Mo began his graduate studies in organic chemistry in 1995 at the California Institute of Technology with Professor Andrew G. Jacobsen’s group at Harvard University as a Damon Runyon–Walter Winchell Foundation postdoctoral fellow. In 2003, Mo joined the faculty at Massachusetts Institute of Technology where his research group focuses on the total synthesis of complex alkaloids in concert with the discovery and development of new reactions for organic synthesis. Of particular interest is the development of unifying strategies for each alkaloid family of interest guided by biosynthetic hypotheses that enable maximum use of the inherent chemistry of intricate biomimetic intermediates for the rapid assembly of the target’s molecular architecture. These programs are complemented by mechanistic studies and the development of synthetic methodologies of broader interest including general and direct synthesis of important classes of azaheterocycles and new strategies for directed complex fragment assembly. The Movassaghi group’s studies have been recognized by the Dale F. and Betty A. Professor Mohammad Movassaghi

Professor Mohammad Movassaghi (Mo) carried out his undergraduate research with Professor Paul A. Bartlett at the University of California at Berkeley where he received his BS degree in chemistry with honors in 1995. Mo began his graduate studies in organic chemistry in 1995 at the California Institute of Technology with Professor Andrew G. Myers, moved to Harvard University with Professor Myers in 1998, and completed his PhD studies in 2001 as a Roche Predoctoral Fellow. He then joined Professor Eric N. Jacobsen’s group at Harvard University as a Damon Runyon–Walter Winchell Foundation postdoctoral fellow.

2013 Building Future Faculty Program The 2013 Building Future Faculty (BFF) program will be offered by North Carolina State University on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 - Saturday, April 6, 2013. This all-expenses paid workshop is designed for diverse graduate students and post-doctoral students who are seeking a career as a faculty member. Workshop topics include information regarding what to expect as a faculty member, a discussion of the wealth of resources available to faculty for teaching, and expectations of productivity for faculty engaged in research. During the workshop, participants will spend time with current faculty and department chairs in their discipline discussing effective strategies to prepare for an academic career, and the realities of life as a faculty member, as well as receiving personal tips and feedback. This program aims to increase faculty diversity and inclusion, to create faculty that mirrors the increasingly diversified student populations, Past participants had the following things to say about the program:

• The  BFF  program  provided  me  with  a  set  of  new  ideas  that  I  will  use  as  a  framework  for  preparing  and  positioning  myself  to  be  a  competitive  faculty  candidate.  

• This  experience  has  certainly  prepared  me  for  the  job  market  as  a  future  faculty  member.  The  knowledge  I  have  gained  and  the  contacts  that  I  have  acquired  have  been  invaluable.  I  would  recommend  this  program  to  anyone  pursuing  a  career  in  academia.
