OUR STORY
Peter Cherry established Cherry Irrigation in 1987 with irrigation design as the focus service. When Charles (Peter’s son) joined the company in 1992, the service offering broadened to include automation and turnkey-type projects.
Cherry Irrigation has grown from three employees in 1987 to more than 50 permanent staff members. The company has its head office in Grabouw, South Africa, with two additional business units in Namibia and Angola to cover its operations in the SADC countries and the rest of Africa.

IRRIGATION DESIGN AND CONSULTINGWe offer a design and consulting service that includes all agricultural irrigation systems and crops. Clients can decide whether they need a full stand-alone service or only some aspects of the design steps.
We specialise in pumphouse/head control designs, automation systems and mainline reticulation systems.

HILGARD ROSSOUW, TECHNICAL MANAGERMember: SABI (Approved irrigation designer)
Hilgard earned his diploma in mechanical engineering at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2006 and has worked in the irrigation industry since 2008. He is not only known for the technologically advanced head control and irrigation system designs that he produces for high-value crops such as blueberries and cannabis, but is also a highly effective problem-solver through his hands-on approach and extensive practical knowledge of different technologies. His people skills add value to our client relationships as well as the constructive way our designers and technical staff operate.
ISOBEL VAN DER STOEP, AGRICULTURAL ENGINEER Fellow: SABI (Approved irrigation designer)
Isobel holds both bachelor and master degrees in agricultural engineering from the University of Pretoria, and is registered as a professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa. She has worked in the irrigation industry for over 23 years and has a great deal of technical, field, research, training and management experience. Isobel served as president of SABI from 2008 to 2009 and of the South African Institute of Agricultural Engineers (SAIAE) from 2013 to 2017.
OUR EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISEEach member of our team contributes to the company’s experience and expertise. As a result, we are able to cover a full range of your agricultural irrigation requirements. We have in-house expertise in civil, mechanical, chemical and agriculture engineering, as well as agricultural management, and extensive experience covering farm layout, system planning, earth dam design and water treatment processes besides various irrigation, automation and control systems.

CHARLES CHERRY, DIRECTORFellow: SABI (Approved irrigation designer)
Charles earned his diploma in civil engineering at the then Cape Town Technikon (now the Cape Peninsula University of Technology or CPUT) in 1994. At that point, he had already worked at Cherry Irrigation since 1992. Until 2007, when he took over the reigns as managing director, he had various focus areas in the business his father, Peter Cherry, founded in 1987. Known for his detailed technical knowledge of design, fertigation, automation and control systems obtained from a lifetime of working in irrigation, he has grown the company to employ a workforce of more than 50 people and extended its footprint to various countries in Africa, with separate business units in Angola and Namibia. Charles is actively involved in the irrigated agriculture community and served as president of SABI from 2014 to 2015.
PETER CHERRY, IRRIGATION DESIGNERFounder member and lifelong fellow: SABI (Approved irrigation designer)Founder of Cherry Irrigation
Having worked in the irrigation industry since the 1960s, Peter founded Cherry Irrigation in 1987. He has extensive knowledge of micro-sprinkler and drip irrigation design. His experience in overall farm layout, system planning and earth dam design is substantial. He plays an important role in guiding and developing the young designers at Cherry Irrigation.

ANTHONY WATSON, IRRIGATION DESIGNERMember: SABI (Approved irrigation designer)
From his civil engineering studies at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) to becoming an accredited SABI design member, Anthony has been in the irrigation industry since 2015. Through his career at Cherry Irrigation, he has successfully implemented turnkey projects and 3D modelling for pumphouse design. Anthony specialises in high-value crops and focuses on drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation systems. He prioritises good client relationships with fast and efficient pace and has a sound understanding of hydraulic pipe systems.
WERNER DE LEEUW DEN BOUTER, IRRIGATION DESIGNERFellow: SABI (Approved irrigation designer)
Werner is a qualified mechanical engineer, with a diploma from the former Cape Technikon (now the Cape Peninsula University of Technology or CPUT). He is highly versed in irrigation design and has over 25 years’ professional industry experience, including a term as vice-president of SABI. His core strengths are adaptability, problem-solving and a focused and systematic approach to design. He particularly prides himself on delivering hydraulically correct designs. Werner values a solutions-driven mindset, punctuality and neatness, and believes in always providing a high level of customer service.
DANVER DAVIDS, JUNIOR IRRIGATION DESIGNERMember: SABI
Danver holds a national diploma in mechanical engineering from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). He has a wide range of practical experience with different manufacturing processes, such as metal and HDPE welding, some of which he obtained as a naval technical officer. Since transitioning to the irrigation industry in 2017, he has become skilled in topographical surveying methods and plays a supporting role in the irrigation design office, where his computer drafting skills are put to good use.
GERT COETZEE, IRRIGATION DESIGNERMember: SABI (Approved irrigation designer)
Gert graduated from Stellenbosch University with a degree in civil engineering, whereafter he worked in construction for some years throughout South Africa and Namibia, providing him with a solid professional background in infrastructure development and project management. His transition to irrigation is a gain for the industry, and as a designer at Cherry Irrigation he makes an important contribution through his meticulous design of micro-sprinkler and drip irrigation systems for clients in South Africa as well as in our neighbouring countries.
ANDLE BOONZAAIER, IRRIGATION DESIGNERFellow: SABI (Approved irrigation designer)
Andle began his career in irrigation in 1982 and has played a crucial role in the growth and success of Cherry Irrigation since it was established in 1987. He is meticulous in his work and has designed hundreds of hectares of drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation systems over the course of his career, becoming a mainstay of the company through his work in Grabouw and surrounding areas.

NELUS DE WAAL, MARKETING DIRECTOR (ANGOLA)
As a rural development strategist and project manager, Nelus has been involved with various rural studies and agriculture projects in Angola since 1996. He is the co-founder of the Angola Alliance, a business consortium of like-minded engineers, scientists and planners aiming to transform Angola’s rural economy. Since its inception in 2001, the Angola Alliance has been responsible for several spatial development studies and multi-disciplinary projects in the agricultural sector. The Angola Alliance prides itself on the scope and variety of remote sensing and weather data it has produced and continues to produce. Nelus has been involved with several field studies and is known for his extensive knowledge of rural Angola and his deep love for the people of the country.
WILLEM MOSTERT, MANAGER (NAMIBIA)Member: SABI
As a born Namibian, Willem manages our business development, logistics and operations throughout Namibia. He holds both a higher certificate and a national diploma in agriculture from Grootfontein Agricultural College, as well as a BTech degree in agricultural management from the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein. Willem has worked in the irrigation industry since 2010. His core strengths are big picture thinking, strategic planning and building strong and lasting client relationships.
TASHA VAN NIEKERK, CHEMICAL ENGINEER
Tasha recently graduated from Stellenbosch University with a degree in chemical engineering and is excited about working in the irrigation industry. She values hard work and perseverance and loves working as part of a team and continuously learning new skills. Tasha is a natural problem-solver with a “can do” mindset. This enthusiastic addition to the Cherry team looks after the range monitoring devices supplied to growers.
