Metastable (β and γ) and stable (α) MnS crystallites are synthesized by solvothermal reaction in various solvents from MnCl 2 ·4H 2 O and thiourea (autoclave, 190–200 C, 2–12 h, 45% yield for metastable and 75% yield for stable forms). THF and benzene yield the metastable MnS crystallites, water, ammonia liquor, and ethylenediamine lead to α-MnS. The samples are characterized by powder XRD, XPS, and TEM. γ-MnS crystallites with rodlike morphology are found, and a unique ”methane-like” four-branched rod cluster is characterized. The blue shift of the absorption edge indicates the quantum size effect of metastable MnS nanocrystallites. — (LU, JUN; QI, PENGFEI; PENG, YIYA; MENG, ZHAOYU; YANG, ZHIPING; YU, WEICHAO; QIAN, YITAI; Chem.
