What you will study

Flexible degree structureAll of our Chemical Engineering degrees (except our Industrydegree) cover the same study programme for the first threeyears. This means that transfer between our degrees(except the Industry degree) is possible up to the end ofStage 3 should you find your interests change, providing youachieve the appropriate academic standard.

Transfer to or from our Industry degree is also possible upto the end of Stage 2, providing you achieve the appropriateacademic standard.

Core curriculum (first three years)We introduce you to core engineering, maths and scienceprinciples underpinning the design of a chemical engineeringprocess plant.

You will learn everything from controlling chemical reactionrates to using specialist computer software to solvechemical and process engineering problems.

Study topics include:

• how to perform, measure, analyse and manipulatechemical reactions

• basic types of mass, heat and momentum transfer• the design criteria for heat exchangers and other plant

equipment used in process plants

In the third year you bring all this knowledge together todesign a process plant in a team.

Fourth year (MEng only)If you are studying an MEng degree, you take specialistmodules in your fourth year - see the Course Details.

Boost your employability with a work placementApply to spend 9 to 12 months on anoptional work placement between Stages 2 and 3. Youcan apply to spend your placement year with anyorganisation and will receive University support to do so.

You’ll gain first-hand experience of working in the sector,putting your learning into practice and developing yourprofessional expertise.

It will extend your degree by a year and is subject toavailability, however it isn't available if you're spending ayear studying abroad.

Work Placement (optional)

You can apply to spend 9 to 12 months on an optionalwork placement between Stages 2 and 3. You can applyto spend your placement year with any organisation andwill receive University support to do so. It will extend yourdegree by a year and is subject to availability. The entrance requirements below apply to 2019 entry.

Advice on Maths and Science requirementsIf you don’t think you will have the exact Mathematics andScience qualifications referred to in our entry requirementsby the time you need them, you may not be sure what todo.  We hope that the following will help.

• If you already have, or are taking, the A level (orequivalent) Maths and Science qualifications specified inour entry requirements, you should apply for stage 1(First Year) entry of the engineering degree course inwhich you are interested

• If you have a Maths qualification but will not have it at Alevel (or equivalent) when you start your degree, youshould apply for the relevant degree with FoundationYear.  We may give you the opportunity to take theNewcastle University Pre-Entry Maths Course* and theoption to start in First Year if we think that this will be thebest route for you

• If you have A level Maths (or equivalent) already but not atthe required grade, you should contact us for advice. We may decide that you could be considered forFoundation Year entry, or it may be that our engineeringcourses are not the best options for you

• If you will not have the equivalent of an A level in theScience subject (if any) required, you should apply for therelevant degree with Foundation Year.

If you are still not sure, do not worry.

Whatever you apply for, our Admissions Tutors will help youdecide which is the best route for you.  They may thereforemake you an offer for a different course (e.g. FoundationYear entry instead of First Year entry) from the one youapply for.

(*The Newcastle University Pre-Entry Maths Course aims toprovide the requisite mathematical skills and conceptsneeded on our engineering degree courses and to preparestudents for the modes of learning they will encounter.  Thematerials for the course are delivered electronically andinclude opportunities to practise your skills.  You study thematerials in your own time and, when you are ready, youbook your exam with the Engineering School to which youhave applied.   A fee of £150 is payable at the time ofbooking the exam or shortly before the date set forexamination.)

A LevelsAAA including Mathematics and Chemistry and excludingGeneral Studies and Critical Thinking. For Biology,Chemistry and Physics A levels, we require a pass in thepractical element. GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science(minimum Grade B or 6) required if Physics not offered at Alevel.

Scottish QualificationsAAA at Advanced Higher including Mathematics andChemistry. Grade B in Higher Physics if not offered atAdvanced Higher.  Two Highers at the required grade (indifferent subjects to those offered at Advanced Higher) mayreplace a third Advanced Higher.

Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

International Baccalaureate37 points with Mathematics and Chemistry at Higher Levelgrade 6 or above. Physics required at Standard Level grade5 or above if not offered at Higher Level.

Irish Leaving CertificateCandidates will normally only be considered for foundationyear entry. Applications will be considered on an individualbasis.

Access QualificationsIn relevant area of engineering or physical science. Mustinclude 45 level 3 credits at Distinction, including at least 30level 3 credits in maths and chemistry. GCSE Physics orDual Award Science (minimum grade B or 6) required ifPhysics not offered at a higher level.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National ExtendedDiploma/OCR Cambridge Technical Level 3Extended DiplomaCandidates will be considered for Foundation Year entry.Please see Engineering with Foundation Year for specificentrance requirements.

Cambridge Pre-UD3,D3,D3 in Principal Subjects including Mathematics andChemistry. GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimumGrade B or 6) required if Physics not offered at a higherlevel.

Extended Project QualificationWe welcome applications from students offering anExtended Project and value the skills of research andindependent learning that it is designed to develop.  If youoffer an Extended Project, it will be taken into account aspart of your application profile, but we will not usuallyinclude it in offer conditions for this degree programme.

This will provide you with the knowledge you need toprogress to one of our three- or four-year ChemicalEngineering degrees.

English Language RequirementsApplicants whose first language is not English require aminimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
