Description of Curriculum and Requirements

1. Requirements Regarding the Selection of Courses in Various Areas

(1) English: At the beginning of the first year all freshmen are to take English proficiency examination organized by the university. According to their scores, students are assigned to English courses of different levels with a total of six credits. The sophomores are to take four credits in the extended level of English courses, and those who can not pass the CET-4 are required to take the

“Advanced English” course, with total 10 credits.

(2) College Level Computer Basics: All freshmen shall take computer skill test organized by the university. Those who have met the proficiency requirement can obtain two credits and do not have to take the course.

(3) Basic Broad-based (Common) Courses: During the first seven semesters, all students should take 12 credits in this area, including 6 credits in “Natural Science and Technology”, “Cultural Traditions”, “Art and Society”, “World Civilization”, plus two credits in courses about economics and management.

(4) Optional Courses in the Major Area: Students should take a minimum of six credits in the 7th semesters in the major area.

2. Description and Requirements of Practical Training

(1) Measurement and Control Practice: This training will take one week and will be offered in the 3rd semester to provide students a sound comprehension of control techniques and measurement methods for developing hands-on skills. This program is designed and also evaluated by the Engineering Workshop.

(2) Practice in Workshop: This training will take two weeks and will be given in the 4th semester to equip students with the basic knowledge of machining and engineering practice. This program is designed and also evaluated by the Engineering Workshop.

(3) Course Project: This design training takes two weeks to complete toward the end of the 6th semester. It is meant to bridge the gap between the course “Principles of Chemical Engineering” and actual design practice with respect to design of process system or installation. After completed, the students should be able to apply their academic knowledge in solving relevant engineering problems.

(4) Engineering Internship: After the completion of the 4th semester and the 6th semester, students are given engineering internship to understand the chemical technology in practice, product design, research and development and management as well. After completion, the evaluations will be organized by the department.

(5) Final Project (Thesis): The thesis work is allowed 16 weeks to complete in the 8th semester. The purpose of this training is to equip students with basic skills and methodology in scientific research or engineering design. Upon the completion of theses, the school and the individual department will organize oral defense examinations.

(6) Project Design: This extracurricular program is to be conducted in the 6th through 7th semester. Under the guidance of supervisors, students are to be organized in groups to do engineering design, scientific research and/or competition, etc. The project can be chosen by students or assigned by the supervisors. The purpose is to cultivate independent thinking and innovation, team work and hands-on abilities among students. Upon the completion of projects, the supervisor will coordinate to evaluate the work products.

3. Bilingual Courses Each student should take at least one bilingual course. 4. Extracurricular Practice (8 credits) The extracurricular practice is to be arranged by the Department of Student Affairs.
