Much of the research done concerning extracurricular activitiesand their influence on a student's success in the classroomsuggests that these activities have a positive influence ongrades and test scores. Extracurricular activities give educatorsan opportunity to influence a student's life in a way that isvaluable beyond the classroom because these activities canhelp students stay focused on their school work and aspirefor lofty goals. Students and teachers working together canalso help build a mentoring relationship which benefits both theyoung person's and teacher’s life. The mentoring relationshipderived from after school involvement is important for studentsbecause part of education is learning to interact with adults.Being involved in extracurricular activities does allow both theteacher and the students to have fun, whatever the activity maybe. Being a coach, teammate or an advisor enables you tolaugh a bit more, show enthusiasm away from your classroomand revel in the humour that many students like to show fromtime to time.

BULLYING: NO WAY!On Tuesday 14th March, we took a stand together at ChartersTowers State High School by saying ‘No Way to Bullying’ bysupporting the National Day of Action against Bullying andViolence. This annual day is Australia's key anti-bullying eventfor schools and students to 'take a stand together' againstbullying and violence in schools, the classroom and beyond.

The day started with free dress where students wereencouraged to wear orange, in support of ‘Bullying. No Wayday.’ Funds raised will go to Kids Help Line.

Our whole school assembly was engaging, with the help of anda thank you to our guest speakers, Michelle Ramm, MentalHealth Clinician from Remote Emotions and Rory Rhodes, former Professional American Baseball player, now PersonalTrainer in Charters Towers, for delivering important messagesto our students and our teachers. Rory’s key message ‘Treatothers like you want to be treated yourself’ was an importantone which he addressed to the school on assembly. Roryreturned to the school at lunchtime and joined in with the funactivities.

Students participated in the photo booth by writing pledges ofanti-bullying, and the photos along with the day’s events will becreated into a slideshow for all of the school to see and to helpcontinue spreading the message of bullying is never okay.

Charters Towers State High School have registered and madea pledge to be a star weaving school by making 200 stars. Thisis an initiative by the National Day of Action against Bullying andViolence. This is our sign of commitment to ending all forms ofviolence. Each star will contribute to a striking one million starsinstalled for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Thechallenge supports Embracing 2018 and the One Million Starsto End Violence project. Many students were creating stars andthis will be an ongoing project on Mondays lunch one in theLibrary for any students who’d like to join in.

A chalk mural covers the cement under the Resource Centre, with kindness messages, and stop bullying messages.

A game of touch footy between the teachers and students wasa success, and a great game it was with the teachers winning; Ibelieve they may have had a little help from some students whofilled in on their team. Students surrounded the oval cheeringfor their preferred team.

Sausages were sizzling, and the students’ bellies were contentafter having a sausage or two at lunch.

Our Resource Centre looks great and has been decorated withthe ‘Bullying. No way!’ messages.

Thank you to everyone who helped deliver the message thatbullying and violence is never okay and made this veryimportant day a success.

Year 9

English

Year 9 English this term has revolved around studentsinteracting with language and visual features in Australian texts. They have been identifying how these features can createrepresentations of Australia’s people, history and culture. Weare in the final stages of assessment for this unit with studentspresenting this week in a panel discussion. They are usinglanguage and visual features they have chosen from the textsthey have been shown in class and have written a speechwhere they are using the features as well as persuading thereader why they should be used on a brochure to representAustralia.

History

During History this term Year 9s have been investigating theIndustrial Revolution and significant inventions that haveimpacted upon people and society over the short and longterm. Students have used sources to understand the impactthat certain inventions have had on the economy, quality of life, environment and society in order to draw conclusions aboutwhy they think their chosen invention is significant. Assessmentfor this unit is a research task which students have beenworking on during class, they have chosen an invention and arelooking at the cause and effects of the invention as well as theshort term and long term impacts this invention has had. Byworking with primary and secondary sources the students havedeepened their knowledge of historical terms, source analysis, and research.

Jade Russell, Teacher of English and History

Maths

Year 9 Maths are currently applying real world knowledge intheir next unit. Whilst the overarching focus of the unit isunderstanding surface area and volume of composite shapes, students are asked to design a realistic water collection andstorage system for certain areas of school.

To enable the students to complete this task successfully, theyare required to choose a location in the school to use as acollection point, decide what the collected water will be usedfor, analyse data of local rainfall and then design a storage tankto suit their purpose.

Whilst there is a strong focus on mathematical process andprocedures, there is also the application of practical andreasonable decision making and justification being used toback up the student choices.

Over all this has been an enjoyable term for most students inregards to maths. There has been a step up in expectation andbroadening of their mathematical knowledge with links to realworld applications.

Social and Community Studies

This year, State High again offers SACS to both Year 11 andYear 12 students so, therefore, the class is a composite: eachyear level completes the same units with slight variations to theconditions.

SACS aims to provide students with the skills to functionefficiently, effectively and positively in current and future liferoles. It encourages the students to recognise that emotionaland social wellbeing are significant to individuals, families, thecommunity and society as a whole. Over the two year program, students will discover themselves through a variety of topics. This term we are exploring Science and Technology. Thestudents are in the midst of their final draft of the multi-modalassessment; scripts and PowerPoints will be submitted todayand presented in the following week.

Term 2 will cover the topic of the World of Work, term 3 Legally,it could be you and Term 4 is Money Matters.

I am looking forward to taking this journey with the Year 11 and12 students this year!
