    Reactants and Products

Chemical reaction  the process by which atoms or groups of atoms in substances are reorganized into different substances.

    Fe + O2 becomes Fe2O3

    Chemical Equations

Reactants  starting substances on the left side of the arrow.

Products  the substances formed during the reaction on the right side of the arrow.

    C6H12O6 + O2              CO2  +  H2O

    Reactants       Products

Balanced Equations  the number of atoms of each element on the reactant side must equal the number of atoms on the same element on the product side.

    C6H12O6 + 6O2              6CO2  +  6H2O

    C=__H=___O=___     C=___H=___O=___

Multiply the coefficient by the subscript for each element.

    Enzymes

Catalyst  a substance that lowers the activation energy needed to start a chemical reaction.

Does not increase the amount of product used and is not used up.

Enzymes  Special proteins that are biological catalysts that speed up the rate of chemical reactions in biological process.• Not used up• One enzyme for one reaction• Reusable• Lowers Activation Energy

    Enzymes Continued

Substrates  the reactants that bind to the enzyme.

Active Site  a specific location where a substrate binds on an enzyme

Substrate must match size and shape of active site to bond.

Enzyme breaks bonds on the substate and forms new bonds forming the product.

pH, temperature and other factors may affect the activity of an enzyme
