RPM caught up with the band in St. John's Newfoundland, which is one leg of their Labatt's tour, and we asked drummer Chris Steffler if indeed the band had gone mainstream. "We're doing more of our own thing right now, than we were the last time," he explained. "The last time we were doing our own thing too, but now we're evolving and doing what we really like to do." We wanted to have more of a classier image than last time and we're ap- pealing to an older audience as well." There are probably many factors that contributed to the almost meteoric rise in chart popularity of Platinum Blonde, and Steffler was asked if the addition of Kenny MacLean was a major factor. "Yes - I think he had a little bit to do with it. He has musical ideas, and he's also involved with a fraction of the writing, and he's given us a stronger vocal department. This is allowing Mark (Holmes - lead singer) a little more flexibility - to collaborate with the audience and get more into it." Steffler was also asked if Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson had an influence on their Alien Shores album. "Well, personally, I really ad - mire Rush's stuff," Steffler answered. It was reported in the Feb. 2/85 issue of RPM that James Collins and John Randall had

released their first single on their own Mellow Drama label and that initial response from

A/C programmers had been encouraging. The Oshawa, Ont. songwriting team, who had produced the single locally at Quest

we're trying to get to know how the industry works - trying to figure out what we've done right and wrong."

Besides the re -issue of the single Collins has done an independent recording artist

documentary with Aaron Badgely of CKAR Oshawa.

Stay Hungry selling 500,000 copies and Ratt selling almost 200,000 copies of their debut

LP - and all that happened this year along with some smaller successes. So, we've had to deal with the yuppie-ization of AOR radio

where they've just basically backed off in programming heavy metal, with the excep-

tion of a few who continue to play rock 'n roll."

Cooke went on to explain that the non - airing of heavy metal "left an enormous void

in the information chain, in terms of reaching what we know is a very large market of heavy

metal "music fans, which brought us to the spring of this year. We knew we were going to

have new records by Motley Crue, AC/DC and Ratt

- all within 3 weeks of each other. We

felt that the situation begged for a very strong effort to try and get the word out to heavy metal fans that the major releases were

available. We also have smaller acts that we wanted to tell them about." It's not certain, at time of writing, if the

Heavy Metal News will be a monthly publica- tion. "The thing that made the paper swing this time," says Cooke, "is that we had 3 ma- jor releases right on top of each other and we

were able to tie together a cohesive campaign. Now, whether that happens again - obviously we'll have to wait and see. If it is successful I

can see it happening."

Gauging the paper's success will be dif- ficult in view of its "au gratis" status, but

Cooke explains this away as "Obviously, if we break some records and get good response

from the record stores together with reasonable sales, then it is successful, but it

will be tough to assess - it's a subjective thing. We'll have to try and make an assessment,

but it's far too early to do that yet -

perhaps

a month or 2 down the line."

Response to the paper so far is encourag- ing."The resultant sales for targeted records

has been very good. The Motley Crue LP is really blowing through quite nicely and, in fact, it has broken down some of the airplay

barriers that I mentioned earlier."

Cooke concludes with, "This paper deserves a shot. We realized that if we were

going to make an attractive vehicle, then it couldn't be done on a 'lick and a promise' budget, so we spent whatever dollars were re- quired to make it look good."

Deltech to rep Lexicon equipment

Lexicon of Waltham, Mass. has appointed Deltech Communications Equipment of

Markham, Ontario as their broadcast sale representatives. Among the digital audio pro-

cessing equipment that Deltech will market are the Emmy Award winning 1200C Audio

Time Compressor/Expander and the 1300 Digital Audio Delay Synchronizer.

The 1200C can shorten a television or radio program or commercial to fit into a

tighter time slot and the 1300 unit can ensure lip sync by automatically sychronizing a stereo

audio signal to its corresponding picture despite video signal delay caused by passage

through a frame sychronizer. According to Lawrence Rich, Lexicon's

Broadcast Sales Manager for North America, "Only the most respected firms in the in- dustry have been included in our broadcast

sales organization. Deltech Communications is such a firm and we are proud that this fine

company will represent Lexicon broadcast equipment."

We're being studied to death . . . !!The Department of Communication's dis-cussion paper which Elvira refers to asRadio vs the Sound Recording Industry, isjust another study/report, what have you, which is a stalling tactic by this govern-ment. Everybody wants a handout. Whatthis industry needs is tax incentives to getprojects going. Just to give you an example, wouldn't you like to have a piece of acompany that had a current number onealbum and single? What the governmentdoes for oil exploration should be donefor the record industry. But you don'tbuy a piece of a record, which doesn'tmake sense - you buy a piece of a singeror group. If they score, you're part ofthe publishing, concerts, T-shirts, movies, and everything the artist or group does.No one in their right mind would investin ONE record production. Getting backto that artist with a number one album,it took years and many productions to getto the point where the whole project paidoff. Investors would be interested in thistype of project. Now all we have to do isforget we're Canadians and get the govern-ment to give investors a break, and puttogether some good prospectives. (EC: Iwish I'd invested a few thousand bucksin . . . ) NO NAMES . . . Ellie! I think we'vemade our point.

nouncement of the tie-in with Labatt's, theband's album was released, and it was a hitout of the gate. Much credit for this initialsuccess has to go to the CBS marketing andpromotion team that set the promotion/saleswheels in motion. Labatt's will probablybenefit more from their $500,000 investmentin Platinum Blonde than from many of theirown media blitz type of promotions that costfar more. "Labatt's are helping us out a lot,"Steffler continues. "This tour, which they aresponsoring, allows us to play smaller centresthat we normally couldn't play - mainlybecause we couldn't afford it. Like manyplaces in the Maritimes, for example St.John's where I'm talking to you from."

The future looks good for PlatinumBlonde, but as Steffler points out, "On thistour, we're going to worry about working thelive aspect and we've got a lot of work aheadof us. We'll also keep writing in mind. It'salways good to have ideas ready, because ournext album will have to come, but we're notfocusing on that right now. We're concen-trating on the concerts and giving a goodpresentation. We're going to give iteverything we've got and work as hard as wecan - burnout or whatever - we're just goingto go for it."

newest addition, drummer Barry Connors of Coney Hatch). As Lee Aaron makes her tran- sition from metal to straight -ahead rock, we

expect her European success to translate in Canada and very soon south of the border as

well. One day my dream of a "Girls From At-

tic" poster calendar will come true. In the meantime, everybody's favorite girl next

door, Katrina, jets into Canada for a quick Canadian tour through Ottawa, Montreal, London, Kitchener, Toronto, Kenora and

Hamilton prior to hitting the studio for their next LP. In the meantime, their latest 45, Do You Want Crying has hit into the Top 40 in

Around again with Springfield band

Two original members pf legendary '60s band Buffalo Springfield, will soon be power-

ing a new outfit, The Springfield Band, through a 6 -wk. American club tour.

One, bassist Bruce Palmer, is currently doing selected Ontario dates in a lineup that

includes Al Trosser (drums), Stanley Endersby (guitar), Jill Cross (tambourine,

backing vocals), and Frank Wilkes (lead vocals, guitar). The other, drummer Dewy

Martin, will join those above on a club tour through the U.S., pencilled in for late

August/early September. In a recent telephone conversation, Palmer characterized the band's sound as

country -pop. He was last in the public eye as

a contributor to Neil Young's Trans LP and a subsequent European tour. Young is reportedly willing to participate

in a planned reunion of the original Buffalo Springfield slated for a California Veterans

Association reunion in October.

AMI signing for Ellis Family Band

The Ellis Family Band from PEI, has just signed with the Nashville -based AMI label,

after putting the finishing touches to their new and soon to be released album. While in

Nashville they also did some backup vocals for Rich Landers who, as Brian Ellis informs

RPM, "was looking for a different type of harmony well different for Nashville anyway." From this upcoming LP the band expects

to have 3 singles released, with AMI simultaneously releasing in both Canada and

the U.S. -

their first single Don't Tease Me will be available mid -August.

After the success of their tirst Lt' in Canada - all 3 singles made the RPM charts.

Spokesman Ellis hopes that with this new signing they will be able to crack the tough

U.S. market. With Nashville looking for new ideas and fresh material, Ellis says "8 of the

10 songs were original - we had a good selec-

tion -

and it helped." The band will continue touring for the next year, with a few months

off for writing and composing, then "back to the studio next fall and a new album."

Christian songwriting contest to be annual event

Skylight Records (a division of Contem- porary Christian Music), have announced

that due to the success of their International songwriting contest held last year, they intend

to make the contest an annual event. Three Canadian writers placed in the

Top 10 and are included in the Tapping The Underground LP. They are Lina Fulciglia,

Joe Di Francesco and Robbie Jaster, Skylight has advised RPM that "gospel programmers and enthusiasts may get demo service or pro- duct by writing Skylight Records, 939 Felix

Ave., Windsor, Ont. N9C 3L2."

Grand Ole Opry availablefor Canadian syndicationTom Griscom, Opryland USA in Nashville, has announced that "a portion of the GrandOle Opry is being made available to radio sta-tions throughout the United States andCanada."

A 30 minute segment of the Saturdaynight performance is being offered forsimulcast, which is currently carried by theNashville Network. There are approximately60 artists on the roster, including LorettaLynn, Barbara Mandrell and The GatlinBrothers Band.

Griscom added, "In the short time thelive telecast of Grand Ole Opry aired, it hasbecome the highest rated half hour on theNashville Network." He also noted that"The simulcast will broaden the Grand OleOpry's audience and even offer the GrandOle Opry in stereo on FM stations."

Ray Mercey concentrates

Having completed his first solo single, It's AllIn The Touch, Ray Mercey is concentratingon promoting the single, but has no tourplans set at this time. He is currently perfor-ming with a local band in his hometown ofElmira, Ont.

Released on his brothers' MBS label, thesingle was produced by Mike Francis and waswritten by the Nashville team ofBourke/Bogard/Giles. Rick Giles was recent-ly in Ontario calling on several country sta-tions giving a promo boost to the single.

Ray had been a member of the MerceyBrothers band from its inception and was oneof the founders of the MBS label. He decid-ed, a few years ago, to take a short breakfrom the industry. "I knew if I was going tostart recording again," says Mercey, "then Imight as well do it right. I believe the song islyrically strong and, thanks to Mike Francis,a very solid production."
