Yom Kippur 5773 ChecklistIn Advance
☐ Do Hataras Nedarim and Tashlich
☐ If minhag is to shlug Kapparos with chickens, find out time and location
☐ Ask Rabbi regarding medicines and other health and fast-related issues
☐ Prepare Kittel, Tallis, Machzorim (or other supplemental books or Kavanah enhancers), non-leather shoes for adults and children, Shofar for end of fast (if applicable)
☐ Confirm seat location–especially for women and children
☐ Pay off donation pledges and or debts
☐ Charge any pertinent electronic devices
☐ Research correct foods to eat before a fast
☐ Print out Yom Kippur Shul Schedule. Check on early Mincha time for Erev Yom Kippur
☐ Set the house alarm. Make sure to secure valuables, and lock your doors and windows as it is known that people are in shul most of the day
☐ Prepare smelling salts and cloves, if applicable
☐ Arrange for baby-sitting and play-dates
Erev Yom Kippur ☐ Give Tzedakah ☐ Go to Mikva ☐ Do Hataras Nedarim
and Tashlich, if not yet done
☐ Shlug kapparos (prepare money)
☐ Fulfill the Mitzvah to eat and drink the entire day
☐ Calling family to wish them a good Yom Tov
☐ Ask forgiveness from family, friends, business associates, etc., especially if you are aware that you have reason to do so (remember the time difference for people in other time zones, especially Israel)
☐ Check weather forecast ☐ Prepare food for after
the fast ☐ Prepare food and
books for kids – open sealed bags/packages/baby items in advance
☐ Prepare non-leather shoes for adults and children
☐ Visit cemetery ☐ Set alarm clock for
morning davening ☐ Daven Mincha early,
if possible ☐ Cook for and eat
Seuda Hamafsekes ☐ Remove gold jewelry ☐ Remove leather shoes ☐ Special blessing for
children (remember time differences if they are away – Israel is 6 hours ahead)
☐ Light Yahrtzeit candles for family members and/or a separate Yahrtzeit candle to be used as light for Havdallah. Light any other customary candles.
☐ Take any last-minute medications not permitted on Yom Kippur
