Ozone gas (O3) is a powerful oxidizer and disinfectant. Its oxidation

potential is 150% higher compared to chlorine products. Ozone is a natural gas that oxidizes approximately 600 to 3000 times faster than any other chemical product. Ozone does not only eliminate bacteria, but also viruses and other microbiological organisms, leaving nothing but oxygen (O

2),

and water after the disinfection process. Due to its oxidation mechanism, microbiological organisms cannot become resistant to ozone.

Ozone has the additional advantage that hazardous biocides or chemicals are no longer required in the process. Ozone regenerates into harmless oxygen which leaves no chemical residues in the process water making it possible to recycle the water multiple times.

COOLING WATER DISINFECTIONOpen cooling tower systems and heat exchangers recycle water for heat exchanging and are susceptible to pollution. This is caused by bio fouling, scaling and corrosion which all can bring the system to a hold. In addition to this, the system is also in danger of legionella outbreaks which are harmful and fatal for human beings. The application of ozone in combination with the integrated water management program, guarantees a continuous disinfected water system that is safe, sustainable, energy efficient and chemical free.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRYProcess water used for pasteurization or sterilization need to be free of any bacterial activity at any time to guarantee food safety. The presence of heated water and product spills in process water is an ideal environment for bacterial growth. Ozone eliminates bacteria and has the additional advantage that hazardous (not food safe) biocides or chemicals are no longer required in the process. Ozone regenerates to harmless natural oxygen and leaves no chemical residues in the process water.

CLEAN IN PLACE BY REUSING CONDENSATE WATER

Producers of milk powder treat their condensate water normally as wastewater. Besides the environmental impact, this flow creates unnecessary costs because of the freshwater usage as well as the water discharge costs. By disinfection this flow can be reused as CIP water resulting into a green and sustainable solution.

Challenge Disinfecting condensate water can be used to clean in place. As water streams in the dairy industry typically are high on pH, conventional chemical disinfectants like hypochlorite are not applicable. An alternative chemical disinfectant like chlorine dioxide would result in high consumption cost and a complex make-up system. The use of chemicals requires handling and storage, therefore leading to hazardous situations.

INTEGRATED WATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

The Nijhuis Integrated Water Management Program ensures the lowest water footprint as well as the most optimal water quality. The water management program is a custom build service and consists of a 24/7 remote monitoring program and helpdesk, onsite inspection, maintenance support, analyses and reporting consults how to operate installations at the lowest possible total cost of ownership.

The NI Connect module is developed by Nijhuis to guarantee a secure link in between the installation on site and the Nijhuis Control Room to manage the process.

24/7 REMOTE i-MONITORING PROGRAMNijhuis provides a remote 24/7 monitoring of the water treatment installation on site to control and to improve the performance and to decrease operational cost. This program also includes direct action on notifications from the installation as well as troubleshooting by experts.

The performance of the system will be reported frequently to provide a complete overview including trend analyses, sample data and consults by experts.

INSPECTION / ANALYSES SERVICESInspection of any water treatment installation is essential to check whether the system performs optimally and produces in compliance with the legislation. The inspections are frequently carried out by trained Nijhuis service engineers. Inspection activities include amongst others calibration of sensors, check on equipment functionality and status, sampling and analyses of chemical and biological characteristics of the water. The data, the conclusions and advices are summarized in a comprehensive report and archived according to the legislation.

Air conditioning systems and industrial processes use heat exchangers for cooling or heating purposes of their process water or gas. Water based cooling systems suffer from fouling of the tubes of the heat exchangers leading to a reduction in efficiency and increased power consumption, and consequently higher operating cost. Heat exchangers are considered to be one of the largest power consumers in power, food & beverage, chemical, oil & gas and pulp & paper plants. In cases where surface water is used as cooling medium the Nijhuis Automatic Tube Cleaning system is the ultimate solution to keep the installation in optimal condition and at the lowest possible costs.

The efficiency of a heat exchanger will reduce significantly because of fouling and scaling of the heat exchanger tubes. Research indicates that a fouling layer of only 0.6 mm on heat exchanger tubes reduces the heat transfer efficiency by 34% and results in a higher power consumption of 21%. Conventional methods like the dosing of chemicals fail to fulfill sustainability and economical goals. Regular manual cleaning requires shut down of the process for a longer period and immediately after biofouling will start to build up again. EXTEND HEAT EXCHANGER LIFETIME

APPLICATION AND WORKING OF THE SYSTEM The Nijhuis Automatic Tube Cleaning system comprises a unique Nijhuis 4 way flow diverter and a Nijhuis cleaning set of one brush and two baskets for each tube of the heat exchanger. The flow diverter is positioned in the piping to and from the heat exchanger. It is custom designed for various piping configurations for ease of installation and a pressure drop lower than 0.2 bar. This unique flow diverter allows for periodic flow reversal through the heat exchanger at pre-set times, without reducing or stopping the flow through the heat exchanger and without taking the heat exchanger out of service or interrupting its operation. When the flow is reversed the brush will move to the other side of the tube by of forced rotating cleaning action.
