Message from the President
If you are not aware of it, our President, Pete DeGiulio, has walking pneumonia. He is recuperating at home in the very capable hands of his wife, Connie and family. The Board and members of the Italian-American Social Club pray that he has a speedy recovery as his presence is greatly missed.
Pete has asked that his wishes be given to all for a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. He is very appreciative of all the get-well cards, calls, and emails from the membership.
Also, please remember that there is NO General Membership Meeting in December.
Remember – Respect. Before you speak, Listen. Before you write, Think.
Before you quit, Try. Before you Die, Live.

A Bountiful Christmas Cari Soci, A number of years ago a dear member, Helen Lamperti, shared the following letter that she received from a young girl in her elementary school creative writing class. Below is a copy of it in its original text.
MY CHRISTMAS MEMORIES Last Christmas Eve I committed a mortal sin. After the fact, I felt ashamed and I was in awe that I actually had did it. The mortal sin that I committed was, I ate chicken on Christmas Eve. But, let me start from the beginning and what lead up to this blasphemy of the Italian culture.
Every year for as long as I can remember, Christmas has been at my house. Whether it was downstairs in my grandmother’s dinning room or in the full basement, the whole family would gather from all over New York. Now you have to understand something, my family consists of my grandmouther and grandfather, when he was alive, my parent and my little brother, my moma’s 3 brothers, dada’s mom and sister, which is my aunt Ida, and my dog. That’s 19 people and a pooch every year. That doesn’t include however the years when my grandmother’s brothers and their families where over too, plus several long time friends of the family. Plus add to the mix that we are Italian and you can imagine how much how much food needs to be prepared. But before I get into the amount of food that needs to be cooked, let me explain a little about how Italians celebrate Christmas. As opposed to most other cultures, we have our big celebration dinner on Christmas Eve, as opposed to Christmas Day. Why? I have the lightest clue, but what I can tell you is, all we eat is fish. This is because to eat fish on Christmas Eve was in accord with the religious traditions, which prescribed a meatless meal on the day before the Feast. The fish is a symbol for Jesus and many Italians still carry this tradition to mark the meal on the vigil of His birth. So, our entire Christmas Eve dinner has never stepped foot on land. But that wasn’t even the beginning, oh no, before we even saw the fish,, there is what we like to call the antipasto. The antipasto consisted of several items. There were at least 4 kinds of cheeses and several types of crackers. There were also black olives, roasted peppers, lupini beans, chick peas, artichoke hearts, and marinated mushrooms. After the antipasto there was the main course, or should I say courses. First there was the zuppa di pesce which had mussels, shrimp, clams, squingiel, lobster and scallops. In addition there was spaghetti with mussels and crab legs, fried calamari, baccala and eggplant and parmesan for my uncle and aunt who don’t eat fish. For dessert, fresh fruit, a variety of nuts, pastries, cakes and more. Now, with such a large family, large quantities of food need to be made and there is one woman who makes it all, from zuppa to nuts, and she is my grandmother.
Except, last year she decided that she was getting too old to do all the preparations for such an extravagant feast so she decided someone else should do it. So we went out to dinner, all 19 of us. And that is where it brings us today and my mortal sin of eating chicken on Christmas Eve. This year we are back in comforts of the basement and the fish will be made and the antipasto will be served, however, the tradition of the great tradition will not be made by my grandmother, it is being passed down to me, Tiffany Bianco.

Dear friends and members of the Italian American Club,
I am so grateful and overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from dear friends.
Frank loved and supported this club effortlessly, not only to balance the books but to instill a pride and comradery in the preservation of a club that not only exemplifies our Heritage, but brotherly love and a fun and harmonious atmosphere.
I pray that in his honor, this can be achieved by everyone pulling together and working toward a united effort to elevate this club to the heights that our predecessors thrived to achieve.
Thank you all so much for sharing in my grief and being so supportive and keeping my spirits up during this difficult time.
Sincerely with love,
Berta Morelli
