From the Principal

Last week in Junior School Chapel I spoke to the students about the importance of Kindness. I used my puppets Oddie the Ostru and Kruger the Baboon to help show our youngest students that the remedy for bullying is kindness.

The Importance of Kindness

I’ve been teaching Junior School a very corny song over many years. It goes something like this (and you’re lucky you’re not hearing me sing it):

Be kind

Be kind

Be kind to one another

Be kind

Be kind

Be kind to one another

Do we want bullying?

NO WAY

Tell the bully to GO AWAY

‘Cause being kind is the only way

That Charlton will be safe.

They sang along with us and acted out the song.

To reinforce these ideas they learned in an interac-tive way about the Fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, pa-tience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

I helped them to understand if we had the fruit of God’s Spirit in our lives there would be no room for hurting others.

All in all it was a lot of fun and hopefully over time this teaching will become deeply embedded in their lives.

The Bible has other verses about kindness.

Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for God Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. Luke 6:35

So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of com-passion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honour. Romans 12:10

I can’t help but remember as I teach our students, that it isn’t just Junior School who need to hear about kindness and fruitfulness. All of our students should un-derstand and value these teachings as well.

Parents, you also need to set a good example to your children in the way you speak to your children and each other. Unkind words cannot be easily be taken back. Harsh words scar as easily as a physical cut. The way we speak ABOUT others is also worth remembering because your children are listening and learning from you about negative talk, gossip and slander.

The good thing is that they will also copy your kindness, your gentleness, your goodness, your faithfulness, your peacefulness, your patience, your joy and your

PRAYER POINTS • Praise God for a very successful Inspection and for

Open Day, last Friday. Pray that the many people who came will follow through with enrolments.

• Praise God for the safe return of the Duke of Edinburgh expedition squad.

• Continue to pray for staff who have been unwell, and for ongoing good health for our staff and students.

DO YOU HAVE A PRAYER REQUEST?Would you like someone to pray for you, your family or a friend?

Would you like someone to stand with you in faith to believe for a breakthrough?

Email our chaplain, Matt Stackhouse: [email protected] or phone (02) 4959 9111.

In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. .

Verse for the Week: Philippians 1:4-6

FROM THE CHAPLAINAs we continue the theme of integrity this term we look at a verse from Philippians in the New Testament. Here, Paul tells Christians in the city of Philippi (and all Christians) that God himself has begun to work on each person, the moment they put their trust in him and it will be completed. What is this work? It is the transforming of each of us to become more like him; in character and in action. This is a profound work because it requires each of us to go through refining so that we, in the end, become more whole, like him. We, as it were, are called to cooperate with him (obedience) as he does the work in us (faith). May we yield to God’s work in us so that we can point others to him.

self-control. There will be no bullying in a house-hold that builds on this foundation.

The biggest kindness of all was shown by Jesus Himself ;

3 There was a time when we were foolish and did not obey. We were fooled in many ways. Strong desires held us in their power. We wanted only to please our-selves. We wanted what others had and were angry when we could not have them. We hated others and they hated us.

4 But God, the One who saves, showed how kind He was and how He loved us 5 by saving us from the punishment of sin. It was not because we worked to be right with God. It was because of His loving-kindness that He washed our sins away. At the same time He gave us new life when the Holy Spirit came into our lives.

Titus 3:3-5 New Life Version

Do you need to make changes in your life or your family’s life? Your children are your “mini me’s” in more ways than you want to know.

Blessings and strength to you.

CSSA Girls State Soccer Gala Day

Team Chant:

On Monday 25th May, I went to Penrith to play soccer in an all girls

competition. We all had a great time! Mr Lalor and Mr Thornton took us. We

didn’t win any games but we tied two and lost one and we came 10th out

of 16 schools. Overall it was a great day. Our goalie was really good and so

were all of the other goalies.

I would like to thank the team for how well everyone cooperated as a team

and showed good sportmanship throughout the day. I would also like to

thank Mr Lalor and Mr Thornton for taking us and coaching us on the day.

National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. It promotes the value of reading and literacy. This initiative is now in its 15th successful year. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read by children all around the country (simultaneously), in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places. This year the book chosen to be read was The Brothers Quibble by Aaron Blabey.

Last year over 460,000 children at over 3,100 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime.

On Wednesday 27th May, our Junior School children and Pl@yschool friends enjoyed being a part of the National Simultaneous Storytime and doing associated activities.

On Wednesday the Masterclass Chef students experienced an educational visit to the Euro Patisserie at New Lambton. The students tasted tempting treats and were given an exclusive tour of the kitchens. The staff and management were an excellent example of hospitality and many customers commented on the commendable behaviour of the students.

Later the students journeyed to Blackbutt to en-joy a picnic lunch and a tour of the parklands to com-plete a scavenger hunt.

It is always such joy to see so many of our students enthusiasticly and willingly offering to help out where they can. A good example of this is what took place in Junior School last Thursday. Ross Clarke and I (from maintenance) were working to spread a large area of woodchip to tidy up in preparation for Open Day. We were approached by a couple of young boys to see if they could help. We found a couple of extra shovels and they happily started to help. Before long I was approached

by a few more students and then several more again. In fact, I soon found that we did not have enough shovels and rakes for the number of children who wanted to help. All this took place in their recess break and it was so nice to see so many kids working happily to help beautify their school in their own play time.

Enthusiasm, willingness to help others, doing it joyfully and having a healthy work ethic are valuable character traits which have been imparted by their families and their experiences at school. Such traits will only serve them well as they progress through school into careers and whatever life has in store for them. A big

“thumbs up” to the Junior School kids who gave us a hand and to all those students who are willing to help out to make their school and community a better place! Jon Charlton (Maintenance)

The Lions Youth of the Year Competition is held annually for young people between the ages of 15 and 19 years of age. It is a prestigious event for young people, which boasts many high profile Australians amongst the ranks of former entrants. These include: Kevin Rudd; Peter Beattie, a past premier of Queensland; the ABC’s Sabra Lane and Senator Simon Birmingham. Through entering the program, which is now in its 50th year, students have an unequalled opportunity to experience an interview situation – in a friendly atmosphere – and a chance to practise their public speaking skills. There are various levels ranging from local to regional, then state and national.

This year, Charlton Christian College was represented by Emily Charlton, our 2014 Vice-Captain. Emily won the LYOTY Award and the Public Speaking Award for Toronto Lions Club. Emily was a formidable entrant and went on to compete at further levels.

Recently, representatives from Toronto Lions and Lioness Clubs (Mrs Valma Talbot, Mrs Judith Steele, Mr John Steele and Mrs Claire Constable) attended our Senior School Assembly at Charlton to present trophies to Emily and also to Mrs Skuthorpe as the Principal of Charlton. It was wonderful for our College to be involved in this notable competition and we were very proud of Emily achieving such excellent results. She enjoyed the experience immensely and met some other very impressive young men and women as part of her involvement in the competition.

Congratulations Emily and congratulations Charlton!!!!!
