    From The Presidential Seat:

What a year so far. Three months in and the world has gone crazy; Egypt and Libya revolting against their

Dictatorships, earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, floods and fires, and the threat of a nuclear disaster just to top it off!It is difficult to imagine just what it would be like to have to live through these disasters, and we can only hope that

all of those affected can find some hope and support to keep going through the trials they now have to face.

Closer to home, our own bit of craziness Mad March is over and Easter is hopping closer... With the Fringe,

Womad, Clipsal and its associated traffic chaos behind us, we can officially say that our motorsport season is under

way. We have already had some representation out on the track, with our Editor and Club Secretary Seth getting his

STi fired up at Mallala for the time attack, then his partner Lona joined him for some dirty fun at the Khanacross at

Lanac Park in their Swift GTI, results inside!! Lona and Seth are also entered in the Mt Alma Hillclimb so we wish then

good luck. Ill be there taking some snaps, and there is always action aplenty so come on down and check it out if

    youre free!

Socially, we had the bowling battle of all time at Norwood Bowl with 8 members gearing up for some great fun and

laughs, photos and updates for upcoming events inside too.

We also have another Committee announcement, with Michael Lange joining us as the General Committee Member.

Mikes wife Steph is our Membership Officer, so we are keeping the family theme alive! As always, all members

are welcome to the Committee Meetings, at the Royal Hotel, Kent town, first Wednesday of each month from

    5:30pm.

Ill leave it there for now, hope to see you at Mt Alma, or at an event near here soon!!

    Thanks Team, be safe.

    Dirt Motorkhana - Sunday 20th

    February

Motorkhana is an event designed to testthe acceleration, braking and general

manoeuvrability of vehicles, and the skill

and judgment of the driver. These events

may be conducted on sealed or unsealed

surfaces, and must not include speed as

part of any test. Generally conducted in a

car park or large flat open area, they

    involve starting from a "garage",

negotiating a series of test markers and

parking in a finish "garage" as quickly as

possible. Time penalties are accrued for

contacting any test marker, failing to

follow the correct route through the

course or not parking correctly in the

finish garage. If you are interested in taking part in motorsport Motorkhana is a great first step with a very low

    barrier to entry.

This dirt motorkhana was held at the Southern Districts Car Clubs track Lanac Park just outside of Mount Compass,

while the road surface might not be suitable for your pride and joy (thats what our club cruises are for) it is theperfect type of event for a cheap light weight runabout. Lona and I both had a blast out in our little Suzuki Swift Gti

and look forward to many more fun filled and exciting events.

    Time Attack Round 1 - Sunday 6th

    March

As always this was a great event that

challenged both drivers and cars to seewho could achieve the fastest flying lap.

Held at Mallala Motorsport Park and

organised by the Mitsubishi GSR / EVO

Club it continues to draw a great amount

of spectators and a high class of

competitors. Round 1 saw a wide variety

of cars being pushed to their limits

including 7 Subarus, 2 of them even

making it in to the top 10 outright.

Ultimate honours had to go to Steve

Knight in his EVO 6 that blaster around

the track nearly a full second quicker than

    anyone else!

For a great read check out Daniel Days article at the end of this newsletter.

Also a quick reminder to all members we have 2 Team

Sooby Marquees (as pictured to the left) that are

available to all club members. Please let one of the

committee members know if you would like to borrow

    Khanacross - Sunday 13th

    March

Unlike Motorkhana a Khanacross event introduces the element of speed to the mix. While not opening up the Lanac

Park track completely the layout of cones is used to limit the cars top speed and keep them in second and third gear.

A full field of 45 competitors ensured a wide variety of cars

were pushed to their limits as evidenced in the top 10 results

below. While AWD cars have an obvious advantage over their

2WD counterparts the Southern Districts Car Club implement

a 5% handicap to ensure they do not dominate the leader

board and keep other cars competitive.

All in all this was a dusty action packed day full of thrills and

my thanks go out the Southern Districts Car Club for their

continuing commitment to running these events and

    maintaining the track.

Team Sooby Bowling Night Friday 4th

    March

The immortal struggle of human versus pins saw many highs and lows (much like a yo-yo trophy) and while the

ultimate war may never be won this was a successful battle as it was a fun filled evening full of strikes, spares andgutter balls. Thanks to everyone that came along to our Team Sooby ten pin bowling night, it was a great chance to

catch up with other club members and hopefully everyone had a great time. Be on the lookout for our next Team

Sooby event as it is sure to be just as fun!

    Just for Fun:

On the gaming front the first reviews of SHIFT 2:Unleashed are hitting the internet and is due for release

on the 1st of April for Xbox 360, PS3 & PC. Following on

from the critically acclaimed Need for Speed SHIFT

released in 2009 (and loosing the Need for Speed

moniker) this sequel is reported to add many new

features including the dynamic helmet cam that

organically pans and focuses the in car view to where

you should be looking on the track such as the apex of a

corner. The original Shift did an amazing job of creating

a real sense of speed when playing from behind the

wheel and Shift 2 is aiming to take this even further.

It is a focus on a more realistic racing experience that separates Shift 2 from the rest of the Need for Speed

franchise, swapping open roads and traffic for popular real world race tracks including our very own Bathurst. It does

keep some great things from the NFS franchise though like Autolog, this is a persistent leaderboard feature

introduced in NFS Hot Pursuit that constantly encourages you to compete with the lap times and scores set by your

online friends by letting them know when you have beaten them and vice-versa.

I for one am very excited to find out if this game will live up to its expectations and if it does you will be sure to find

me online for weeks to come!

    It's A Family Affair

A passion for motorsport is often a result of family influence, and at the grass roots level, it is apparent just by

looking at the entry list of the 2011 asp Mount Alma Mile. 16 South Australian families will have 2 or more memberscompeting up the gruelling 19% slope at the event, to be held on the 2nd & 3rd of April in the Hindmarsh Valley.

3 Generations of the Day family will be competing over the weekend; Tony Day in his Saleen Mustang, with his son

Sean and 16 year old grandson Daniel sharing a Subaru WRX STi. Daniel has been competing since the age of 12,

starting with motorkhanas and working up to his first rally in 2010, taking 12 th outright at the Kuitpo Forest event

with co-driver Steve Glenney. At the 2010 Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb, he placed 17th outright in a field of 120

    competitors.

Sean is no slouch either, making it into the finals in the 2010 Mount Alma Mile with the 3 rd fastest cumulative time

for the weekend. However disaster struck on the start line for the Top 12 shoot out when a component in the drive

train dramatically exploded, forcing him to withdraw and settle for 12th Outright. Sean also took 3rd outright in the

2009 Legend of the Lakes event. Tony imported his Saleen into Australia in 2007 and converted it to right hand drive.

Since then he has competed in many hillclimbs including Legend of the Lakes in 2009 and 2010, with his Mount Alma

debut being in 2010. Tony has also participated as an official course car in the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally since

    2009.

The Orme brothers, Simon and Tasman, finished 6th & 8th respectively at Mount Alma in 2010, and will be battling

again for family bragging rights. Matthew Leathley, who finished 11th in the 2010 event, has convinced his brother

Gavin to take up the challenge for the first time in 2011. Then there are brothers-in-law Dean Maul-Dunn and Danny

Maul, competing in their second year in a row, looking to follow up their 2010 performances. Andre Lukasz and son

Mitchell will be attending for the third year in a row, as will Allen Weber and son Andrew, and Ken Mee and his son

Brendan. 3rd Outright in 2010, Kier Wilson has enticed his son Kurt to come over from NSW compete, Graeme

Pederson will be being sized up by his son Dillon, while Andrew Stevens will be looking to keep ahead of his son

Dylan. Colin Zytveld will be competing alongside sons Troy & Wade, while Mark Rundle?s previous experience at the

Mile in 2009 might give him the advantage over father Bronte and brother Craig, who will be running for the first

    time.

Its not just the boys getting in on the action either,

with a few couples featuring in the entry list. James

and Dianne Crinson will be competing for the second

year in a row, while husband and wife teams Bruce

and Tracy Combe and Seth Coultas and Lona Zhang

will be first timers in 2011.

    Finally, and one to watch out for, is Tristan Catford;

outright winner in 2010, he will have his father as a

shadow for the weekend as Robert will be competing

for the first time in his own vehicle.

As a precursor for the 2011 Adelaide Hills Tarmac

Rally, the Mount Alma Mile is shaping up to be a

cracking event with a surplus of exciting competition.

The 2011 Mount Alma Mile is proud to be supporting the Variety SA Bash.

    Our Newest member:

A warm welcome to our newest member William and his Liberty 3.0R, we hope you enjoy what the club has to offer

and hopefully we see you at one of our events real soon!

    Editors Report:

Well that was one of the coldest, wettest summers I can remember, dont get me wrong Im not complaining, the

cooler weather is defiantly better for driving and I still have a green lawn! The end of summer also triggers the

Adelaide motorsport season which is defiantly kicking off in style with the first round of the Time Attack (check out

Daniel Days full report on page 15), various motorkhanas, both on dirt (Lanac Park) and concrete (Monarto Big W),

khanacross and of course the race that makes everyone in the city late for work, Clipsal 500. The next couple of

months have even more in store with the Mount Alma Mile, the Collingrove Hillclimb season starting, more

Khanacross and Motorkhana events, Round 2 of the Time Attack and finishing with the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally on

    the 27th

    to the 29th

    of May.

On a sombre note the last few months have seen some horrific tragedies not only here in Australia with the

Queensland and Victorian floods, but also our Kiwi neighbours in Christchurch and the earthquake, tsunami and

nuclear disaster that has devastated Japan. It is times like this that we should all be thankful for what we have

In April we will be getting together for another hills cruise also stay tuned to the forums and Facebook for details on

    our next go-kart event.

Stay safe and I will see you all out there.

Proudly I had made it into the Top Ten Shoot-out at position 7, the cars ahead of me all had a lot morepower except Nick in his EVO 8 RS which was a similar spec to my machine. Nicks tyres were no

match for the Hankooks and he knew this as we both headed into the Top Seven Shoot-out, where Iwas able to manage a 1:17.6. I finished 6th Outright for the day, and was comfortable knowing that

every car that fished above me had well in excess of 300kw ATW.Congratulations to Steve Knight from SKR who won the day outright in his EVO, and thanks to the

GSR/EVO Club and its members plus the Mallala officials for an outstandingly run event. Thanks also toall of my sponsors including my Mum who was moving house by herself while us boys were at the

    track!

Shane, Simon and Reece from S&J were all great support and help as usual. Their enthusiasm wasbrilliant which made the day even better, every time I came in after a run the car was thoroughly

checked over and they were very happy to tell me how I went.Brett Middleton from MRT Performance also sent us a set of front pads, which worked very well and

were much appreciated as a gift towards the opening of my Motorsport season, thanks Brett. We now look forward to The Mount Alma Mile Hill Climb in 4 weeks, we hope to have time to install theplanned PPG Grp-N 5/6 Speed Dog Gear-set plus have a health check done on the Extreme Twin Plateclutch set-up which has been performing perfectly since its install last year.
