Rayder Gridiron Club Invests inTrack & Field ImprovementsLeading to a Potential AudioVideo Arts Program forCharlevoix Schools

Charlevoix - The Rayder

Gridiron Club has recently

made a commitment to pur-

chase a new scoreboard and

video/sound system for the

Charlevoix Track and Foot-

ball field. The investment is

substantial, totaling nearly

$130,000 for the board,

video/sound system, and in-

stallation.

The Rayder Gridiron Club

will raise money to offset the

cost of the purchase and

maintenance of the new

equipment by selling score-

board advertisements, organ-

izing fundraising events, and

seeking financial donations.

The cost of the board and

sound system, including

maintenance, will be the com-

plete responsibility of the

Rayder Gridiron Club and

will not require any financial

support from the schools.

Because the scoreboard will

require audio visual training

to operate, the Charlevoix

Schools have agreed to build

off of their already existing

speech and broadcasting

classes to develop an AVA club

or program. This will involve

students assisting in the de-

velopment of broadcasting

materials, as well as the oper-

ation of the board. They are

excited about the opportunity

for their students to learn

valuable technical-broadcast-

ing skills. Dr. Gilbert Noirot,

Rayder Gridiron Club Mem-

ber, stated “This project will

benefit all of our student body

- not just those who play

sports. It has the potential of

promoting involvement, en-

thusiasm, and a feeling of

pride in our schools and com-

munity. Bottom line - this is a

great investment because we

are investing in all of our kids

with this project. What better

investment could we make?”

The investment in new

equipment will also make

hosting community events at

the track and field facility

more attractive and will help

promote the pride that the

community has in the

Charlevoix Public School Sys-

tem.

their first two contests of the

day to Utica Eisenhower and

Flint Powers, both by scores

of 3-0.

Against Eisenhower, jun-

ior keeper, Gloria Greene

another 16 against Powers.

“Both Eisenhower and

Flint Powers were extremely

talented, fast paced, passing

teams,” Rayder coach Pete

Scholten said. “They were

able to work beautiful combi-

nations around our players.

It’s a great experience for us

to play talented teams like

these. We learn a lot from

these games.”

In their third game of the

afternoon, Charlevoix met up

with LMC rival, Harbor

Springs where they would

down the Rams 2-0 behind a

goal from senior forward,

Charlevoix stands at 6-3

CHARLEVOIX— The host

minutes in on a sophomore

forward Kelsey Engstrom

goal as she took a pass from

junior midfielder Elizabeth

Way.

The Rayders added an-

other first half goal on Katie

Kiteley goal, assisted by mid-

fielder Leah Davis.

Harbor Springs would re-

spond from the 2-0 halftime

deficit, as Elena Esposito

found the back of the net for

the Rams, cutting the lead in

half, but Charlevoix would

have an answer of their own

as Davis connected for an-

other Rayder goal on a Kite-

ley assist to push the lead to

3-1.

The Rams would have the

final tally of the contest as

Sadie Cwickel scored to

make it 3-2 Rayders.

“Our defense played a

huge role tonight.,”

Charlevoix coach Pete

Scholten said “Olivia Storm

and Leah Davis played a

Charlevoix 19-14,

tC Christian 5-6

TRAVERSE CITY — The

Charlevoix baseball team

picked up another pair of vic-

tories as they rolled past TC

Christian 19-5 and 14-6 in a

non-conference doubleheader

on April 28.

“After getting swept on Sat-

urday it was nice to get two

wins, going into a tough week

in the league. I was very

happy with the way we ran the

bases,” Charlevoix coach Allen

Telgenhof said. “We had a ton

of steals and caught them not

paying attention quite a few

times.”

In the opener the Rayder

used an 11 run first inning to

set the tone and improve to 10-4

overall.

J.J. Bottomley earned the

win, allowing four hits, three

earned runs, while striking

out six and walking 10.

At the plate, Luke Klinger

and Logan Eckhardt finished

with two hits each, both dou-

bling, while Hunter Cox,

Spencer Stewart, Nate Moon,

Andrew Michaud, Devin

Largent and Austin Putman all

singled.

In game two the Charlevoix

offense was led by Putman

with two hits, including a

home run a double, while

Largent added a pair of hits.

Moon, Bottomley, Michaud

and Cox all added one hit each,

with Moon’s being a double.

Eckhardt earned the pitch-

ing win, going four innings, al-

lowing one earned run on

three hits, walked three and

fanned two. Moon pitched an

inning of relief, allowing two

hits and striking out three.

“We had a couple guys leave

due to ankle injuries, Luke

Klinger and J.J. Bottomley, but

our bench really played well

with Spencer Stewart getting a

two-run single, Devin Largent

continuing to stay hot and An-

drew Michaud hitting well in

the clutch.”

Charlevoix 4-6, Gladstone 8-9

CHARLEVOIX — The host

Rayders fell to Gladstone 8-4

and 9-6 in a pair of non-confer-

ence baseball games on April

26 at the Charlevoix Township

Shanahan field.

In game one, following a 1-1

first inning, Gladstone scored

four times in the top of the

third before the Rayders re-

sponded with a three run fifth

to pull to within 5-4. Gladstone

then added three more in the

top of the seventh to seal the

win.

“It was a weird day for us,

playing on the junior league

field at Charlevoix Township,”

Rayder coach Allen Telgenhof

said. “It’s 250 down the lines

and 300 to dead center. Glad-

stone hit three three-run

homers that would have been

flyouts on our field to account

for more than half of their

runs. Still give them credit, we

could’ve done the same thing.

I thought our sophomores (Cox

and Putman) threw well but

Gladstone is a good team. I

won’t be surprised if they

make it to the regionals this

year.”

Noah Certa paced the

Charlevoix offense with a pair

of doubles, Will Telgenhof

shad an RBI single and Austin

Putman added a single.

Hunter Cox took the pitch-

ing loss for the Rayders.

In game two, Gladstone

again got on the board early,

scoring eight times in the first

two innings, before having to

hold off a valiant Rayder

comeback that came up just

shy.

Putman had a big game at

the plate, going 4-for-4 with a

double and four RBIs, while

J.J. Bottomley doubled and

Shane Sutherland and Will Tel-

genhof singled.

“We got the tying run to the

plate in the seventh, but could-

n’t get them home,” the coach

added.

Putman took the loss on the

mound for Charlevoix.

in the bottom of the sixth, 5-4.

Dustin Hejka took the loss

for EJ, tossing three innings of

relief of starter Colin Petrie

who left the game earlier due

to elbow discomfort. The pair

combined to strike out four.

At the plate, Hejka finished

with two hits, while Tucker Al-

ward doubled in a pair of Red

Devil runs. Herschell Sutton

and Oscar Scheier both added

a single with Sutton picking

up an RBI.

In the nightcap, East Jordan

was limited to one hit, a sec-

ond inning single by Hejka.

On the mound, juniors,

Noah Raymond and Alward

pitched for the Red Devils.

“The first game loss in the

bottom of the sixth really de-

flated the boys and sure

charged up the Blazers leading

to the whooping we got in the

nightcap,” Red Devils coach

Tom Reid Jr. said. “The boys

need to have a very short mem-

ory and forget about this set of

games as we have three nights

of baseball each of the next

two weeks.”

East Jordan is 3-6-1 overall.

TRAVERSE CITY — The Red

Devil baseball team battled to

a non-conference split with

Traverse City Central on April

24, winning the opener 2-1 be-

fore falling 10-8 in game two.

In game one, a Dustin Hejka

steal of third turned into a

Trojan throwing error that

saw Hejka come around to

score the eventual winning

run.

EJ got on top first as Jordan

Peterson scored on a third in-

ning base hit by Tim Schut.

Hejka picked up the win for

the Red Devils, going the dis-

tance, allowing one unearned

run on four hits, walking three

and fanning one.

Noah Raymond had the

other EJ hit.

“This was an excellent team

win, and I stress team win!”

East Jordan coach Tom Reid

Jr. said. “The boys communi-

cated very well on the field and

gritted though a couple in-

nings where there were bases

either full or two guys on and

came out with good defensive

plays to end innings.”

“Hejka also pitched a heck of

a game tonight,” the coach

added. “Definitely a nice

bounce back after losing two to

Charlevoix Tuesday.”

Game two saw TC Central

take control early, jumping out

to an 8-0 lead through four in-

nings, but that’s when the Red

Devils decided to make a come-

back, crossing the plate three

times in the fifth.

Central responded with a

pair in the bottom half of the

inning and then had to hold off

another EJ burst as the Red

Devils scored five times in the

top of the sixth before the Tro-

jans were able to close the

door.

“The boys showed a lot of

heart coming back in game

two,” coach Reid said. “We

came out very sluggish and

ended up battling to the end.

I’m very proud of the effort

they put in tonight!”

Schut went 3-for-4 in the

game with four RBIs, while

Tucker Alward added a single.

The Red Devils showed pa-

tience at the plate, drawing

eight walks, and once on the

basepath, they swiped eight

bases.

Oscar Scheier and Herschell

Sutton combined on the

mound for the Red Devils to

allow 11 hits, walk four and

strike out one.

CENTRAL LAKE — With the

Ellsworth softball fields being unable

to host any contests this spring, Cen-

tral Lake Public School has been kind

enough to allow the Lancers to use

their facilities when available.

The Lady Lancers took a pair of

Northern Lakes Conference softball

games from Wolverine, 12-2 and 15-0.

In game one, Shantel Potter and

Ashley Drenth each finished with two

hits, while Hannah Heard doubled and

Maddie Steenwyk, Amanda Veenstra,

Katelyn Sowers and Katie Lambert all

singled.

Drenth picked up the pitching win,

fanning one in the process.

In the nightcap, Drenth once again

earned the pitching win in the circle,

striking out four in the shutout vic-

tory.

Veenstra led the offense with two

hits, while Heard and Drenth both

doubled.

“We have had a couple of outdoor

practices finally and have been able to

start working on all the different cov-

erages and the team has been steadily

improving on all three nights that we

have had games,” coach Linda Steen-

wins of the season, but the girls are

learning their lessons from the first

four losses of the season and really

working hard in practice to fix the er-

Automotive Review

The popular automotive web-

site Edmunds.com has named

five Chrysler Group vehicles as

award winners. The 2014 Ram

1500 full-size and 2500 heavy-duty

pickups were named “Top Rated

Vehicles on Edmunds.com” dur-

ing the 2014 New York Interna-

tional Auto Show press days.

Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge

Grand Caravan, the most

awarded SUV and minivan ever,

were listed as the “2014 Most Pop-

ular on Edmunds.com” vehicles

in the Midsize Traditional SUV

and Minivan categories, respec-

tively. Dodge Durango was

named most popular in the Large

Traditional SUV category.

“Ram pickups earn our top rat-

ing on the strength of their excel-

lent chassis and thoughtfully

designed cabs,” said Scott Old-

ham, Editor in Chief of Ed-

munds.com. “The Jeep Grand

Cherokee, Dodge Durango and

Dodge Grand Caravan have no

shortage of utility and capability,

two very important characteris-

tics that continue to attract cus-

tomers.”

“Chrysler Group is very proud

to accept these awards from Ed-

munds.com,” said Doug Betts,

Head of Quality for Fiat S.p.A.

and Chrysler Group LLC. “The

men and women at Chrysler

work very hard to create the best

vehicles on the market today, and

every award received is proof

that we are succeeding.”

Ram 1500 – the most recogniza-

ble pickup on the road – delivers

18 miles per gallon (mpg) city

and 25 mpg highway with a

truckload of pioneering, fuel-sav-

ing systems including a fuel effi-

cient and powerful 3.6-liter V-6

engine and first-in-segment tech-

nologies: TorqueFlite eight-speed

automatic transmission, stop-

start system, thermal manage-

ment system, pulse-width

modulation and active aerody-

namics, including grille shutters

and air suspension. For 2014, the

Ram 1500 offers a new, 3.0-liter

EcoDiesel engine that delivers an

outstanding combination of best-

in-class fuel efficiency 28 mpg –

unsurpassed torque and up to

9,200 lbs. of towing capability.

Ram 2500 - The 2014 Ram 2500

adds new powertrain, suspension

and innovative features that de-

liver the most powerful, capable

and comfortable heavy-duty

truck in the segment. Ram’s

Heavy Duty line offers an all-new

6.4-liter HEMI V-8 with best-in-

class (gas engine) 410 horsepower

and 429 lb.-ft. of torque, a 5.7-liter

HEMI V-8 and the renowned 6.7-

liter Cummins Turbo Diesel I-6,

cranking out 370 horsepower and

best-in-class (diesel engine) 800

lb.-ft. of torque. An all-new five-

link coil rear suspension system,

with an available exclusive rear

air suspension, allows for best-in-

class ride and handling. The two

robust options meld with a new

front suspension to handle the

best-in-class 17,970 lb. towing ca-

pacity. Innovative features such

as a cargo bed camera, 5th

wheel/gooseneck trailer prep

package and the popular Ucon-

nect system come together to

offer customers the best ¾-ton

truck in the segment.

Jeep Grand Cherokee com-

pletely redefines the premium

SUV, delivering an unprece-

dented combination of best-in-

class fuel economy and driving

range, available clean-diesel tech-

nology, legendary benchmark ca-

pability, world-class

craftsmanship, and a host of ad-

vanced user-friendly technology

and safety features. For 2014,

Grand Cherokee offers a new

EcoDiesel engine with best-in-

class 30 mpg highway and an un-

matched driving range of more

than 730 miles.  A new eight-

speed transmission drives all

Grand Cherokee engines, includ-

ing the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 –

achieving up to 25 mpg and more

than 600 miles driving range –

and the 5.7-liter V-8, now achiev-

ing up to 22 mpg.

Dodge Durango - The new 2014

Dodge Durango takes everything

that customers love about Du-

rango and adds the latest ad-

vancements in technology to

enhance its design, capability

and functionality. With a new

standard eight-speed automatic

transmission that improves fuel

economy up to 15 percent with

the available HEMI V-8 engine

and delivers up to 25 mpg with

the standard Pentastar V-6 en-

gine, new LED exterior lighting

and the Dodge brand’s signature

racetrack taillamps, new avail-

able 8.4-inch Uconnect Touch-

screen, a new customizable TFT

gauge cluster and an available

high-definition dual-screen Blu-

ray entertainment system, the

2014 Dodge Durango reaches

even higher levels of sophistica-

tion building on its proven per-

formance, utility and comfort.

Dodge Grand Caravan, Amer-

ica’s most affordable minivan, is

celebrating its 30th birthday in

2014 with special 30th Anniver-

sary models and unique content.

The Grand Caravan offers indus-

try-exclusive Super Stow ‘n Go

penalty at the gas pump, getting

up to 25 mpg. The Grand Caravan

safety and security features and

is an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

a date to forward or terminate serv-

ice. Start looking for licensed and

professional moving companies,

moving guides and relevant coupons.

Tip: If you’re using a professional

mover, get quotes from multiple mov-

ing companies to get the best deal

that is right for you and your needs.

Ask plenty of questions, like

whether or not they give binding

quotes and what kind of insurance is

included. Be sure to talk with them

about the different options available

with full-service moves such as pack-

ing and unpacking services and pro-

viding boxes and packing supplies.

Tip: Important documents such as

your child’s school records may need

to be accessible during your transi-

tion. Make sure to put these items

aside and make copies of any records

for yourself, in case you forget what

box they’re packed in.

Tip: Use the post office address

changer service to save time and to

ensure you’ve covered all the ground

necessary to better ensure your move

is seamless. Fill out change of ad-

dress forms for creditors, doctors

and personal providers. Schedule ac-

count closings for trash removal, gar-

deners, pest control, etc., and

transfer utilities or other services

that’ll go with you.
