By CarThe Trans Canada Highway goes from one end of Vancouver Island to the other. The entrance to Chemainus is prominently set along the high-way so visitors from the northern and southern portions of the Island can just take a picturesque drive, take in the views and make their way to Chemainus year-round.

By FerryVisitors can come to Vancouver Island by ferry and drive or take one of the public transit options to Chemainus. There is daily ferry service between Tsawwassen and Victoria and between Vancouver and Nanaimo. There are bus and taxi options to travel to and from ferry terminals. Rich history, culture and unique shopping and dining experi-ences come together in Chemainus — a vibrant town just

minutes off the Trans Canada Highway on Vancouver Island.Chemainus is a town where rich history and culture easily

flirt with modern conveniences and lifestyles.Winding along the coast of the Pacific Ocean and sur-

rounded by breathtaking farmlands and rising mountains, this is a town with something to offer everyone.

The community of about 4,100 is located about 30 minutes south of Nanaimo and about an hour north of Victoria.

The town is perhaps best known for its beautiful murals, which are painted on buildings and which showcase the town's rich history. More than 50,000 visitors come to take in the sights each year.

Chemainus is the perfect place to relax with the family, escape on a romantic weekend or get away from the every-day.

The town offers plenty of shopping opportunities at locally-owned businesses.

Stop by a cozy restaurant or drop into a bakery for a quick coffee break — or take your coffee to the beach or Waterwheel Park. Enjoy spa services or a round of golf. Take in a world-class show at the Chemainus Theatre Festival or explore the Chemainus Valley Museum and absorb the com-munity’s history.

Dreaming towards the future often means looking back into the past.

In the early part of 1963, a small group of friends gathered around a kitchen table and talked of how they could preserve the history of Chemainus.

This group was the start of the Chemainus Valley Historical Society. By Aug. 7, 1963, they were offi cially incorporated and under the Society Act were responsible for Chemainus and Surrounding District. By the end of that year, there were 23 active members preserving the history of the area.

From 1963 until the early 1980s, all the letters, papers, photos and artifacts were stored in many members’ basements. As the fi rst and oldest members started to die, items were being lost with estates changing hands. The remaining members started to look at developing one site in which to store all the information gathered in the basements. A house was donated but not the land, so behind the scenes, many discussions were being carried out, trying to fi nd the best site for this house.

Before a site could be found, tragedy struck in the form of fi re. The house was lost, and the group was back to looking for both a site and a building. Within the group, it was decided that they would approach one of their own members, MacMillan Lumber Company, and ask that a portion of Waterwheel Park be allowed to have a museum building erected. After everyone was satisfi ed the museum could be built on the old site of the manager’s house, serious planning started to take shape.

By 1990, funds had been raised to build the new museum, and in 1991, with much fanfare, the ground was cut. The new Chemainus Valley Museum opened in the summer of 1991, leaving many basements clean again. Over the next two decades, there was continuous growth within the museum, until now the shelves are overfl owing to the point of bursting.

At the beginning of the new millennium, discussions were taking place that the society needed a bigger museum. With research and debates, a new plan emerged, and an expansion proposal was discussed.

After a couple of years of hard work, changes in ideas and fi nding resources, the Chemainus Valley Historical Society now stands in the position to move forward and is aiming at many fundraisers, grant requests and all donations welcomed.

The hopes and dreams are to have twice as much space with little impact on the parkland. The society hopes the people of Chemainus will support its museum in any way they can.

The Chemainus Valley Historical Society gladly invites everyone to come and attend our Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Queen’s reign.

In admiration of Her Majesty's governing of the Commonwealth, our society will be giving a time-honoured English tea June 2 from 1-4 p.m. at Waterwheel Park.

We will be serving an afternoon British tea, and there will be old-time British music playing in the background. You may fi nd the Queen or other members of the royal family circulating amongst the visitors. Isabel Askew has graciously consented to attend and welcome the Queen to our lovely town. We invite everyone to embrace this event and come with suitable headdress honouring the Queen's love of hats.

The fi rst visit to Chemainus by the Queen was in 1951. Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, during their provincial visits in 1951, spent many days on Vancouver Island, including a short visit to Chemainus. Many of the local people were making the often-repeated comment “Isn’t she lovely.” Even today, you can fi nd some of the older residents in Chemainus who remember this visit.

The second visit was planned in 1959. The town was prepared and waiting, and then the people were told the Queen would not be stopping in Chemainus. Many people were upset and wondered why she decided to bypass Chemainus. Later, it was announced that the Queen was

pregnant, and the people of Chemainus were relieved.During the garden party, there will be

displays showing how the Queen has infl uenced the area. We will have picture

displays of the royal visit to Chemainus. In honour of the Queen,

we will have many displays centered on the royal family and their visits to Vancouver Island.

From early June to early September, the parking lot of Waterwheel Park in Chemainus becomes a hub of

activity, as people gather to celebrate everything that can be grown, produced and made locally during the Chemainus Wednesday Farmers Market.

Each Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., this intimate little market provides a venue for 38 vendors to sell local and regional farm produce, fl owers, baking, sweets and crafts.

together in Chemainus.Just look at the outside of the

building you're standing next to. There's a good chance it is cov-ered in colourful art showcasing the town's rich history.

Chemainus has become world famous for its murals. Celebrat-ing local history, people, faces and works of art, these pieces are sub-jected to the elements and stand as testaments to the strength and positive energy of the people who call this place home.

The fi rst murals appeared on Chemainus' buildings in the early 1980s when it was decided that a revitalization project was needed to bring people to the town. From a fi rst, tentative idea a dream was born. The fi rst suggestions of painting fl owers on building walls turned into painting the history of the town on the walls.

There are now more than 40 murals and 10 sculptures through-out town, and Chemainus has built a world-class reputation around its art.

One exciting new project is set to shine the spotlight even brighter on Chemainus.

The Chemainus Festival of Murals has unveiled plans for a striking, 45-foot-high major art project paying tribute to iconic Canadian artist Emily Carr.

The fi nished project will tower 45 feet high and span 20 feet wide. This one-of-a-kind MuralSculpture — so called as it combines sculpture and murals — will be the fi rst of its kind in the world. Surrounded by water,

which will appear to be fl owing out of the installment itself, it will feature a First Nations Thun-derbird at its highest peak. The fi nished product will tower 45 feet high and span 20 feet wide.

Chemainus is accustomed to welcoming people from all over the world, who come to town to view the beautiful murals and sculptures. And this fall, the town will welcome the world for a very special event, as Chemainus hosts the Global Mural Conference September 10-15.

The conference will focus on creating a competitive edge in economic development and tourism, and it is aimed at muralists, economic development executives, painters, artists, tour-ism boards, municipal CEOs and decision-makers, creative individu-als, federal and provincial govern-ment staff members, architects, designers and graphic artists — in short, nearly everyone.

Discover an abundance of local artArts and culture are very important in Chemainus.

You can see that on the outside of the buildings that are covered with the town's famous murals, but it's just as obvious

inside many of those spaces.

Art lovers always make sure to stop at the Chemainus Theatre Festival. The theatre displays different artwork upstairs near

the Playbill Dining Room and houses a gift shop that sells original artwork from more than 100 artisans from across B.C..

The Pottery Store, located on Willow Street, showcases numerous pieces

from different potters on Vancouver Island and also invites guests to show

their work.

For more handmade artwork, visit Sheryl Sawchuk's gallery and studio on

Croft Street.

The Wednesday Market in the Waterwheel Park parking lot is also a great

place to fi nd local artwork. The market runs every Wednesday from 11 a.m.

until 4:30 p.m. from June to September.

Looking to make art? Bring out your inner artist by painting your own pot-

tery at the Crafty Cuppa Ceramic Studio and Gourmet Café, which is now

located on Chemainus Road. Choose your pre-moulded ceramic piece, pick

your colours and get painting. When you're done, they'll glaze and fi re your

work — and you can admire it for years after.

Leaving the downtown core, there are plenty of home-based artists

from Saltair to Crofton who open their homes to those looking for unique

pieces in the Cowichan Valley. If you are in Crofton, Lito's Café displays and

sells work from local artisans and painters.

Diving

The only essentially fully intact Boeing 737 artificial reef in the world lies off the coast of Chemainus.

And that's only one of the unique opportunities divers can take advan-tage of as they explore the Salish Sea and the area around Chemainus with guided diving trips through 49th Parallel Dive Charters.

The Boeing 737 — which is 100 feet long and 100 feet wide from wing tip to wing tip — is home to about 120 marine species, including everything from bryozoans and hydroids to fish and octopus, explained dive master Peter Luckham.

"On any given dive we do there these days, on a single day, you can see 50-60 species," he said.

Luckham and the Artificial Reef Society of BC purposely sank the plane in January 2006.

"It's been down there six years now, and it's showing very little signs of any deterioration," he said.

Luckham says the Boeing attracts scuba divers from around the world."It's one of these things that ends up on a diver's bucket list," he said,

adding a lot of former pilots, flight attendants and engineers like to come explore the sunken plane.

Luckham takes people diving all year round. The plane is a major draw, but they also explore historic shipwrecks in Gabriola Pass and Porlier Pass.

found along our boundary and, in some cases, in the very heart of the town — if you can tear yourself away from the unique experiences of our commercial centre. Pack a lunch, grab your map and get exploring.

Chemainus Lake — This place is perfect for dog walking and has a dock for fishing. The lake is well-stocked. Circle the lake in half an hour and explore two different types of forest.

Trans Canada Trail — The nation-long trail has spread into the Cowichan Valley, including Chemainus. According to Trails BC, the trail follows the Trans Canada Highway to Herd Road, the entrance point to Crofton. From there, the trail goes along York Avenue and Chaplin Street to connect with Crofton Road. That road connects with Chemainus Road, which goes into Chemainus. Askew Creek Wilderness Trail — This trail is accessible from Oak Street in Chemainus. There are eight kilometres of trails to wander and view flora and fauna, including some of the largest Douglas firs in North Cowichan.

Fuller Lake — Fuller Lake offers fishing, boating, tennis, swimming and more. There is room for a picnic, and you can spots lots of wildlife.

If you want to pick up something for your garden or need some garden tips, stop by Sandpiper Garden Centre.

Take a stroll from downtown south along Chemainus Road, and you will fi nd seven original Mill Houses dating back to the late 19th century.

If you are looking for something for Fido, stop by Sonshine Flowers — in addition to fresh fl owers, they carry a line of “doggie stuff.”

Continue walking to the Silvermine on Chemainus Road at the corner of River Road, and you will be rewarded with some of the best B.C. native silver art and other hand-carved jewelry.

A trip to Chemainus wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Vancouver Island Soap Factory. This unique facility on Oak Street includes a bright and cheery retail outlet and the factory, where fabulous natural and organic soaps, lotions, hair care and body care products are created.

Saltspring Soapworks recently opened a new store on Willow Street and offers its artisan soaps and body care products, all made by hand with natural ingredients.

20th AnniversaryIt's a season of celebration, as the Chemainus

Theatre Festival turns 20 in 2012.

"It's our 20th anniversary, so we tried to bring

in a lot of big shows for us; we're using a lot of

professionals this season with shows with large

casts," says artistic director Mark DuMez. "We

brought back a few shows that were crowd-

pleasers in the early years. This season also fea-

tures a lot of partnerships with theatres in B.C.

It's a very musical season and a lot of comedy,

very festive because it's our 20th anniversary.

"As far as themes go, we are looking for

shows that enrich the human spirit, and I think

this season has a lot of shows that celebrate

that."

The 274-seat theatre welcomes about 70,000

visitors a year to its various shows.

People come for the productions, but also for

the atmosphere — to see the grand building

and its art gallery featuring local art, and to

experience the buffet dinners at the Playbill

Dining Room, which are themed toward the

production on stage.

Shows typically run between Wednesday and

Sunday, with one to two shows for those days,

including matinees. Tickets can be purchased

right up until 15 minutes before the curtain

rises.

The Chemainus Theatre Festival's 20th-anni-

versary season will be full of highlights.

The theatre will welcome its one-millionth

patron sometime this year.

As well, the Chemainus Theatre Festival will

produce its 100th show this season.

"Thinking about our 20th anniversary and this

season, it's amazing the Chemainus Theatre

Festival has been able to do what it has for 20

years," said DuMez. "It's an amazing amenity to

have on Vancouver Island for the various com-

munities it serves. Hitting 20 is quite something

for an arts organization, particularly in this

environment, so we're real thankful for the

people who've been patrons and sponsors and

supported the theatre."

In the past 20 years, the festival has welcomed

hundreds of professional actors and designers

to its stage, created 29 new plays and adapta-

tions and produced 50 Canadian works.

DuMez is entering his third season as artistic

director of the Chemainus Theatre Festival. He

has been with the company for more than 12

years, beginning as an actor and then becoming

an artistic associate and now artistic director.

"It's a great place," he said. "We look forward

to many more years of stability and hope to

bring joy and inspiration to lots more people."

Crofton

Visitors in Chemainus will fi nd it is a quick drive to Crofton. It is accessible from Chemainus and from the Trans Canada Highway.

Crofton is located off the Trans Canada Highway on the southeast coast of Vancouver Island, eight kilometres north of Maple Bay and 11 kilometres south of Chemainus. The village can be reached by taking the scenic drive down Chemainus Road to Crofton Road, which turns into Chaplin Street.

Crofton is the gateway to Salt Spring Island, a popular desti-nation known for its local arts. The ferry terminal is located in Crofton, and Salt Spring Island is only a 20-minute ride away.

Getting here

What to do• Visit the Old School House Museum. This one-room school

was built in 1905, and it operated until 1948. Discover Crofton’s history through pioneer and smelter displays and artifacts. There is also information about the school when it was used as such.• Explore Osborne Bay Regional Park, or take a picnic and relax

at the park. Clam on the beach at Osborne Bay (if there are no harvesting restrictions), fish and view wildlife like sea lions or Orcas. • Take a scenic walk long the boardwalk, which begins at the

Park, Mt. Richards and Mt. Prevost.• Fish at some of the neighbouring water holes, like Quamichan

Lake, Somenos Lake and Fuller Lake. Those who prefer fishing in saltwater would be well-served to visit the Sansum Narrows, between Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island.

Visit Crofton for its charmVisit Crofton for its charmThis quaint village has an interesting past dating back to

the 19th century.The original townsite of Osborne Bay was homesteaded

by a small number of families in the mid-1800s. Timber and farming were the main economic areas.

At the turn of the century, Australian-born Henry Croft developed a mine at Mount Sicker. By 1902, his mine was producing plenty of ore, and Croft bought Osborne Bay to build a copper smelter and house his employees. When copper prices plummeted, the mine closed and the town was supported by logging and fishing. A large pulp mill was built in 1956.

Nowadays, visit Crofton for its village charm, breathtaking views and fantastic recreation. While visiting, enjoy swimming, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing, or peruse the town on foot and pop into the charming shops.

ational opportunities.Thetis Island is one of the smaller, less-travelled Gulf

Islands. It is just a short ferry ride from Chemainus — don't forget to ask the ferry attendant for a map of Thetis Island showing roads, local businesses and attractions.

Thetis Island — which got its name from HMS Thetis (itself named after Thetis the Neriad, a sea nymph daughter of Zeus), a British 36-gun frigate that was on the Pacifi c station from 1851 to 1853 and surveyed the area — is a small community of about 350 full-time residents, which expands to between 1,000 and 2,000 during the fi ne weather seasons. All community services except the school are provided by volunteers.

A Mediterranean combination of mild winters and warm, dry summers supports the unique ecosystem of Thetis Island and provides an ideal environment for outdoor recreation. Come discover delightful rural scenes, beautiful shorelines, crystal-clear waters and wonderful views.

Thetis is especially popular in the summertime, when you can take advantage of diverse recreational opportunities including scuba diving, fi shing, swimming, sailing, cruising. kayaking, bird watching and hiking.

Local arts and crafts, seasonal produce, preserves and more are featured during the summer market, held Sunday mornings at Telegraph Harbour Marina. The island also has a number of artists, gift shops and a nursery.

While visiting the island, stroll the docks at Telegraph Harbour Marina, explore their gift shop and enjoy lunch at the bistro or their vintage soda fountain.

Boat moorage is available at two marinas in Telegraph Harbour. You can buy groceries at both marinas and fi nd a liquor outlet, post offi ce and bank machine on the island.

Planning to stay over? Be sure to book accommodation in advance at one of the island's many B&Bs, as space is limited, and there are no campgrounds.
