At 158 Cecil Street, tenants and visitors are greeted with a stunning view of lush greenery from the ground level up

Amid the skyscrapers in Singapore’s CBD is a hidden gem of a lush and vibrant hanging garden.

158 Cecil Street, a 14-storey commercial building managed by Alpha Investment Partners, Keppel Land’sfund management arm, has transformed its seven-storey atrium into a seamless, vertical green wall.

An online video featuring this unique oasis that thrives in the heart of a commercial building brought Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Singapore’s Minister of National Development, to tour the building on 25 July 2012.

“Skyrise greenery is an area that is unique to Singapore as not many countries have embarked on such projects. I am impressed with how well the atrium space at 158 Cecil Street has been designed to incorporate lush greenery and sustainability,” said Minister Khaw.

Minister Khaw was briefed on the design and implementation of the wall-garden and was also given an inside look to how the plants were irrigated daily.

The wall-garden was constructed using existing disused planters which were reinstated alongside new plants and draped over the columns and edges

To ensure a robust business continuity management framework, Keppel Land also regularly reviews the crisis management plans for its operations in Singapore and overseas.

On 13 August 2012, a team from Singapore comprising representatives from Keppel Land’s Risk Management and HR departments as well as Keppel Corporation’s GCC spent one day at Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to train the teams at Taman Sutera and Sutera Mall on how to develop a crisis management plan.

The workshop was attended by about 20 personnel, including Mr Steven Shum, DGM for Keppel Land’s operations in Malaysia, and staff from critical functions. The same training was also rolled out to other business units in Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and India via teleconferences.

Ms April Chang, AGM for Keppel Land’s Risk Management department, shared, “Businesses today are more vulnerable to risks due to the highly volatile environment we operate in. There is therefore a need to enhance and ensure operational resilience.”

Jointly organised by Keppel Corporation’s Group Corporate Communications (GCC) and Keppel Land’s Human Resources (HR) departments, the workshop helped management better understand their role as spokespersons and be equipped to deal with communications issues.

The executives had hands-on experience preparing media statements as well as anticipating questions from members of the press.

The media training also involved placing them under a fire of critical questions during simulated interviews and press conferences.

Terrorist attacks, natural disasters, business disputes and IT system failures – myriad issues can potentially strike any company.

In the midst of such incidents, poorly managed communications can seriously dent stakeholders’ long-term confidence in the company as well as impact business operations.

As part of Keppel Land’s crisis management preparation and planning, a second series of crisis communications training workshops was held on 24 August 2012 for its key management executives to reinforce the Company’s crisis-readiness.

Keppel Land was lauded for its excellent safety performance at three projects namely Reflections at Keppel Bay, Ocean Financial Centre and Marina Bay Suites. The main contractors for these projects are Woh Hup, Obayashi-Woh Hup JV and Woh Hup, respectively.

The Company’s win added to the Keppel Group’s record 34 safety awards garnered at the WSH Awards 2012, and this was the highest number of safety awards ever achieved by a single organisation since the awards were introduced in 2006.

Mr Choo Chiau Beng, CEO of Keppel Corporation and Chairman of Keppel Land, said, “At Keppel, we emphasise that safety is everyone’s business. We ensure that workplace safety and health messages percolate throughout the entire organisation. “We have various platforms that facilitate the sharing of safety experiences and lessons, promote safety innovation as well as conduct safety training and leadership courses across the business units in the Group.

“We are very encouraged by WSHC’s recognition of our sustained safety efforts. Beyond recognition from the government and industry, our greatest reward is seeing everyone

BUILDING LIVEABLE CITIES

With increasing pressure on urban infrastructure, the environment and resources, the challenge lies in how to manage such a growth sustainably.

From 1 to 5 July 2012, global leaders, policy makers and industry experts in sustainable urban development convened in Singapore for the World Cities Summit (WCS) to exchange ideas and solutions to tackle these issues.

Leveraging synergy in competencies, Keppel Land and Keppel Integrated Engineering exhibited their strengths at the WCS. The companies showcased their expertise in developing large-scale integrated developments and townships as well as providing innovative environmental engineering solutions.

Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City (Tianjin Eco-City), the landmark bilateral project between Singapore and China drew strong interest at the WCS. Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-CityInvestment and Development Co., Ltd. (SSTEC), a 50-50 joint venture formed by the Keppel–led Singapore consortium and the Chinese consortium, is the master developer for the Eco-City.

Entitled ‘Building a Model for Sustainable Development’, SSTEC’s booth told the story of the creation of a thriving Eco-City, incorporating the best ideas from Singapore, China and the international community to build a city that is ecologically friendly, socially harmonious and economically sustainable.

CITY OF EXCELLENCE

In addition to showcasing its urban solutions and participating in dialogue, Keppel is proud to have contributed to one of the highlights of WCS – the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize.

It is awarded every two years to honour outstanding achievements and contributions to the creation of liveable, vibrant and sustainable urban communities around the world. In support of Singapore’s efforts to promote exemplary thought-leadership and exchange of ideas among cities, Keppel Corporation is a Founding Sponsor

of the Prize, which comprises an award certificate, a gold medallion and a cash prize of $300,000.

This year’s Prize Laureate was the Mayor of New York City (NYC), Michael Bloomberg, and the Departments of Transportation, City Planning, and Parks and Recreation of NYC.

NYC was recognised for its achievements in sustainable development. In particular, NYC was lauded for its efforts to rejuvenate neglected public spaces through the creation of innovative new parks

such as transforming a disused elevated railway into a popular skypark 30 m above the ground.

Based on sustainable design principles, these parks are rejuvenating once abandoned waterfront areas and making use of innovative technologies and recycled materials.

Among some of NYC’s goals are the planting of 1 million new trees, making streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians as well as ensuring that every resident lives no more than a 10-minute walk from a park.

Both the SIP and Tianjin Eco-City projects demonstrate how public-private partnerships provide holistic and practical solutions which can effectively address urbanisation challenges in a shorter span of time while sustaining value for all stakeholders concerned.

STEADY PROGRESS IN ECO-CITY

Singapore’s Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong visited Tianjin Eco-Cityduring his official visit to Tianjin on 4 and 5 September 2012 to view the development and be updated on its progress.

During his visit, PM Lee was briefed on Keppel’s various projects in the Eco-City, including property developments, environmental engineering projects and logistics services. Welcoming PM Lee at the Keppel Tianjin Showcase were Keppel Corporation’s Chairman Dr Lee Boon Yang, Keppel Corporation's CEO and Keppel Land's Chairman Mr Choo Chiau Beng

and Keppel Corporation's Senior ED Mr Teo Soon Hoe.

As part of his visit, PM Lee also met with Mr Zhang Gaoli, Secretary of the Communist Party of China Tianjin Municipal Committee. The two leaders recognised the good progress in the development of the Tianjin Eco-City. PM Lee also assured Party Secretary Zhang that the project has the full support of the Singapore Government. He also stressed that the Tianjin Eco-City must not only be workable, but also replicable.

PM Lee signed the framework agreement on the development of the Tianjin Eco-City with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in 2007, which formally launched this landmark cooperation project to jointly create a practical, scalable and replicable model for sustainable development for other cities in China and the rest of the world.

Splashing good timesExciting activities continue to take place at Marina at Keppel Bay (MKB), proving that it is a world-class marina with a difference.

CRUISING FOR A CAUSE

To foster and strengthen relations among the boating community, MKB has introduced an annual cruising event where boaters can bond over their favourite activity – sailing.

NEW DEPTHS OF EXPERTISE

Staff training is part and parcel of MKB's strategy to deliver greater depths of expertise and service standards.

Since June 2012, MKB has invested in dive training programmes to equip its crew with the necessary skills and knowledge to safely and efficiently undertake underwater pontoon maintenance and regular checks to ensure healthy growth of marine and coral life in the marina’s waters.

Roy Ng, Marina Manager at MKB who is an Open Water Scuba Instructor certified by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), has been conducting the training sessions for the Marina Operations team.

After undergoing a series of theory and practical lessons in confined waters, six trainees have since

graduated and received certification as PADI Open Water Divers.

“The training is designed to be comprehensive to ensure that our Marina Operations team

has all the requisite competencies to perform safe and effective dives to help upkeep Marina at Keppel Bay’s standards,” shared Roy.

The inaugural annual cruise took place from 31 August to 6 September 2012. But it was not all fun for the boaters who had a bigger objective in mind - to deliver donated items such as blankets, food and even computers to the less fortunate living in the Anambas Islands in the Riau Archipelago.

Global mindsets, local insights

“Organisations learn only through individuals who learn,” Peter Senge, an American scientist and authority on organisational development once said. Is it any wonder then that the valuing and nurturing of employees occupies such an important space as one of Keppel’s core values?

Across Borders tracks the learning experiences of two Keppelites at Keppel Land Vietnam.

RIDING HIGH

Armed with a penchant for learning and an open and globalised mindset, the world is her oyster for Nguyen Dang Nhi.

The 27-year-old Vietnamese spent several years studying abroad to achieve her real estate degree at the National University of Singapore. She has since returned to her home country and is working as a Business Development Senior Executive with Keppel Land Vietnam.

Global mindset, local insights - Nhi gets around the local way by manoeuvring around heavy traffic in Ho Chi Minh City on a scooter

Minh shared, “Not only did I gain a much better understanding of Keppel Land and the other Keppel businesses, but also experienced many things never imagined.

“On the second day alone, I boarded my first semi-submersible rig at the naming ceremony of ENSCO 8506. Then later in the month, I scaled the KFELS B Class jackup rig, Nezalezhnist, owned by Ukrainian customer, Naftogaz.”

Upon the suggestion of Ms Wang Look Fung, Director of GCC, Minh also travelled to Indonesia to help with preparations for the groundbreaking of International Financial Centre, and the opening of Jakarta Garden City’s clubhouse.

“I picked up many first hand lessons in event and media engagement on this trip as well as got a glimpse into a new culture,” Minh enthused.

Summing up her experience, Minh shared, “I was fortunate to have great friends at GCC who were very supportive of me. As I encountered more colleagues with the Can Do! attitude, I began to understand the core values better, and this has made me a proud Keppelite.”

Minh (middle) and the Keppel Volunteers at the National Day Parade preview

Leveraging her business acumen and fluency in Vietnamese and English, Nhi is deeply involved in Keppel’s expansion plans in Vietnam. Her job scope includes conducting market research and feasibility studies to assess the viability of potential project sites for investment.

As Keppel Land continues to grow its international footprint, there will be more opportunities for Keppelites with an international mindset like Nhi to work in different markets. Her advice to Keppelites hoping to venture overseas is to have the right attitude.

She added, “We should always embrace the 3Rs at work - Respect, Responsible and Ready. Always respectothersandlisten;alwaysberesponsible for what you do and be ready to take on new challenges. With these in mind, we can tackle any situation proactively and positively.”

BUILDING HOMES

Over seven days in December last year, a team of 12 students from the Singapore Management University-Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter (SMU-HFH) worked alongside underprivileged families to build homes in the village of Nandgaon in Mumbai, India. The expedition was made possible with Keppel Land’s donation of $10,000.

Ng Yu Li, one of the participants from SMU, shared, “Keppel Land’s contribution was instrumental to the success of the project. It significantly covered most of the trip expenses, including the costly building materials as well as our airfare and accommodation costs.”

On behalf of Keppel Land, Ms Woon Pek Yong, AGM of Investor Relations & Research, received the Certificate of

Appreciation from Mr S Dhanabalan, Patron of the Habitat for Humanity in Singapore on 31 August 2012.

SEEDING THE FUTURE

From 9 to 12 December last year, Keppel Land led a team of 15 Keppelites on the first Words on Wheels (WoW) volunteer trip to a village in Chuong My District in Hanoi, Vietnam. Aimed at encouraging and promoting staff involvement in social activities, the event saw staff volunteers bond with about 150 students over activities including storytelling, arts and crafts as well as outdoor games.

The WoW is a mobile library project which aims to build up a culture of reading and self-learning among children. Keppel Land is the main sponsor of this project, which is a joint initiative by the Singapore International Foundation and Hanoi Public Library.

Keppel Land’s contribution towards the WoW project was also recognised at the annual Singapore International Volunteerism appreciation dinner on 14 September 2012 where Singapore’s President Tony Tan Keng Yam presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Mr Kwok Yan Hoe, DGM of Corporate Development.
