Employee of the MonthJanuary 2018

Jorge Sosa

Jorge Sosa started at The Athenaeum as a dishwasher in 1979 and is now a talented Senior Cook. He has been married to his loving wife, Maria, for 33 years and they are proud parents to Jorge Jr., Daniel, Eduardo, and Maria, and doting grandparents to three grandsons. Jorge enjoys spending time walking his four dogs, gardening, and looks forward to his summer vacation in his hometown, Yucatan, Mexico.

Congratulations, Jorge, for a job well done!

Winter Menus

If you have not yet visited the club recently to try our winter lunch and dinner menus, March is the

time to do it. The winter menus were implemented mid-January. With spring nipping at our heels, the winter menus will soon disappear to welcome spring.

For a light lunch, try the Chopped Salad with tomato, edamame, avocado, garbanzos, and red onions with a coconut-pepita-poblano ranch dressing. Be sure not to miss the Sesame Crusted Ahi Salad which has become one of our best sellers. Want to live dangerously? Then go for the Smoked Pork Belly Sandwich served with sweet potato fries, or, the Pomegranate Braised Beef Short Ribs with roasted sunchokes! How about something different? Octopus Tacos served with an avocado radish salad will do the trick.

Some of my favorites for dinner appetizers are the Salt Creek Mussels and Clams with spicy tomato sauce and grilled bread and the Pan Seared Diver Scallops served with the apple celery leaf salad. There is also the Bucatini with Dungeness Crab, uni lobster sauce, bottarga, parsley and bread crumbs (yum!) Be sure not to miss the Crispy Fried Whole New Zealand Snapper with sesame jasmine rice and a Thai ginger garlic chili sauce. It is absolutely light, wonderful and guilt free! Have a big appetite to end the day? The Wagyu Flat Iron Steak with roasted wild mushrooms and red wine Bordelaise sauce, or, the Cote de Boeuf (for two) will satiate your appetite.

Don’t forget dessert. Our iconic signature dessert, Berries Athenaeum with vanilla bean ice cream, fresh berries and a splash of Grand Marnier, is always a good ending to a meal. Other dessert options include the Pomegranate Cheesecake, Lemon Thyme Cassis Tart and Chocolate Budino to name a few.

Parking, as you know, is very limited here at the club. I would like to remind members that parking in The Athenaeum lot is strictly and only for members dining in the club. Please refrain from parking in The Athenaeum parking lot if you have business somewhere else on the Caltech campus as your vehicle may get ticketed.

I look forward to seeing you at The Athenaeum. Please drop by my office when you are next at the club.

Caltech Playreaders ~ Theater of the Imagination

66th Season: 2017/18Chair: Diana St. James ([email protected]) / Playreaders website: its.caltech.edu/~plays/

Join the Playreaders for semi-staged script-in-hand readings in The Athenaeum Hall of the Associates. Performances run about two hours. No reservations needed for the reading, but are requested for those joining the Playreaders table in the Main Dining Room (626) 395-8200.

Tuesday, March 13, 2018, 7:30 p.m. | The Athenaeum Hall of the Associates Silent Sky, by Lauren Gunderson | Directed by Arden ThomasProduced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

Astronomy was a man’s world in the early twentieth century but Henrietta Leavitt’s (1868-1921) passion to study the heavens procured her an assistantship at Harvard College Observatory. There she made an important discovery that led to the accurate measurements of stars’ and galaxies’ distances from the earth. A story of a journey of scientific and self-discovery.
