    Field.

    Winners of six straight, the

    Ramblers upped their season

record to 6-1 overall, 4-0 Lake

    Michigan Conference, while the

    Rayders dropped their sixth

straight contest to slip to 1-6, 0-4.The Ramblers struck first as

    they marched 70 yards downfield

    with Corey Redman calling his

own number just under two min-

utes into the contest and rolling

out to the right and sprinting to

the end zone for a 25 yard scoreand a 6-0 Rambler lead as the

    point after attempt was blocked

by the Rayders.Boynes Max Cuper would then

    recover a Rayder fumble on

    Charlevoixs next possession but

were unable to punch it in as

    Redman was sacked on fourth

and three from the 17-yard line,

    firing up the Rayder faithful.

    The Rayders would then go

four and out, but following theirpunt the Charlevoix defense

    would hold strong again stopping

Boyne on fourth down and taking

over on downs at the Rayder 10-

    yard line.

    Shane Sutherland and quarter-

    back Luke Klinger would then

try and give Charlevoix somebreathing room but both werestuffed at the line of scrimmage

on second and third down as the

    Rambler defense sniffed out both

    plays.

On third and 10, Klinger went

to the air and found a streaking

    Will Telgenhof down the right

    sideline for a 90-yard touchdown

pass and following a successfulpoint after attempt; it was

as their defense recovered a fum-ble on the Rayders first play of

the quarter, and then following a

Luke Sage touchdown run forBoyne; the Redman to Maceo Vro-

man connection took off, result-ing in three touchdown

    27 unanswered points for a 33-7

halftime advantage. The third quarter would see

Charlevoix try to claw back in asSam Hovie pounded his way in

extra-point kick it was 33-14 Ram-

blers.Boyne would tack on their final

two scores of the evening thefourth quarter as Redman found

a wide-open Cole Butler down the

    right sideline as the tight-end

took it in from 42-yards out afterregaining his balance after

stretching out for the ball.Sage would add another Ram-

    DNR stressestree stand

safetyTake precautions whenhunting deer from tree

    stand or elevated platorm

    As hunters head to the

woods for the archery deerseason, Michigan conserva-

tion officers are stressingsafety for those hunting from

    tree stands or elevated plat-forms.

    Tree stands are popular

with many hunters who wantan increased advantage, but

improper use of them can re-

sult in injuries and death, said Sgt. Tom Wanless,Hunter Education Program

    supervisor for the Michigan

Department of Natural Re-sources. We always stress

safety when using a treestand or raised platform.

The important things to re-member when using a tree

stand for hunting are:* Buy a safe and comfort-

    able stand and harness thats

right for you. Safe and reli-able equipment reduces your

chance of injury.* Carefully read all instruc-

tions and warnings providedwith your stand.

    * Practice setting up your

stand and safety equipmentat ground level first. Use all

recommended safety strapsand pins to secure the stand.

    * Wear the safety harnessat all times when climbing,

    hunting and descending.

    * Choose a harness with aquick-release system that

will hold you right-side-upand not restrict your breath-

ing should you fall.* Maintain your equipment

    look for wear, stress points

and loose fasteners. Fix or re-place worn equipment imme-

diately.* Choose as straight a tree

as possible, and watch fordead, overhanging limbs and

    rotten wood.

    * Use extra care whenhunting from a smooth-

barked tree (such as aspen, maple, hickory and beech)

because if it rains, they get

    slippery.* Use extra care when

    hunting from a frozen tree.

Avoid using elevated standswhen its icy.

    * Always use a haul rope tobring gear, firearm or bow to

and from the ground.* Always unload your gun

    before hauling.

    * If hauling a bow, tie yourline to the top limb of the

bow when climbing and thebottom when descending to

    avoid snagging arrows intree branches.

    * Be extra alert when

climbing or descending fromthe stand. These are when

    most tree-stand accidentsoccur.

For more information onhunting regulations and safe

    use of equipment, check

    the 2013 hunting digests.

    DNR FishingTipTips for taking crappie

    in the fall

Crappies often stay indeeper water and tend to

    move around more as they

target schools of baitfishThis time of year can bring

some of the best resultswhen it comes to fishing for

crappie. Want to target thesepanfish when you head out in

    the coming days or weeks?

These fish often stay indeeper water longer than

other panfish and they alsotend to move around more as

they target large schools ofbaitfish. If you use baits that

    imitate a crappies food of

choice youll be more likelyto find them.

Keep in mind that crappieswill get less and less active as

the water cools off and theyslow down. Youll then want

    to slow your presentation

and offer smaller baits tokeep seeing success.

Try your luck at somegreat crappie fishing this fall.

ALMA In a season of ups

    and downs, the hardworking East

Jordan Red Devils got back on thewinning track after dropping

    their previous three straight con-tests with a 42-30 non-conference

victory over Marion at Alma Col-lege on October 11.

The win pushed the Red Devils

back over the .500 mark at 4-3overall.

(Marion) is a very good foot-ball team, East Jordan coach

Allan Peterson said. I cant be-

lieve this team has only won onefootball game. We wore them

down, they only had 15 playersand we just wore them

down. Our kids never stoppedplaying hard and we outscored

    them.

East Jordan got on the boardfirst as Dustin Hejka found Wyatt

Crick for a 25-yard touchdownwith 9:18 to go in the opening

quarter. It took Marion only three plays

and less than two minutes later to

respond as they went to the air aswell with quarterback Tyrel Hall

finding Ethan Russell for a 65-yard scoring strike and with the

    conversion, Marion took a 8-6

    lead.

    Following turnovers by both

squads, the later an interceptionby EJs Jaden Hoffman at the

Marion 25 yard line; the Red Dev-ils bounced right back, as Hejka

scrambled in from five yards outto put East Jordan back on top 12-

8 with 4:55 left in the first quar-

    ter as the conversion attemptfailed.

After the Red Devil kickoff,Marion marched 65 yards for an-

other score, highlighted by a 45-yard pass completion from Hall to

Brad Fall, giving Marion a 14-12

lead as the point after attemptwas no good.

East Jordan added another pairof scores in the second quarter,

as Hejka and Ben Walton bothfound the endzone from about

three yards out for the Red Devil

touchdowns, while Marion wasable to claw their way in for eight

second quarter points. The Red Devils took a 26-22 lead

into the half.We had some very good play

    from our offensive line with

Oscar Scheier and Weston Swan-son as well as Jaden Hoffman and

Nick Holt, coach Petersonadded. Tim Schut and Noah Bac-

chus ran very hard and Ben Wal-ton was super tough inside.

Marion went back on top in just

    under halfway through the third

quarter 30-26, but that would be

the last time Eagles would holdthe lead.

Schut would find paydirt with3:44 left in the quarter as he rum-

bled in from 10 yards out, andadded the conversion run for a 34-

    30 East Jordan advantage.

He would then add a little morebreathing room late in the fourth

quarter for the Red Devils as hefound his way for another score

with just under two minutes re-maining in the game, tack on the

    conversion pass from Hejka to

Bacchus and the finally tally ofthe night, 42-30 EJ.

I am very proud of this bunch;they will always work hard and

never quit, Peterson noted.Bacchus rushed for 103 yards

on 14 carries to lead the Red Devil

ground game, while Waltonadded 98 yards on 11 rush at-

tempts and Schut carried 11times for 69 yards.

Hejka finished 3-of-8 passingfor 45 yards and picked up 31

    yards rushing.

    Part 1 of 2

    Home shopping for first-

    time homebuyers its an ex-

    citing, albeit

    nerve-wracking, experience.

If youre like others in the

    market for their first home,

    you probably have in mind

    exactly how your soon-to-be

    home will look.

    But its important not to

    fall into the bad decorating,

dingy walls and dirt-bareback yard equals bad-home

trap. If you dont see past the

    hideous wallpaper, funky

    light fixtures and avocado

    green carpeting, you may

miss out on a home with

    great potential.

    And, if youre looking for

a home in a sellers market

    where homes are being

snatched up as soon as they

    go on the market, youll

come to realize you cant be

choosy if you want to make a

    competitive offer.

One of the first things to

do is to get pre-approved for

    a loan and determine the

    maximum you can afford to

offer for a house. Dont look

at homes that are asking formore than 5 percent above

    your maximum, otherwise

    youll be setting yourself up

    for disappointment if you

    find the perfectbut outside

    your budgethome.

    So what to do?

The floor plan of the home

    is extremely important. If a

floor plan isnt quite to your

    liking, consider rearranging

it or adding on. If youre

    looking at an existing home

and will need to remodel or

    expand to suit your needs,

    the estimated cost of renova-

    tion needs to be considered

    when making an offer.

    Also, consider the features

of a home:Walls. While these are

    among the easiest to remedy,

they also make a huge first

    impression. If the walls need

to be painted, are covered in

    wallpaper or are painted a

    color you find distasteful,

    picture them crisp and clean

in the color of your choice

    thats how they could look

    after you paint them.

    Floors. Like walls, carpet

or floor surfaces that are old

or outdated can be easily re-

    placed. You could even ask

    for a carpet allowance in

    your bid, especially if youre

    in a buyers market.

    View. Things like old,

    uglyeven dirtywindows

and window treatments canmake a view appear less de-

    sirable. Those things can be

    improved, so unless the only

view you have is of your

    neighbors clunker on the

side of the house, dont get

hung up on what is surely a

    fixable view.

    The 2014 Ford Taurus delivers

more of what large sedan cus-

tomers really want: fuel econ-omy, more technology, design

refinement, improved crafts-manship and enhanced driving

dynamics. A choice of enginesoffers customers increased fuel

    economy without compromisingthe responsive performance

    they want.

Taurus was the first car inFords North American lineup

to offer the advanced 2.0-literEcoBoost engine. Ideal for full-

size sedan buyers seeking maxi-mum fuel economy without

    sacrificing performance, this ad-

vanced engine combines directinjection of gasoline and a tur-

    bocharger to provide perform-

ance comparable to naturallyaspirated V6 engines offered by

    competitors. The 2.0-liter Eco-Boost delivers 240 horsepower

and 270 lb.-ft. of torque while re-turning highway fuel economy

of 32 mpg.A relatively high compression

ratio is enabled by the use of di-

rect injection of gasoline, oper-ating at fuel pressures from

2,200 to 2,800 psi. The uniqueturbocharger is optimally

matched to the 2.0-liter Eco-Boost engine and direct injec-

    tion system, providing precise

fuel pressure control to deliverboosted power at low rpm with-

out annoying turbo lag.The 2.0-liter EcoBoost uses

5W30 oil to reduce internal fric-tion, and enables 10,000-mile oil

    change intervals, representing a

potential reduction in cost ofownership. In addition, fuel

    economy is optimized with a

    low-tension accessory drive belt

    and a one-way alternator clutch.

The 3.5-liter V6 is offered asstandard equipment in Taurus

SE, SEL and Limited seriesmodels. This Taurus engine

benefits from the addition oftwin independent variable

camshaft timing, achieving bet-ter fuel economy, additional

    horsepower and a reduction in

part-throttle emissions com-pared to the previous standard

Taurus V6. The new engine re-turns a 3 mpg highway fuel

economy increase, with 10 per-cent more horsepower.

    The engine has been engi-

neered for durability withchain-driven camshafts, high-

    strength forged metal connect-

ing rods with floating pins, afully counterweighted forged

steel crankshaft, die-cast alu-minum deep-sump oil pan and

four-bolt main bearing capswith side bolts through the en-

gine block. Noise, vibration andharshness characteristics are

    controlled and reduced through

employment of a tuned compos-ite upper and lower manifold, a

silent-chain camshaft drive andan acoustic engine cover.

The EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 standard equipment in the high-

    performance Taurus SHO is

Fords most powerful EcoBoostoffering, delivering 365 horse-

power and 350 lb.-ft. of torque.Like all Ford EcoBoost engines,

this engine produces peaktorque across a broad plateau

from 1,500 to 5,250 rpm. Peak

torque building quickly off idleensures responsive acceleration.

From the drivers seat, the re-

    sult is linear power delivery.

    Combining direct injection

and a pair of turbochargers, theV6 EcoBoost engine avoids lag

by employing impellers thatspool up quickly for swift re-

sponse. This Taurus SHO combi-nation of power, consistent

torque delivery, all-wheel driveand up to 25 mpg on the high-

    way is unmatched by competi-

    tors.Americas most innovative
