  • About ChennaiChennai is the capital city of Tamil Nadu and the fourth largest city in India. Located on theCoromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, Chennai is popularly known as the gateway to theSouth as it is the seat of culture and learning in South India. Hailed as the automobile capital ofIndia, Chennai is the third largest commercial and industrial hub of India.

As per folk lore, the name Chennaipattinam arrived from the Chenna Kesava Perumal temple. It is also believed that the region was named after Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu, who was theNayaka of Kalahasthi and Vandavasi. Several tools related to the Stone Age recovered fromPallavaram of Chennai, by the Archaeological Survey of India, points to the fact that Chennairegion held a megalithic cultural establishment.

The recorded history of Chennai can be dated back to 1st century AD, when it was regarded asan important military and economic hub. Later Chennai was ruled by many South Indiandynasties like the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas and Vijayanagara. The Portuguese arrived atChennai during 1522 and they were followed by the Dutch in 1612.

The British East India Company came to Chennai in 1639. It was the adjacent village ofMadraspattinam that was chosen as the place to settle in by the British. The town of GeorgeTown, with the fort of St. George became their stronghold in the South. George Town wasgranted its first municipal charter in 1688, which makes it the oldest municipal corporation inIndia.

In the 17th century, Madraspattinam and Chennaipattinam were merged by the British and itwas renamed as Madraspattinam. By the end of 18th century, most of Tamil Nadu came undertheir control. Under British rule Chennai was transformed to become a major urban centre andnaval base in South India. It was in 1996 that Madras or Madraspattinam was renamed asChennai by the Tamil Nadu State Government.

Chennai, today, is one of the major tourist destinations in South India. Chennai is famous for itstemples and churches which are considered as fine examples of architecture andcraftsmanship. Parthasarathy Temple, Kaapaleshwar temple, Ashtalakshmi temple, SanthomeCathedral Basilica, Velankanni Church, etc. are some of the famous religious attractions inChennai.

The highlight of Chennai tourism is its beaches. Chennai is home to one of the longest urbanbeaches in the world, Marina Beach, which is 12 km long. The months from November to Marchare the best time to visit Chennai, when the weather is pleasant.

The city also enjoys a vibrant culture, which is an amalgamation of the old and new. Of themany festivals celebrated, Tamil New Year is one of the biggest. It is celebrated by locals withgreat pomp and fervour. Festivities, feasting and giving gifts mark the occasion. The festival isalso known as Puthandu in many parts of Tamil Nadu. Tamil New Year is considered an

The vicinity of Chennai to Mamallapuram, Pondicherry, Kanyakumari, Chidambaram, Tiruvallur,Tirupati, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Swamithoppe, Kanchipuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai andTiruchirapalli makes it a hotspot among tourists.

Anna International Airport lies 7 km south of Chennai. The airport is connected by severalinternational airlines including Air India, British Airways, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Air Lankaand Malaysia Airlines. Pre-paid taxis and airport coaches are available at the airport.

Chennai has three major railway stations - the Chennai Central is the biggest, Egmore stationand Tambaram station. For quick access across the city, the recently introduced north-southMRTS (Mass Rapid Transport System) can be boarded. Chennai Central and Egmore are themain railway stations that link north and west India, respectively with south India.

At Chennai, most government bus services for Tamil Nadu which is TSTC and other privatebuses ply to all the cities in the state. The interstate bus service now operates from the newlyopened Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Koyembedu and is believedto be the largest bus station in Asia. Featured review about ChennaiChillax in Chennai !"Chennai is hot in the literal sense and also in an experiential manner! Hot places to see, hotfood to cherish and hot experiences overall. Right from the cuisine, the hustling busy shoppingexperience and the buzz around the beach, everything stays with you forever. To explore theadrenaline rush don't miss the cattamaran ride on the beach. The temples are divine and theshopping around T-nagar can get you really crazy! A holiday in Chennai is truly delicious, spicy, sporty, exciting, literally and otherwise!

We started our drive from Bangalore on a Friday morning and took the Hosur - Krishnagiri-Vellore - Chennai road. Smooth highway; the toll cost pinches you a bit but its worth the drive.

    Page 3/15

  • The outskirts were busy with traffic expecting the crowds to move in and out on a Friday. After abrief break for breakfast and lunch we drove into the city of the Super Kings. Busy roads, metroconstruction, movie posters and a hot weather welcomed us; which we expected.

We had taken a guest house in the busy T Nagar area almost the center of the city. A good 3bedroom house that could accommodate 10 of us. We ventured out in the evening to catch aglimpse of the shopping and drove to the happening Besant Nagar Beach. A place known for itsyoung crowd and a superb view of the beach. A nice walk with the typical boiled peanuts in yourhand and a stroll into the beach area to get a superb view of the ocean is a must. On your wayout do try a piece of the spicy mirchi bajjis fried hot there. Do carry a bottle of water just for yoursafety.

We drive again to T Nagar and feasted at the popular Murugan Idly shop with some differentvariety of Idlys and then headed to the room for an early sleep by 11! We were woken up withthe wonderful Chennai filter coffee. The very smell itself is hugely addictive. Got ready quicklyand went for a good breakfast at a nearby joint and headed by 10ish to the popularRenganathan Street in Tnagar, known for its wide variety of dress shops and a large crowd allthe time. Even though we walked away with half a dozen bags each it dint quite pinch ourpockets that much. Don't forget to bargain and get your negotiating skills a test !

After a meal at Anjappar joint, a must try for non vegetarians for the huge variety of dishes andcuisines on offer, we headed to the 2nd longest sea shore in the world, the Marina Beach. Awalk around the evening is pleasant and this beach is more crowded and more activitiesoptions to choose from. The balloon shooting and the gala games are an added attraction.

Post that we drove to the popular East Coast road, to go to Mayajaal, a multiplex with lot ofeating options. Had good food in the food court and went to Prathana Drive in Theatre. A one ofa kind experience of watching movie in a driving mode. Seated in your cars or just walkingalong or coming and siting on the floor, this movie watching experience is unique and will staywith you for long. A long drive back at 1st with empty roads gave us a good glimpse of the cityby night.

The next day was a leisurely start at 10 AM, and a heavy meal directly at the ever popularSaravana Bhavan joint in T Nagar and post which we hit the East coast road again for an evenmore crazy experience. We went to the Muttukaadu Lake area and had a good time. After thiswonderful experience we headed to Blue Bay resort on ECR and stayed for a night. Refreshedand we were ready for the beach yet again. A long walk along the beach and a night dinneralong the beach was a heavenly feeling and a nice time to talk and chit chat with friends with afresh sea breeze giving you company. The next morning we got up early around 7 to have aswim in the beach and that was a great start to the day. After a sumptuous breakfast at theresort, we headed our way back via Tambaram towards the Vellore and Bangalore highway withsome crazy memories.

Truly in its own style the land of the Super Kings was a crazy experience; amazing food, great

The Wonderful Chennai !"Chennai is a historical place and played important role from ancient times in history. This placeis an important centre for the British. The Marina beach is a beautiful place to spend evenings.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Chennai has an array of restaurants and hotels which servetasty food, notably, the Seasons, the restaurant attached to the Accord Metropolitan. The goodspread for the brunch on Sunday was quite enormous and catered to every taste both Indianand western. Apart from this, Chennai has a good number of nice restaurants catering to different taste budsand in international cuisine. The restaurant in Park Sheraton,Taj Coramanal,Connemara tomention a few, do not disppoint you for the tasty food. Of course for the middle level travellersthe Saravana Bhavan and Sangeetha do a good job providing good food at a reasonable price. For shopping, are nice place. The shopping arcades like Spencer Plaza, and Express Mall arenice places to ang out for shopping.

Activities & things to do: In the city of Chennai, apart from spending time in shopping, theMuseum is a place not to be missed as it contains a very good collection of artifacts and itemsof historical importance. At a distance of 55 KM from the lies Mahabalipuram, an ancient port place. This was animportant Port during reign of the Pallavas. There are many monolithic caves here carvedduring time of the Pallavas. The basfrelief called \'Arjuna\'s Penance\' you will find here is thebiggest in the world. Also Pondycherry the erstwhile French settlement, is 150 KMs from here. This place is famous for the Arabindu ashram Auroville, the international village.A visit toChennai is not complete without visit to these places.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Chennai is well connected with all countries in theworld by air.The city can be accessed from any part of India by air, rail and road." -Parthasarathy Rajendram, Bangalore, Apr 25, 2011

Visiting Chennai"Crowdy, yet cleaner than Delhi (except beaches). Good public transport including AC buses forlocal travel, local trains (very good network). if you want to experience the city without puttingload on your pocket, above is a very good option. But beware of the language problem. Goodinfrastructure, markets, beaches, makes this city a must for your holiday.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: My not to be missed list includes: Hot Chips (for authenticvegeterian chennai food, you can have meal for 4 for Rs.50 but the quality is great), Elliot'sbeach locally known as gandhi beach or besant nagar beach, would recommend staying inAdayar as this is the central place, T nagar for shopping (you may visit 4 storey mall just sellingsarees), Parthasarthy Temple which is walking distance from Marina Beach.

    Page 5/15

  • Activities & things to do: You can enjoy at Marina beach or Elliot Beach. However, I wouldrecommend Elliot Beach because it is cleaner & less crowdy. Enjoy local delicacies (fish) on thebeach or visit lifestyle mall which is remarkable in it's architecture, there are many templesspread across the city

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: DO NOT TRAVEL IN SLEEPER CLASS IFTRAVELING BY TRAIN, one can reach easily by train (would recommend Delhi Chennai Garibrath, good train at fare 25 percent less for AC 3 tier) or if you want to speed things up catch aflight. Since there is a major language problem, auto in Chennai would try to overcharge butstick to Rs. 100 for 5 to 15kms & Rs. 60 for distances up till 5kms. For distances more than thatuse public transport or call taxi (clarify at the time of booking that you would pay by the meter).Beaches are a must visit specially Marina Beach in the night." - Paras Bhatia, Delhi, Jun 9,2010

Shoppers paradise and good sightseeing too"Chennai or Madras in its previous avatar, is a big city which still retains an old world charm. With its well connected domestic and international airport, and main railway junction, it is anideal gateway to the many wonders of Tamil Nadu state. Chennai is a relatively safe destinationwith decent accommodation at all budget levels, good infrastructure, courteous locals, and a lotto offer to the tourist.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food: All kinds available but typical Tamil Nadu cuisine -famous veg tiffins and rices available in plenty at all the 'Bhavans'. Saravanas, Woodlands,Ananda etc are some of many reasonably priced places to try these varieties. Non Veg: TypicalChettinad specialities, sea food and Tamil Muslim varieties are famous and tasty. AmbikaAppallam Depot offers all the South Indian spices, condiments and masala pastes etc in neatpackaging at modest prices.Shopping: Panagal Park at T Nagar and Pondy Bazar close by, are most famous and rightly so,for umpteen varieties of South Indian sarees, jewellery, accessories, kitchen ware , clothing andso much more, all at very reasonable prices with a huge array of choices. Brass ware, metalcastings, lamps, Tanjore plates and paintings, papiermache and other handicrafts available atPoompuhar, VTI, Srushthi and various crafts fairs throughout the city. Alwarpet, Anna Nagarand various malls are also good for shopping or browsing. Also visit the ancient Kapaleeswarar and Sri Parthasarathy temple complexes, the Marina andElliotts Beaches, Theosophical Society woodlands, Kalakshetra, 1000 lights mosque, StThomas Mount and Basilica, Velankanni and Ashtalakshmi shrines.

Activities & things to do: Must see places close to Chennai are Mammalapuram for its ancientmonuments and white sand beaches, Kanchipuram for ancient temples and sarees. The newgolden temple near Vellore and Tirupati are also possible as day trips from Chennai. Tadaforest, Pulicat Lake, Mutthukadu backwaters, Vedanthangal bird sanctuary, Gingee fort andPondicherry are other popular destinations nearby. Dakshinachitra on the ECR road has apermanent display of typical South Indian houses, culture etc. Music lovers can enjoy theannual Carnatic music festival in Chennai and the Mahabalipuram festival.

Dakshin Chitra - ECR Chennai"On my recent trip to Chennai, I visited this place called Dakshin Chitra. This is on East CoastRoad juts after the Mayajaal, some 20 km from Chennai on the way to Mahabalipuram. It mainlyshowcases the rich tradition of four south Indian states. We can know about their way of living, kind of food they are eating, the kind of houses they are living (you can see the typicalChettinad houses here) their culture, their music and even their food (there is a restaurantwhich serves the typical food of each state). You can even attend sessions on Pot making, basket making etc. Next time if going to Chennai dont miss this place.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Mahabalipuram is just 20 kms from here.

Activities & things to do: Almost spend 5-6 hrs
