Fine ceramic usedin internal gear

The Iwaki G series chemical pump isthe first internal gear pump designedfor chemical process applications, inwhich gears of fine ceramic (SiC andSilicon nitride) are used.Our pump technology, developed overmore than 30 years, has made it pos-sible for Iwaki to equip standardpumps with fine ceramic gears.Without detracting from any of theadvantages of conventional internalgear pumps abrasion resistance,chemical resistance, low-viscositycharacteristics and sealing character-istics have been remarkably improved.In addition to the glandpacking/mechanical seal type (ModelGX), magnetic drive sealless type(Model GM) are available as standardproducts for an expanded range ofuses.The G series is an advanced gearpump, capable of dealing with a widerange of industrial processes whichcontinue to increase in sophistication.

Chemical gear pumps

Both high viscosity and low vis-cosity liquids can be handledWhen a low-viscosity liquid is handledby a conventional gear pump, "jam-ming" and "seizing" tend to occur. SiCceramic gears do not have this prob-lem even when the pump functions ata high speed. Silicon nitride ceramicgears show stable performance inhandling high viscous liquids, due totheir strength and toughness.

Ability to handle fine slurriesNow that gears and other slidingcomponents including bearings aremade of ceramic, the handling of fineslurries hard and soft will not impairthe longevity of these pumps. Do notspecify GM type for slurry applica-tions.

Magnetic drive type added tostandard lineSuperior anticorrosive materials suchas silicon carbide, silicon nitride, alu-mina ceramic, PTFE, carbon andstainless steel are used in liquid endsso that all sorts of chemical liquidscan be handled. GM is ideal for han-dling chemical liquids which needstrict control on liquid leakage and aircontact.

Improved performance charac-teristicsPerformance has been noticeablyimproved. Ceramic gears make itpossible to reduce spaces betweenparts, therefore outperforming con-ventional metal gear models.

Quiet liquid transfer with lesspulsationWithout the pulsation that is com-mon to reciprocating pump and gen-eral use type gear pumps, liquid istransferred quietly and smoothly noagitating or foaming.

High self-priming abilityBecause the suction port is at the topof the pump, the pump chamberremains full when pump stops work-ing. Self-priming is enhanced at re-start.

Constant flow injectionRegardless of the temperaturechange, viscous liquid can be han-dled at accurate flow rate, which cannot do with other pumps. As the out-put is linearly related to rpm, the flowrate is easily controlled by changingspeed.

A pinion (drive gear) coupled with ashaft supported by two bearingsmeshes with an internal gear (drivengear) whose periphery is supported bya strong bearing. Liquid is transferedby a change in the capacity of thismeshed portion.In the suction process, the gears aredisengaged and a space defined by

the two gears and the casingexpands. The liquid is drawn into thespace by the negative pressure gener-ated.In the discharge process, their teethbegin to mesh and space defined bythe two gears and the casing isreduced to force out the liquid.

The recommended gear materials are K(SiC/SiC) for a viscosity below 200mPa•s and N(Si3N4/SiC) for above 200mPa•s.For handling liquids containing slurry, sticky liquids, liquids that harden easily, etc. , select a model with a torque limiter. Please ask us for information on pumps with torque limiters.

Viscosity-leakage coefficient graph

The chart on the left shows output at a discharge pressure of 0MPa. The output changes in proportion to rpm, but rpm should be reduced when pumping viscous liquid.Knowing required output and viscosity, the proper pump/motor rpm can be selected as in the following example.

For slurriesFor soft slurries, reduce rpm by 75%. For hard slurries, reduce rpm by 50%. In principle, only slurries of less than 10 m in diameter can be handled. GM type pumps can not handle slurries.

When discharge pressure risesThe lower the viscosity, as discharge pressure rises, the lower the output will be. You can estimate the actual output, in case of a change in viscosity or discharge pressure, from the following formula. (See note below).

Extend the intersected point to the left horizontally until intersecting the first pump line (GX/M-25). This point specifies pump.

Draw a downward line from to specify motor rpm .

Mark the value of your viscosity (500mPa•s) on the scale at the top and draw a line downward. In the event your viscosity falls in the middle of two scale lines, select the line on the left (the higher value).

Mark the value of your required output (10L/min) on the scale on the left, and draw a horizontal line to the right.
