I use is a mix-

ture of lemon juice and honey.

In my opinion, it is best to use

fresh lemon juice and raw

honey. But I’ve also used bottled

lemon juice and processed

honey with fine results. Starting

with about a tablespoon of

honey, add as much lemon as

you can stand for sourness, but

where the honey is still thick

enough to be a bit clingy. Mix

well and then eat a spoonful of

it. If your throat is sore, let this

slide down your throat as much

as possible. It may tingle a bit,

but that’s fine. Repeat as often as

you need to for coughing. This

old cure is becoming popular

again because, except for a few

extra calories, there are no neg-

ative side effects to it, as there

can be with pharmaceuticals.

Also, the ingredients can be kept

on hand, and it can be very ef-

fective.

Lastly, I usea Neti pot. This is

for nasal irrigation, which

many people don’t want to think

about or try. It isn’t the most

pleasant thing at first, but it can

be so effective that I have turned

many people into believers. I

even have a “travel pot,” so that

I don’t break my good one. Nasal

irrigation systems can be

bought at the drugstore, al-

though I prefer my porcelain

Neti pot (it’s very effective and

once bought it’s virtually free to

use).

Basically, nasal irrigation

helps to clean out clogged si-

nuses. A saline solution is put

into one nostril, then comes out

the other. I admit it was a bit dis-

gusting at first, but I got over

that pretty quickly. I used to

have chronic sinus infections,

and I haven’t had a single one

since I started the Neti pot 10

years ago. Nasal irrigation is a

big enough topic that I suggest

you look at it on the web for

more details, or talk to your

pharmacist.

To make a rice pad, decide on

how big you want it (mine is

about 1.5 feet by 2 feet), and

make a bag that size (shaped as

you might a pillow case). Make

sure you use cotton, since syn-

thetics can melt. Then sew chan-

nels in the bag from bottom to

top, about 1.5 inches wide. Put a

few tablespoons of uncooked

rice in each channel and then

sew across to seal the rice in.

Add another few tablespoons of

rice, and sew across. Repeat

until the bag is all filled with

rice. It will have a kind of

quilted look when finished. To

use, put it in the microwave and

heat as desired. It can get very

hot, and more so in some spots

than others, so use with caution.

I used my pad for many years. It

started to tear at some of the

channel seams, so I am making

a new one. This time I am using

a slightly heavier cotton than

last time, and I bought new fab-

ric (last time I used scraps).

Question & Answers AboutSelling Real Estate

This is the hard-

est thing for most

people to do be-

cause they are

emotionally attached to every-

thing in the house. After years of

living in the same home, clutter

collects in such a way that may

not be evident to the homeowner.

However, it does affect the way

buyers see the home, even if you

do not realize it.

Clutter collects on shelves,

counter tops, drawers, closets,

garages, attics, and basements.

You want as much open clear

space as possible, so every extra

little thing needs to be cleared

away.

Take a step back and pretend

you are a buyer. Let a friend help

point out areas of clutter, as long

as you can accept their views

without getting defensive. Let

your agent help you, too.

Kitchen Clutter

The kitchen is a good place to

start removing clutter, because it

is an easy place to start.

First, get everything off the

counters. Everything. Even the

toaster. Put the toaster in a cabi-

net and take it out when you use

it. Find a place where you can

store everything in cabinets and

drawers. Of course, you may no-

tice that you do not have cabinet

space to put everything. Clean

them out. The dishes, pots and

pans that rarely get used? Put

them in a box and put that box in

storage.

You see, homebuyers will open

all your cabinets and drawers, es-

pecially in the kitchen. They want

to be sure there is enough room

for their “stuff.” If your kitchen

cabinets, pantries, and drawers

look jammed full, it sends a nega-

tive message to the buyer and does

not promote an image of plentiful

storage space. The best way to do

that is to have as much “empty

space” as possible.

For that reason, if you have a

“junk drawer,” get rid of the junk.

If you have a rarely used crock

pot, put it in storage. Do this with

every cabinet and drawer. Create

open space.

If you have a large amount of

foodstuffs crammed into the

shelves or pantry, begin using

them – especially canned goods.

Canned goods are heavy and you

don’t want to be lugging them to a

new house, anyway – or paying a

mover to do so. Let what you have

on the shelves determine your

menus and use up as much as you

can.

Beneath the sink is very criti-

cal, too. Make sure the area be-

neath the sink is as empty as

possible, removing all extra clean-

ing supplies. You should scrub the

area down as well, and determine

if there are any tell-tale signs of

water leaks that may cause a

homebuyer to hesitate in buying

your home.
