GIBTELECOMMASTERSThe first prize of £15,000 may not beshared. All other prizes shall be sharedwhere players have the same score.

In the event of a tie for first place, there shall be a speed play off. If there are 4 orfewer players tied for 1st place there will be a speed knock out play off for the firstplace. If more then 4 players tie for 1stplace the top 4 shall be decided onperformance rating.

The players who are in contention for thefirst prize, or their last round opponents,shall start round 10 at 10.00hrs. All othergames start at the usual time of 15.00hrs.This event is open to all.

WOMEN'S AWARDSIf there is a tie for the top women's prize, the tie is resolved in favour of the womanwith the highest performance rating, whowill receive the prize of £6,000. All otherties will not be subject to the tie break andprize money will be divided equally amongstthe players.

Rating prizes cannot be won bywinners of the main women´s awards.

RULES &REGULATIONSDraws by mutual agreement in under30 moves are not allowed. There mustbe no pre-arranged or tacit agreementsto draw games of any length, byrepetition or otherwise. Penalties mayinvolve loss of prize money.

The rate of play is 40 moves in 80minutes plus 20 more minutes for all the remaining moves, with one minuteper move added from the start.

Players who wish to take one half pointbye in the Masters may do so, providedthey give adequate notice. However noplayer may request a bye in the lastfour rounds.

SCHEDULEThe Masters shall start daily at 15.00hrs for rounds 1-9. It is open to all. The playerswho are in contention for the first prize, ortheir last round opponents, shall start round10 at 10.00hrs. All other games shall start at the usual time of 15.00hrs.

PAYMENT OF PRIZESPrizes in all events shall be paid bycheque or electronic transfer, except forthe two evening blitz tournaments andthe first week Challenger and Amateurevents. Any player wishing to receive hispotential prize money in cash (poundssterling or euros) must inform the hotel of their wish to exercise this option onthe entry form.

There shall be a charge of 3% of theprize money for this service. No prizewill be given before 23.00hrs on 5February 2009.

INTERNET CHESSCLUB ONLINEQUALIFIERThe Internet Chess Club (ICC), inconjunction with the Gibtelecom ChessFestival, are organising an online eventwhere the first prize includes travel to the Gibtelecom Chess Festival fromanywhere in the world and includes hotelroom, breakfast, dinner and entry. Theevent will be played in November 2008on the world's most popular playing site,the ICC at www.chessclub.com

BRITISHCHAMPIONSHIPQUALIFIERThe highest placed eligible player, notalready qualified, in the 2009 GibraltarMasters shall qualify for the right to playin the British Championship 26 July to 8 August 2009, Torquay.

MOBILE PHONESThese must be switched off in thePlaying Venue. If a player's phone rings,makes any sound or is used during play,the player will forfeit the game.

NO-SMOKING RULESmoking is forbidden in the Playing Halland adjacent areas or the Commentary Room.

MONROI GRAND PRIXThe Masters is part of theMonroi Women's Grand Prix.Female players can earn points to qualify for the Monroi Grand Prix Final.

GAMES INPUTTINGPlayers are expected to help ensure their games are showncorrectly on the Internet.

The Fide Rating list of 1 January 2009 shall apply. The Masters is a ten round Open Swiss tournament that shallprovide opportunities to qualify for titles and the FIDE World Rating List. An Accelerated Pairing system is used andthis provides exceptional opportunities to qualify for title norms. The two Challengers are also both FIDE Rated.

BY AIR Direct scheduled flights from Gatwick, Luton and Madrid toGibraltar. Approximate flying times 2.5 hours. Malaga is servicedfrom a substantial number of major cities. The transfer time byroad to Gibraltar is approximately 90 minutes, 130 kilometres.There is a public bus service. The border is crossed at La Lineain Spain. Malaga Bus Station (+34) 952 350061 or Algeciras BusStation (+34) 956 651055. If you log on to the following websiteyou will be able to access information on coach transfers andtime tables from Malaga to La Linea and also from Algeciraswww.andalucia.com/travel/bus/malaga.htm and then click ontravel information about Andalucia.

BY ROADMadrid is 500 kilometres from Gibraltar and takes approximately 6 hours. Ferry: From Tangier to Algeciras or Tarifa daily. There areferries from Tangier to Gibraltar, but these are much less frequentin the winter months. The timetable must be checked and aresubject to change. It is much easier to take the ferry to Algeciras,but then a Shengen visa is required.

MALAGA TO GIBRALTAR BUS SERVICE The organizers are interested in offering a bus service fromMalaga airport, as more and more participants are comingfrom there. We are planning to have buses leave Malagaairport from 12:00 till 15:30 on 26 January and returningfrom Gibraltar on the morning of 6 February to Malagaairport. The cost will be £25 per person return trip. Pleasecontact Manuel Weeks at [email protected] if you wish to make use of this service.

PASSPORTS AND VISASAll EU Nationals may enter Gibraltar with a valid identity cardor passport. A full passport is required should you wish tovisit North Africa.

Visas are required for visitors to Spain and/orGibraltar from certain countries. Thus, for example, aRussian or Moroccan national, reaching Gibraltarfrom Spain requires two visas. A Shengen visa anda Gibraltar visa are necessary. If he were to travel viaLondon, both a British and a Gibraltar visa would berequired. Gibraltar visas can be obtained from theBritish Embassy/Consulate in your home country.Players with five year entry visas to the UK do notrequire Gibraltar visas.

When applying for a visa, it is essential to start theprocess prior to 7 December 2008. It is much betterto apply to the Embassy in one's country ofresidence.

Provided people enter in good time, assistance willbe given as necessary, including a formal invitation.

BY TRAINTo Algeciras. It is then a short bus ride to La Linea.

GETTING TO GIBRALTAR

COURTESY BUSThis new service shall be provided from 12.30hrs to15.00hrs each day from 27 January to 5 February from thesix other hotels, starting at The Rock. A return service shallbe provided at 14.30, 19.30 and 21.30. No responsibilitycan be accepted for any failure in this new service. In anycase, there are buses, taxis and also it is possible to walkto the Caleta Hotel.

CURRENCYThe legal tender is the Gibraltar pound. UK pounds haveexactly the same value and are equally welcome. There is norestriction on the amount of money that can be brought in ortaken out of Gibraltar. Euros are widely accepted in all shops,restaurants and so on.

HEALTHNo specific vaccinations are required for Gibraltar, Spain or North Africa.

CLIMATEThe average temperature at that time of year is 15 degrees C.

TOURIST POINTSIt is neither necessary, nor particularly desirable, to bringyour own car. Since Gibraltar is only about 6 squarekilometres, it is very easy to get around. You may,however, prefer to hire a car at Malaga Airport. Gibraltar is a VAT-free shoppers' paradise.
