When one receives some bits of teaching,
how would he know the advice is wise in living one's life?

Do not go upon what has been acquired by
repeated hearing ,
nor upon tradition ,
nor upon rumor ,

nor upon what is in a scripture, nor upon surmise ,nor upon an axiom ,
nor upon specious reasoning,

nor upon a bias towards a notion that has been pondered over ,
nor upon another's seeming ability ,nor upon the consideration, ‘The monk is our teacher’.

Kalamas, when you yourselves know: "These things are good; these things are not
blamable; these things are praised by the wise; undertaken and observed, these things
lead to benefit and happiness”, enter on and abide in them.

One should think and reflect carefully whether the bits of teaching
or advice given are in line with the following:

1 Should not go against the findings of Science, Medicine, Psychology and other
proven areas of human knowledge.

2 Should be logical and reasonable and not cause negative consequences.

3 Helps to cut one’s endless greed, attachment
and craving for things

4 Helps reduce one’s anger, ill-will, enmity and hatred
towards others

5 Lessens one’s conceit, ego and delusion

6 Helps one to improve in his harmonious relationship
with others

7 Helps one to be more patient, tolerant and understanding

8 Steers one to greater clarity of the mind through better mindfulness

9 Leads one to grow in love, kindness and compassion for the
less fortunate ones

10 Enables one to live with more contentment in the mind

Guides one to live a more peaceful life
