Using systematic reviews and other documents supporting an ebp can assist you to decide what intervention best suits your client

You need to consider what you are actually looking for in order to obtain the most relevant information

Developing a PICO question will help determine this

How would you describe a group of patients/clients similar to yours?

What are the most important characteristics of the patient/client? This may include the primary problem, disease, or co-existing conditions.

Sometimes the sex, age, or ethnicity of a patient might be relevant to the diagnosis or treatment.

Which main intervention, treatment, or exposure are you considering?

What do you want to do for the client? Withdrawal? Relapse prevention? Treat anxiety? Improve social skills?

What factor may influence the prognosis of the patient? Age? Co-existing problems?

What is the main alternative to compare with the intervention?

Are you trying to decide between two different treatments?

Your question may not always have a specific comparison.

What can you hope to accomplish, measure, improve or affect?

What are you trying to do for the client? Improve coping skills? Relieve or eliminate symptoms? Reduce the number of adverse events? Improve function?

There are over 4,000 Cochrane Reviews currently available in The Cochrane Library.

Hundreds of newly completed Cochrane Reviews and protocols are added to The Cochrane Library every year. In addition, existing Cochrane Reviews are updated regularly as new information becomes available. This is particularly important in the rapidly changing healthcare environment.
