Demonstration of the techniques of making stained-glass windows, cutting antique glass and assembling the lead rods, plus the development of techniques from the Middle Ages to the present day, followed by a guided tour of the collections of ancient and modern stained-glass windows.

Lecture illustrated by wide-screen video showing the different stages and techniques used to restore the stained-glass windows. Presentation of the restoration programmes currently under way, focusing on the stained-glass windows and the spectacular work being done to restore the 13th-century painted decoration, which has remained well preserved underneath the dirt and dust that has accumulated over the centuries.

The Museum of Stained Glass is home to a collection of 83 original 15th and 16th-century stained-glass windows unique in France that illustrates the iconography of the Renaissance in Chartres, reveals missing links in the history of stained-glass art in this major centre of medieval art, illustrates the thriving business of master glaziers in Chartres and shows how Chartres' stained-glass ateliers have worked on uninterrupted from the Middle Ages to the present day.

An international overview of contemporary

stained-glass artDemonstration and guided tour – 1½ hrs

Two hundred and eighty-six artists from the five continents were commissioned to create works of stained-glass art on the theme 'in search of the light of the world' especially for this exhibition at the International Stained-Glass Centre in Chartres, forming a collection of 321 completely original new works.

The result is a unique overview that provides insight into the pictorial approach of contemporary artists from all over the world in an exhibition running at the Museum of Stained Glass in Chartres until 30 September 2018.

One of the finest examples of Western art, Chartres Cathedral is undergoing a restoration campaign unrivalled in France: stained-glass windows, portals, carvings, painted plasterwork and interior walls. Demonstration of the medieval stained-glass window making technique and presentation of the window restoration programmes, followed by a guided tour.

The masterpiece of Max Ingrand, one of France’s greatest 20th-century master glass artists, is made up of vast panoramic windows beneath an immense hexagonal cupola. This church was built in 1962 in the Rechèvres district of Chartres by the archi-tect Jean Redréau, using innovative tri-directional techniques. The transfer of the tomb of Franz Stock there in 1963 made it a place of memorial and pilgrimage Europe-wide.

The two churches built in Chartres by Jean Redréau in 1957 and 1963: the Church of St John the Baptist in Rechèvres, with Max Ingrand’s panoramic stained-glass windows, and the Church of St Lazarus in Lèves, with dalle-de-verre windows by Gabriel Loire and sculptures by Jean Lambert-Rucki.

Innovative buildings of stained-glass art and the art of light and featuring two of France’s most important 20th-century glass artists.

Glass in ChartresThe Museum of Stained Glass is home to a collection of original Renaissance stained-glass windows and also provides an overview of international contemporary stained-glass art. More than 400 stained-glass windows are on display at Loëns Gothic hall and attic in Rue du Cardinal Pie, close to the cathedral's north portal.
