    NEW RECORDS V. D. HEGDE

    ABSTRACT

The paper contains the report of 106 species of 37 genera under 18 tribes of 05 sub families

from Sikkim state and interestingly, identification of earlier collections in National Zoological

collections (NZC) in Zoological Survey of India revealed 02 species are the new reports to

theSikkim state. The Gonocephalum is the dominant genus from this state having 22

speciesfollowed by the genus Laena(14) and Strongylium (07). Further, this compilation revealed

that, in India, 30 species were reported only from Sikkim and 31 species were reported from West

Bengal and Sikkim only showing the richness of Biodiversity of this North Eastern states.

Key words: Check-list, Tenebrionidae, Sikkim, New records.

    I. INTRODUCTION Occurrence of many species of the order Coleoptera are with special ecological requirements

for their continued existence and can be used as indicators of ecological conditions. The family

Tenebrionidae is the fifth largest family under the order Coleoptera and representatives of the family

are found in almost all the habitats. The representatives of this family are hard to differentiate but can

be identified by these characters. Body hard, antennal insertion hidden under frons, elytra usually

completely covering abdomen, abdomen with five visible sternites and first three segments connate,

front coxal cavities closed behind, heteromerous tarsi, tarsal segments and claws simple.

Eventhough there are several studies on the different fauna of Sikkim state (2003)including

somefamilies of Coleoptera by different research workers, no comprehensive report has beendone on

the Darkling Beetles (Coleoptera:Tenebrionidae) of this state. Hence, this compilation was

undertaken to throw some light on the Darkling beetles ofSikkim state by preparing the check-list

with two new records (marked with asterik).

    II. MATERIALS AND METHODS

To make the study comprehensive, all earlier scattered reportswere also taken into

consideration and few important references were noted (Iwan, 2002, Iwan et al 2010, Masumoto and

    Schawaller 2010, Schawaller, 2002, 2006, 2007 a & b, 2009, 2012, Schawaller and Ando, 2006,

2009).The Tenebrionidae collections in theNational Zoological collections, Zoological Survey of

India, Kolkata were also sorted out and identified. The classification was followed as per Bouchard

et al (2005). Theregistration numbers were also given for the materials examined.
