Having recognized that Chemical sciences have con-

tributed much to the humanity in all walks of life,

Internaonal Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry

(IUPAC) in 2006 started iniaves to secure a des-

ignaon of an Internaonal Year of Chemistry by

United Naons Educaonal Scienc Cultural Orga-

nizaon (UNESCO). The project carried out by IUPAC

with this aim was completed in 2008 and subse-

quently the execuve board of UNESCO endorsed

the proposal for declaraon by United Naons (UN)

of 2011 as Internaonal Year of Chemistry.

UN recognized that Chemistry and allied elds had

contributed much to the beerment of human life

on this planet and they are vital to achieve the mil-lennium goals of UN. Obviously, this understanding

led to the organizing of celebraons of IYC 2011 by

IUPAC, UNESCO and UN as global partners along

with Chemical Sociees, Industries, and Educaonal

and Research Instutes across the globe Year 2011

coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel

Prize awarded to Madam Marie Curie. The year also

is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Inter-

naonal Associaon of Chemical Sociees, providing

a chance to highlight the benets of internaonal

    scienc collaboraon.

All over the world, the year 2011 is being celebrat-

ed as the Internaonal Year of Chemistry with the

    theme Chemistry-Our life, Our future.

    IYC 2011 celebraons envisaged the

    following objecves:

Increase the public appreciaon of chemistry

    in meeng world needs

Increase interest of young people in chemis-

    try

Generate enthusiasm of the creave futureof chemistry

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Nobel

Prize awarded to Madam Marie Curie

YIC, one of the premier instutes of the Kingdom ofSaudi Arabia realized the mulfaceted opportuni-es available through the acve parcipaon of the

global event of the celebraon of the Internaonal

Year of Chemistry2011. The instute took the bold step

to make this an occasion to showcase its potenals tothe internaonal organizaons like IUPAC, UNESCO,

UN and similar other reputed agencies while focusing

    on the following important objecves.

Make YIC to emerge as a hub for educaonal, re-

search and industrial consultancies at local and na-

    onal levels.

Establish strong links with local industries, reputed

universies and internaonal organizaons of sci-

ence and technology for collaborave and mutu-

    ally enriching programs and projects

Establish the high prole of the instute at inter-

naonal levels and become one of the leaders of

educaon in science and technology, in the King-

dom of Saudi Arabia and guide the naon towards

    sustainable development.

Enlighten the public the need of safe use and dis-

posal of chemicals and on green manufacturing

    processes.

YIC community decided to take this opportunity to

bring the neighboring academic instutes, universi-

es, industrial establishments and the local public under one umbrella to achieve the targeted objecves

YIC strongly believed that the parcipaon would

bring some benets in the immediate future and in the

long run. Some of the immediate benets the instute

    counted on are:

An awakening among the YIC students and the

Young generaon at large in the Kingdom of Saud

    Arabia towards learning chemical sciences.

Exposing the young generaon to the enormous

    opportunies in chemical industry.

Aract more students to YIC with great enthusi-

    asm.

A prole of the instute that prominently appears

    at the internaonal scenario.

    Organizing commiee

Under the patronages of Dr. Ahmed Dabroom, the General Director of Instutes and colleges of the Royal com-

mission for Yanbu, and Dr. Gasim Alandjani, Deputy Managing Director of YIC, an organizing commiee was

formed with Dr.Ahmed Al-Ghamdi , Head, Department of Chemical Engineering Technology (CHET) as Chairman

and Dr.E.P.Jagadeesh, Asst.Prof (CHET) as convener, and an execuve commiee.

As a rst step the organizing commiee prepared

a tentave program for the whole year of 2011

throughout which IYC celebraons would connue.

The programs included seminars, webinars, public lec-

tures, campaigns for safe use and disposal of chemicals

and protecon of environment, community outreachprograms, factory visits, open house and exhibion,

Lab visits for school children, educaonal movie shows,

skits on history of chemistry, contests for students and

webinars. The plan of acvies was communicated to

the IYC Panel in February for approval. Soon YIC got

its plan of acvies approved and this gave YIC many

privileges. Some of them include rights for posng our

acvies at the IYC site, the authorized use of the logos

of IUPAC, UNESCO, IYC etc., and the educaonal mov-

ies produced by parcipang industries and chemical

    sociees.

The IYC panel frequently expressed its sasfacon and

appreciaon of the YIC acvies. YIC emerged proudly

as one and the only instute in the Kingdom that con-

ducted a variety of acvies bringing together the col-

lege students, school students, eminent sciensts, pro-

fessors, technocrats, manufacturers and the common

public in comparison with the 50 and odd number of

parcipants registered at the IYC site from within the

    Kingdom including some prominent universies.

    Chemiluminescence 2011
