Oak Wilt Detected in Cherry Creek

Oak wilt, one of the most destructive tree diseases in the United States, is killing oak trees in central Texas at epidemic proportions . Oak wilt is an infectious disease caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum, which invades and disables the water-conducting system in susceptible trees. All oaks are susceptible but some more than others. Please look to the links below for great information. That will help to detect and explain how to treat this terrible blight. Note that it is not sufficient to simply remove the tree. The City Arborist responsible for the Oak Wilt Suppression Program is Chris Dolan (512) 974-1881 or [email protected].

WWW.texasoakwilt.org Within these pages you will find an array of oak wilt resources including everything from oak wilt biology to diagnosis, treatment, and management. Clicking the banner will return you to the Oak Wilt Information Partnership home.

Austin Immediate Care is a true urgent care center, not a hospital emergency department in disguise. not a hospital emergency department in disguise. not a hospital emergency

Aff ordable: Urgent care co-pays—saving you $$Quality: Board certifi ed physicians with ED experience

Convenient: Most patients are treated and released within one hourComprehensive: On-site diagnostic tests, laboratory, CT scans and x-rays

Practical: Open 365 days per year with extended hours

Before you visit a medical facility that calls itself an urgent care center, make sure that you will be charged urgent care co-pays—the diff erence could mean hundreds of dollars for you and your insurance company!

1. Perennial a. Plant: Early Spring i. Echinacea-- Purple or White. ii. Daisy –Shasta (White w/ Yellow Center) iii. Black Eye Susan—Yellow with Brown Center iv. Elephant Ears (very prolific so plant with care) b. Plant: Nov/Dec

i. Iris- Blooms March-May. Many colors. Once blooms are over the leaves add structure and background to your garden. The rhizomes are a little expensive ($2-$6 per plant) but they will quickly multiply and come back year after year.

ii. Ranunculus Blooms March/April 1. Inexpensive small bulb that is easy to plant

2. Looks great planted in bunches, can also plant in containers

2. Annual—Plant after last frost (generally about Mid March)a. Zinnia a particular favorite makes a great cutting flower. Many

colors. Put out seeds after first frost. Will continue to bloom all summer if you keep watered.

b. Nasturtium –big round leaves with beautify brilliant orange flower

Plants That Have Done Well In My Garden3. Roses—Plant early spring or fall a. Require full Sun b. Last for years

c. Make a very nice fix for a dry spot of lawn that the sun burns in the summer months.

A garden will take several years to become established and begin to take shape, so don’t worry if your perennials do not have much show the 1st year. When you first plant, whether seeds or small plant, be sure to water daily for the 1st 2 weeks. Mulch liberally, as mulch will protect from both sun and cold.

Box Tops for Education Have you seen these in your kitchen and wondered what to do with them? Here is the answer. Clip them off the package and put them in the dropbox at the front entrance marquee! They will then be donated to our local schools to provide much needed money. Each box top is worth ten cents to a neighborhood school. It may not sound like much but if the whole neighborhood saves them, it could add up to big money. Here is a brief history of the Box Top$ program. 2005 - Box Tops has now helped our nation’s schools earn over $130 million and includes over 86,000 participating schools. For the first time ever, the program expands to include brands outside of General Mills. 2006 - 10 Years. Over $175 million donations. More than 95,000 Box Tops schools. Box Tops continues its tradition of making a difference for more schools... and more kids... year after year. Box Top$ are collected ALL YEAR LONG, so start clipping and keep clipping!

Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of unintentional injury-related death ages 1-14.

DROWNING WILL AFFECT YOUOR SOMEONE YOU KNOW

Most children are out of sight or missing for less than 5 minutes and usually in the presence of 1 or both parents.

NO ONE is “drown proof” – no matter their level of swimming ability.

Falls, entrapments, and injuries lead to drowning regardless of swimming level.

A majority of people overestimate their own and their child’s ability to swim, especially in a panic event.

Drowning occurs in as little as 2 minutes.

Most children die who are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes.

Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes.

Children who drown do not scream, splash, or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, even with adults & lifeguards present.
