G ood evening everyone as I write these notes from the sunny tropical

island of Phuket in Thailand. We welcome you back to Park Road Stadium for tonight’s fixture against Atherton Collieries, who we congratulate on gaining promotion the other week - which has been well deserved over the course of the season. We of course offer a warm welcome the Players, Officials and Supporters who have made the journey to SK8 this evening.

Cheadle Town’s own dogged fight to reach one of the elusive Play-Off positions is becoming an extremely difficult task now following consecutive defeats to Barnton and Hanley Town. But we know we still need to fight for as many points between now and the end of the season to give ourselves a good chance to be involved in next seasons F.A. Cup.

We can still reflect on what has been a good season for Cheadle Town in what has been Terry Hicks and the rest of the Management Team first full season. But if it was a school report; we must do better in certain aspects if we are to succeed next season. But knowing Terry I

am sure he is already thinking and planning for next season as he looks to build a squad that is capable of finishing in the Top Six next season.

Following tonight’s fixture we have two more home fixtures against AFC Darwen this weekend and Chadderton visit us next Tuesday before we finish the season at Atherton Collieries who I’m sure will have a bumper crowd for their last game of the season as they look to claim the title as Champions.

Enjoy the game and see you all again on Saturday.

First prize for the winning team is golfing equipment from the Runcorn professional with prizes also for the runners-up and third-placed team.

Linnets vice-chairman Hedley Edwards, a past captain of Runcorn Golf Club, said: “We are hoping that local businesses will support this venture but we would obviously like to see members of Runcorn and other local golf clubs and societies taking part.

“We would also welcome golfers among our own supporter base who would like to chip in to this very important fundraiser for the football club.

“Runcorn is an attractive and challenging 18-hole course and we are sure that all golfers will enjoy playing it.”

Winsford United - the Blues are hosting a football tournament for local primary schools on Saturday 16th May at the Barton Stadium, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The tournament will be run by the Vale Royal School Sport partnership, with up to 25 teams taking part on the day. The games start at 10 am running through to 3.30 pm, and the club house will be open all day.

Admission prices are £2 for adults, £1 concessions, and 50p for children under 7 years old.

Hanley Town - Town stepped in to help Evo-Stik League neighbours Leek Town to

give them a helping hand in reaching the Staffordshire Senior Cup Final.

Town’s Abbey Lane ground was the venue for Leek’s 1-0 semi-final win over Port Vale, after the original venue of Harrison Park in Leek was waterlogged.

As it turned out, after agreeing to host the fixture, Abbey Lane was also waterlogged on the original date but the game finally went ahead on Thursday 2nd April.

Leek Town Chairman Andy Wain said: “The people at Hanley Town pulled out all the stops to ensure our game went ahead, and I’m grateful for their co-operation which got us out of a tricky situation in terms of fixture congestion”.

The NWCFL Cup Finals are fast approaching and are set to be some

great matches.

Today’s visitors are featuring in both the first being held at Bootle FC on Thursday 23rd April 2015 is The Reusch First Division Cup Final between AFC Darwen v Atherton Collieries.

A week later on Thursday 30th April 2015 will be The Men United Cup Final being held at Curzon Ashton FC which sees Atherton Collieries v Glossop North End. Both teams have heavy schedules before then so should make for an interesting match. We wish all the teams involved the best of luck.

Atherton Collieries Football Club was established in 1916 by miners from the six

pits which were then operative within the old urban district of Atherton. Between 1919 and 1965 they were winners of the Bolton Combination League ten times. They established a noted reputation in Lancashire and by 1964-65 had won the Lancashire Junior Shield six times, a record which is still unsurpassed.

They are affectionately nicknamed ‘The Welfare’, ‘The Miners’ or ‘Sooty’. They play at Alder Street and the much maligned, but recently demolished, main stand was described in David Baukham’s book Dugouts as “leaning forward as if in prayer for its continued survival”.

They joined the Lancashire Combination Division Two in 1950 before leaving in 1952 to play again in the Bolton Combination. They rejoined the Lancashire Combination in 1971 before becoming founder members of the Cheshire County League Division Two in 1978-79. They joined the North West Counties League as founder members in 1982-83, winning the third division in 1986-87.

Steady progress off the pitch, with floodlights being erected in 1994, was matched by progress on the pitch as Colls’ final league position improved season on season. This culminated in promotion to the first division after finishing the 1995-96 season as runners-up to Vauxhall GM.Colls have suffered mixed fortunes during

their tenure in Division One.

Their best season came in 2006-07 when they finished in seventh place under Phil Brown. During 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons Anthony Pilkington made 35 appearances for the club scoring 19 goals. He subsequently has played for Stockport County, Huddersfield Town and Norwich City. The club were relegated at the end of the 2008/09 campaign and Steve Pilling was appointed manager in August 2009. In 2010/11 the club won their first NWCFL silverware for decades when AFC Liverpool were beaten 3-2 (aet) in the First Division Trophy Final. Season 2011/12 saw the club finish fourth in Division one but another trophy was added to the honours board. The Bolton Hospital Cup was won for the first time in twenty five years with a penalty shootout triumph over Eagley. The Reebok final had ended 2-2.

Seasons 2012/13 and 2013/14 saw the team lead the NWCFL First Division in the early stages but fall away towards the end. Steve was a committed servant to the club and in his five seasons at the club the team finished in 6th, 5th, 4th, 4th and 5th position respectively.

Michael Clegg took over the managerial reins at the commencement of the 2014/15 campaign. He had previously enjoyed stints at near neighbours Pennington and Atherton LR and with the help of strong backroom support and local players he is endeavouring to get Atherton Collieries further up the non league pyramid.

Cheadle Town’s play-off hopes look all-but gone after another home

defeat at Park Road - this time to Hanley Town.

It’s still a mathematical possibility, of course, and plenty of footballing miracles have happened in the past. But let’s be realistic here: other teams have got far too many games-in-hand on us and we are running out of matches to do anything about it.

The two goals that killed us came in the last 15 minutes of a rather cagey match.

Before the first one was bundled home on the 75th minute Steve Piggott had made a wonderful save to tip a snap shot from the edge of the box over the bar. From the resulting corner Edwards was at the far post to profit from close range.

Arguably that shouldn’t have been the first goal of the game. After both sides had poked and prodded each other for 39 minutes without any real clear chance Luke Hincks suddenly found himself on the end of a pass at the edge of the box with not a soul around him; perhaps he had too much time to think

as he side footed his effort wide.

Thab Magida looked to be clear six minutes into the second half but the angle died on him after rounding the keeper which gave Hanley the chance to eventually hack the ball to safety.

Hanley’s goal machine Theo Stair was through shortly afterwards but denied by an excellent last-gasp tackle but made absolutely no mistake with minutes to go as he collected a pass, spun his marker and rolled home from close range.

Another chance had already gone begging before that to draw us level, but Matty Kay blazed his shot high and wide after Magida

had driven the ball across the face of goal.

There was time at the end of the match for Piggott to make another fine save, palming the Hanley no7’s effort onto the post and for Magida to see a rasping drive from the edge of the box tipped over the bar.

So, just four matches left to make a statement and finish the season on a high….

Cheadle Town was formed in 1961 as Grasmere Rovers playing in the Manchester &

District Sunday Football League in their Under-16s Division.

As the team developed the Under-21 Championship was won in 1968, followed by the Premier Division title two years later.

In 1972 the club made the significant decision to play their football on Saturdays and joined the Manchester Football League. Success on the playing field coincided with the arrival of Albert Pike as manager in 1978. In Albert’s first, full season he led the team to a terrific double of First Division Champions and Manchester Amateur Cup Winners; this was the prelude to even more success as the club won both the Manchester & Derbyshire F.A. Cups.

Grasmere Rovers moved into their own ground at Park Road Stadium in 1982 and, a year later, changed their name to Cheadle Town when they also joined the North West Counties Football League. Membership has mainly been in the Second Division but in 1996 the club was promoted to the First Division. Sadly, relegation back to the second tier occurred in 2001, a position they still occupy in the now-named First Division. Park Road Stadium has a fine history with, initially, Cheadle Rovers being the owners. On their demise Manchester City used it as their training ground. Portugal, along with Eusebio trained there during the 1966 World Cup and, in 1993, the world-famous Brazilian

player, Jairzinho, hosted a Soccer School for Cheadle Town. Floodlights were installed in 1995 and Manchester United provided the opposition for the official ‘switch-on’ when, on a memorable evening, Town beat United’s youngsters, 3-2 in front of almost 2,000 fans. The biggest gate to watch Cheadle on domestic soil came ten years later against FC United of Manchester. Due to the huge interest in the game Town officials moved the fixture to Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, and they were rewarded with a bumper 3,227 attendance that witnessed a pulsating 3-3 draw. The club is famous for its legendary foreign tours, having played 96 games in 30 different countries in front of over 312,000 fans and scoring 111 goals. Playing under their tour name, Manchester AFC, they have played against SEVEN national sides and once played in front of 65,000 people in Mexico City’s world-famous Aztec Stadium. Their epic journeys have taken them just over 210,000 miles all over the world. Alfredo di Stefano, Ronnie Biggs, Brazilian superstar Jairzinho and Rajiv Ghandi have all met the touring side as exotic locations such as Cannes, Acapulco, Rio de Janeiro, the Bahamas and Phuket have mixed with non-exotic places like Dar es Salaam, Haiti and Guangzhou in China. The club celebrated its 50th birthday in 2011 and, if the next 50 years are anything like the first, then there is a lot of excitement to come.
