Are you taking time to listen to the silence? A few weeks ago the cover story in Time Magazine was “Are kids too wired for their own good?” It talks about how often the new generation of children these days is constantly multi-tasking and how they have so many things going on. When I was a kid (I never thought I would say that), we would sit down and watch TV. The new generation watches TV while IMing with their friends, searching the Internet for more information about the show, and maybe even talking on the phone. Most Americans are guilty of trying to fit as much into their day as possible. Next time you are in the car, count the amount of people you see on their cell phones (not if you are driving though). I have done this a few times and it is about 50% of the people I see. We are all trying to get as much done as possible. The article concludes by saying that the use of all of this technology is not bad. “The problem,” says Hallowell, “is what you are not doing if the electronic moment grows too large.” You are not having family dinners, you are not communicating about your day, you are not taking time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful spring weather. And you are not taking time to listen to the silence. We all need some time each day to just think and be quiet. Take some time to collect our thoughts and contemplate things that have happened. Or maybe you take some time to be thankful for all the gifts you have been given. At camp, we take some time on Sunday evening for vespers, or sit by ourselves, write a letter, or jot down our thoughts in a journal. Isn’t that a great way to end the week and pre- pare for the week to come? My challenge to you is to find some time each day to turn off the electron- ics, disconnect and reflect. It may only be for 5 or 10 minutes but you may be surprised by how nice it is. Take a walk outside and listen to the birds and the wind in the trees. Or ask your other family members to join you and catch up on what is really going on in their lives. Or take the dog for a walk and just watch how excited he/she can get about just being outside. I think I will go get Heidi and give it a try. – Jeff Cheley IN THIS ISSUE... BROOKE AND KURT ANNOUNCE THE ARRIVAL OF “ELLIE”

Named after her grandmotherEleanor “Sis” Cheley, miss Eleanor(Ellie) Marie Klebe arrived safely threeweeks before her due date on December5th 2005. Our bags were not packed forour stay at the hospital, we were in themiddle of making chicken tortilla soupand we were not planning on having ababy that day.

Wow, what a joy it has been to wel-come her into our family. I have workedwith pride for the past ten years to pro-vide the best summer possible for peo-ple’s children. I have never taken thatresponsibility lightly, but to now knowthe intense love that I have for this littlebeing I have an even greater under-standing of the amount of trust it takesfor our camp families to allow us to carefor their children. Thank you.

We are in the beginning of this jour-ney and loving every minute of it. Weclose each day with every unit song andtaps, we sing Kumbaya before naps, andwe can’t wait for the day when sheproudly wears her Blue Kerchief.

CHELEY PACK RAT 9Dear Campers,

Camp is a great place to unplug, unwind and just be yourself for a while. We realize that campers are quite usedto multi-tasking, having busy schedulesand being over stimulated with technol-ogy throughout the day. We strive tomake camp a peaceful place, with plentyof new activities to challenge your brainand your body.

Tips to make the transition smooth:• Bring pre stamped, addressed

envelopes• Bring pictures from home to

decorate your bed• Help pack your bags, so you know

what you have brought.• Put your name on everything so

we can return it to you • Leave valuables or special/one of a

kind items at home

We want to make camp a comfort-able environment so you can focus ontrying new things, making new friendsand challenging yourself everyday. Please let us know how we can help getyou ready for your summer with us.

Last year, we introduced the CheleyConnection and it received wonderfulreviews. We will continue this yearuploading photos and newsletters tokeep parents updated on the happen-ings at camp.

There will also be a feature to allowparents to email their campers. We areexcited about continuing the tradition ofkeeping parents connected to what isgoing on at camp without impacting theexperience for the campers.

CHELEY PACK RAT 12

For over 50 years, Cheley has been hosting a leader-ship camp for student council leaders following our sum-mer camp program. Each year the day after camp ends, student leaders from around the country arrive at campfor four and a half days of intensivetraining on becoming leaders atschool and in life.

Last September, the NationalAssociation of Secondary SchoolPrincipals (NASSP) decided to droptheir national camp program. Wewere sad to see the program discon-tinued and excited about the opportunity to continue theprogram on our own. After encouragement from manyof the Student Council State Executives, Cheley commit-ted to continuing the tradition. We have hired some ofthe most respected Student Council State Executive fromaround the country to help us continue the quality cur-riculum we have provided for years.

This summer the National Leadership Camps will

take place August 9th to August 14th. Instead of hikingand horseback riding, students will spend their days inlarge and small groups packed with insightful discus-sions along with opportunities to meet other leadersfrom around the country. Topics to be covered include:

• goal setting • diversity • teambuilding • communication• conflict resolution • problem solving • self-awareness • and much more • organization This year we are planning to have over 150 high

school students and 100 middle school students attendthe leadership camp.

If you or anyone you know is involved in StudentCouncil and is interested in attending this national pro-gram, please contact us.
