Page 2: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-0:05 to 0:07 secondsThese shots are here to show that the characters are traveling the world and are having a good time you can see the airport with a mid shot this captures the characters expressions and luggage for more verisimilitude and a sense of how the characters are feeling. Then the background is there to show the booking-in desk making sure the audience know they are at an airport. Buckingham palace is shown with a mid shot so that the audience can see the character again, and so that they can see they are at Buckingham Palace. The Eiffel Tower is shown with a establishing shot this is probably because it is too big to fit both the character and the tower in the shot. These shots are here to show the characters having a good time and to make the audience believe the characters are going to be fine and gives them a false sense of hope. It also shows that the characters in the trailer are normal average people and the situations they get into could happen to the viewers. This is effective because the audience will become scared of the antagonist characters and may fear them in real life but this could encourage the films publicity.

Page 3: Chernobyl Diaries

SoundUp to 0:11 seconds into the trailer there is parallel non-diegetic sound for the happy moments in the trailer.

Page 4: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-0:12 secondsThis wide angle shot is showing the group sitting down together their proxemics show that they are friends the postures are kept well the female characters keep a feminine posture and the men are slugging and bent over the table these little things brings more verisimilitude into the trailer. They have also used the conventional blonde girl with a big chest (the screamer) and they also have the brunette which is meant to be clever and her posture supports this.

Page 5: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-0:13 to 0:21 secondsThe first shot of the female and man is a two shot. This is capturing the expressions on the characters faces well. The audience can see that the male character is looking worried about what the other male is saying. The other male character in the mid shot shows that he is enthusiastic with what he is saying and the mid emphasises the facial expressions well so that the audience can see that he is impressed with himself. The over the shoulder shot shows that now that female character is worried about what he is suggesting this is emphasised by the rule breaking of the 180 degree rule this will confuse the audience and it is an effective why to confuse and worry the viewers in the horror genre. Then the last wide angle shot shows the characters then thinking about what he has said. The selection of shots will worry the audience because the characters have gone from thinking your idea is stupid and dangerous to maybe we could give it a go. The audience will now know that the decision to go is a bad one and worry from these scenes onwards.

Text-0:22 to 0:27 secondsThe text is effective it talks about how bad the explosion was and the background it is placed on brings the text out. The letters are all in higher case this shows that the information is important. The text is right for the horror genre but also for the narrative. Because the red is link with horror and the font is formal for the seriousness of the Chernobyl story.

SoundThere is a sound of sirens as the warning for a nuclear disaster occurs this is placed in with the text to make it more effective.

Page 11: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-0:39 to 0:40 secondsThis high angle establishing shot shows the setting and how abandoned the setting is the high angle gives the viewer the sense that the van is being watched this is creepy and will worry them.

Page 12: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-0:42 secondsThis wide angle shot shows the characters looking at the velocity of the terror that the nuclear explosion caused it shows the power station in the background and the vast area that has been effected. Page 14: Chernobyl Diaries

Page 16: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-0:49 to 0:50 secondsThis close up of a doll shows that the people in the area had to just leave their things behind because of the importance of the disaster. This is all adding to how bad the event was and building up the narrative.

Page 17: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera -0:53 to 0:57 secondsIn these shots the male character scares the others by pretending there is something that has caused him harm in the water, this shows that he isn't taking the journey seriously and as he seems like the main characters guide this will worry the audience because it turns out they aren't in safe hands.

Page 18: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:05 to 1:06 secondsThe over the shoulder wide shot shows the guide taking a picture of the main characters. This shows that they are treating the journey like a trip and not taking in the real dangers this will scare the audience. The grey mid shot of the characters shows from their proxemics that they are friends and it is a fun event for them the effect of the colour and the fact that the editing team have made it look like photo is effective it makes the trailer more interesting.

Page 19: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:06 to 1:11 secondsThese shots show the female character taking pictures and when she does there is a flash on the screen this is effective and it brings verisimilitude to the audience and makes them feel like part of the trailer. In the clips she zooms into the camera this is shown with a close up of the camera. She quickly realises she can see a figure and then the shot cuts to another shot which is a mid shot this time emphasising the expression of worry on her and face the fact the she is looking at the camera.

SoundThe sound now has added bass and the drums become louder this is because the clips are getting more enigmatic.

Page 20: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:11 secondsThis high angle wide shot is effective because the camera pans around the wall as if someone is watching the van also the high angle makes it feel like this as well and the high angle shows higher ground and dominance this will worry the audience. The shot is also misty and this would mean that the characters will have limited view. The audience will pick up on this and worry for the characters.

SoundThere is contrapuntal sound of a child's laugh in this scene because this is out of the ordinary it is freaky.

Page 21: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:14 to 1:22 secondsIn the first mid shot you can see that the guide is worried because it seems as if he cant start the van. The next mid shot shows that the wires have been destroyed this is the evidence that someone or something is after them this will be the point in which the audience will properly fear for the characters lives the next two shots show that they are trying to get hold of someone and that they are the only light for miles and this is daunting because now the characters cant see as it is night time.

SoundThe sound of the van not starting adds verisimilitude.

Page 22: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:24 secondsThis mid shot shows all the character freaking out and worrying about something this is shown by all the characters head are turned and they have worrying expressions on their faces the reason their facial expressions are captured well is because of the type of shot.

Page 23: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:28 secondsThis shot shows that they have had to leave the security of the van and search around this means that whatever is after them has a better chance the audience will be panicking about the safety of the characters.

Page 24: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:29 to 1:30 secondsIn this long shot it shows a shadow walking pas the enigmatic door this is creepy and in the genre of horrors creepy will scare the audience and is effective.

Page 25: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:31 to 1:33 secondsThese close ups show the look of terror on the characters face as something is in the room with her. The shot is effective because it emphasises the expressions on her face and it also shows in the background the figure waling past and this will freak the audience out which is what they director wants for the horror genre.

Page 26: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:35 to 1:36 secondsThis mid shot is showing the characters now running from something this will bring up the suspense and tension to a higher level and the audience will be getting more worked up and excited about the trailer and they will want to watch the film to find out why and this is good to the popularity of the film.

Page 27: Chernobyl Diaries

Text-1:36 to 1:38 secondsThe text talks about the creator of ‘Paranormal Activity’ being involved so that the audience knows that they will use similar techniques as the films mentioned. They advertise the other films because these films have been popular with the target so it sets up audience expectations on the style and content of the film.

SoundThere is a loud sound when the text appears this is so that the text runs flowingly with the clips. It also makes it more scary.

Page 28: Chernobyl Diaries

Text-1:43 secondsThe text gives the audience a date to look forward to will draw people in, to research the film thus it creates ‘buzz’ and ‘hype’ around the films release.

Page 29: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:45 to 1:47 secondsThese long shots show the characters running down a tunnel with limited light. The long shot works well because the characters are running down a long tunnel it shows the velocity of the space they are running around in the shot shows the limited amount of light and the opportunities for someone or something to jump out on the characters. This will all scare the audience and make sure the tension is building.

SoundThrough the previous scenes there has been the sound of something banging repeatedly throughout this tells the audience that someone/something else is with the character.

Page 30: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-1:48 to 1:58 secondsThe first mid shot of the characters looking at the map shows that the characters are now really scared and looking for a way out. Then the shot moves to a long shot of a child this is creepy because children are meant to be innocent but this child is the opposite and it works well if the director wants to freak the audience out. The last shot is a mid shot and it shows the character expressions to the child and they look freaked out.

Page 31: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-2:00 to 2:05 secondsThe mid shot of the woman is effective because you can see a figure in the background the figure is scary because the audience cant see its face. Then there is a wide shot of the characters walking over to the child this builds up tension because the audience is expecting something scary then suddenly there is a blood curdling scream the there is a wide shot of the female character earlier in the scene being dragged down a set of stairs. This is the first time the audience has a scare and it will relieve to tension for a another scare.

SoundAs the woman gets taken there is a scream and it is painfully scary.

Page 32: Chernobyl Diaries

Text-2:06, 2:12 and 2:22 secondsThese pieces of text are a couple of scenes away from each other but this means the audience is anticipating the next word and they will pay more attention to the single words and they will remember the text and think about it more than they would have if it was all on one page.

Page 33: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-2:07 to 2:08 secondsThis wide angle shot shows that the character now has a gun and now there is some protection this will give the audience some hope of the characters survival.

Page 34: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-2:13 to 2:14 secondsThe close up on the woman's face shows she is worried about something. The close up works well because the audience can see the expressions on the woman's face. Then there is a scene where something jumps at the van windows this is a place that the audience will jump and become scared so the sound will probably be amplified.

Page 35: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-2:14 secondsThis mid shot shows the male character firing the gun this is where the audience first see the characters reacting and taking charge this will give the audience hope. The shot works well because it captures the facial expressions and the gun.

Page 36: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-2:19 secondsThis wide shot shows that the special forces are getting involved this give the audience hope that the characters are able to get out alive. The shot is good because it involves the special force vehicles and the people involved.

Page 37: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-2:19 to 2:20 secondsThe low angle shot shows the audience the height of the stairs and how high up the characters are. This is going to scare the audience because it gives the characters a chance to fall.

Page 38: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-2:21 secondsThis point of view shot backs up the shot of the stairs and the female character had fallen from something this will scare the audience for the survival of this character.

Page 39: Chernobyl Diaries

Camera-2:23 to 2:25 secondsThese last close up shots are as if they are taken from a hand held camera and this is effective because the directors are using different type of camera and it gives the feeling of the footage is real it adds verisimilitude to the trailer and it is a scary, effective memorable ending to trailer.

Page 40: Chernobyl Diaries

Text-2:26 to 2:27 secondsThis is here for the peoples involved and for there recognition and for some people that the audience can look for.

Page 41: Chernobyl Diaries
