second half."Senior Jake Happ said the

team spent much of the game infoul trouble.

"We have to stop fouling asmuch as we do so we can keep theguys we want in in," Happ said."We didn't do as well as we want-ed to."

Chardon junior Zach Weilandsaid the depth perception of the20,000-seat NBA arena was a fac-tor on the floor.

"It just throws your shot offcompletely," he said.

Wolverines' guard GinoIacampo agreed.

"The depth perception is sooff," he said. "When I was at thefree throw line, it was like shoot-ing five feet."

West Geauga’s Aaron Rabehit three 3-pointers in the first half,so the senior was not as affected.Rabe finished with 11 points.

"I played here last year andI had more of a feel for it thisyear," he said. "I was able to getin the stride and hit my three."

Both teams rotated in a lotof players. West Geauga startedBidar, Devon Zurcher, Rabe,Rakich and Mario Formichelli.

Chardon started Happ,Weiland, Janda, Ben Furlich andAndrew Gray. Furlich led allChardon scorers with 16 points.

The Wolverines are now 2-0in the young season. After a 17-win season a year ago, expecta-tions are high.

"If we play as a team, wecompete with anyone we playon our schedule, I think,"Rakich said.

"I think we need seniorleadership this week in practiceto make sure we come off thesevictories hard," addedFormichelli.

"I think we can competepretty well with almost anyteam," Rabe said. "If we areable to get our offense fluidlymoving and get our defensiveintensity up the whole time andnot get in foul trouble, I thinkwe'll do really well this season."

“It reflects badly on theboard (of trustees),” Radtkesaid.

He suggested Joyce hold apublic meeting, so others cancontribute to the discussion.

“They are welcome toattend. No decisions will bemade,” Joyce said.

However, he noted ifRadtke or Trustee Judy Caputoattend the meeting, the trusteeswill be in violation of Sunshinelaws, unless they advertise themeeting as a special meeting.

Resident Ron Cotman saidhe talked to a number of peoplefrom community organizationsand was told Joyce has askedfor help building a dog park, adisc (Frisbee) golf area and anice skating rink at the park.

“I’m appalled by that,”Cotman said. “I have neverheard this board since thebeginning of the year talk aboutthe 80-acre park.”

However, at a special meet-ing on July 14, trustees held alengthy discussion about a 2013budget item that allowed

$250,000 to develop the park.Joyce said at the time, the

Lion’s Club was interested inestablishing a football field atthe park.

According to a story in theJuly 19 Maple Leaf, Cotman —who recommended trustees putup a fence around the steep-sided, deep pond for safety andget rid of the “No Trespassing”signs so residents can enjoy theacreage — also urged trusteesto wait on dog parks and foot-ball fields until they get feed-back from the community.

Joyce and Radtke compro-mised at that meeting andchanged the proposed budget toearmark $150,000 for develop-ment of the park.

Last Thursday, Joyce said hewould support fencing the pond, establishing a parking area, excavating a small pond for iceskating and having a Frisbeegolf course which would pro-vide people of all ages withopportunities for recreation.

A member of the audienceprovided the letter to residentswhich read, in part “The purposeof this meeting is to invite resi-dents surrounding the 80-acre

parcel to inform them of thetrustees’ intentions for theacreage and gather input andfeedback from the public todetermine the best public use(s)for the property.”

Joyce said he didn’t read theletter before it was sent out. Healso said he doesn’t think thereis a need for a notice of a spe-cial meeting unless Radtkeintends to attend.

Radtke said he won’t beattending the meeting, but heasked Joyce to record the con-versation.

Joyce resisted explainingwhy he specifically invited indi-viduals with property adjacentto the park to the meeting.

“I don’t have to give you areason. I’m going to talk to peo-ple,” he said.

After the meeting wasadjourned, Joyce said when heasked for the letter to be sentout, he assumed other trusteeswould receive copies, which isstandard procedure.

Regardless, there will be fol-low-up meetings to gather pub-lic opinion before trustees makeany decisions about the park’sdevelopment, Joyce said.

currently have a specific plan inplace to deal with employmentor under employment, GeaugaGrowth Partnership (GGP)President Frank Samuel saidthe business-to-business eco-nomic development organiza-tion would be happy to workwith the United Way.

Leslie Bednar, GGP officemanager, was among thoseattending a Nov. 15 unveiling ofthe report.

“Even when I was there, Iwas thinking about how theGGP could help the UnitedWay and other organizationsmeet the employment needs ofGeauga County residents,”Bednar said. “The report wasstellar.”

Leininger said the UnitedWay will begin the planningprocess by paging through theextensive GCI data with theGeauga County Board ofMental Health and RecoveryServices, the county Depart-ment of Job and FamilyServices, the county Depart-ment on Aging, the Family FirstCouncil and other interestedagencies to determine otherpossible service priorities andsolutions.

“After that, we’ll all have abetter idea of what needs to be

done and how we can do it,”Leininger said.

Regarding health needs, onespecific area of focus is afford-able prescriptions, she said, adding the solution may be assimple as increasing communityand medical awareness of theLake-Geauga Drug Repository.

The repository — operatedby the Lake Health DistrictFund in partnership with theLake County General HealthDistrict and the United Way —offers medications at “incredi-bly lower prices,” Leiningersaid.

The GCI report also uncov-ered affordability of health careservices as another issue thatwill require brainstorming,Leininger said, adding the sur-vey found 10,395 people, or 11.3percent, of the county’s popula-tion do not have health insur-ance.

This ties Geauga Countywith Summit County in havingthe fifth highest percentage ofinsured people out of sevenNortheast Ohio counties.

Ashtabula, Cuyahoga,Lorain and Portage respectivelyrank higher.

“So, we’ve got to figure outhow we can either bring somepro bono (free) health care serv-ices to the county and bringaffordable health care servicesinto this county so that peoplewho can’t afford health insurance

can get the care they need,” sheadded.

Commissioner Mary Samidesaid she is especially concernedabout the growing drug prob-lem in the county.

The GCI report showsGeauga County has one of thehighest percentages of people12 and older that use alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, pain killingopiates and other illicit drugs inNortheast Ohio.

The report, for example, shows 3.4 percent of county res-idents use illicit drugs while 2.2percent use cocaine. InCuyahoga County, use rates are2.1 percent and 2.9 percentrespectively.

In comparison, the illicitdrug and cocaine use rates in allof Northeast Ohio are 3.2 per-cent and 2.1 percent respective-ly.

“I don’t know what theanswers are, but I think we defi-nitely need to focus on this andgive people — law enforcementand others — the tools to com-bat this and make people moreaware of this,” Samide said.

Commissioner TracyJemison concurred with Samide, but said the unemployment andunder-employment informationshows “we need to continue tofoster an environment that isbusiness friendly and can createjobs.”

Girl Scouts ReceiveSilver Award

Girl Scout Troops 71221 and71222 recently earned the GirlScout Silver Award.

The award is the second high-est award and is earned as acadette. It is a safe way to buildleadership skills and createsomething sustainable whileworking on a community project.

Each girl was responsible for50 hours of service toward theproject.

The troops were welcomedby the Hamlet community andallowed to create a stimulatingplace for residents, family andstaff to enjoy.

Seventeen girls workedtogether throughout the sum-mer to plan, implement and cre-ate the garden.

hydrangeas, lilacs and rosesalong windows and the court-yard path. Vegetables and herbswere also planted in boxes forresidents to harvest.

The garden features embell-ishments throughout the spaceincluding a water feature, but-terflies made from recycledmaterial and placed in trees, abowling ball covered in pennies, painted stone and tile to addcolor and visual stimulation, aladder sign hanging from a tree, and new stones and ornamentalgrasses.

A brochure was also createdto help identify the new plants.

Over 200 people attended the WG Hockey “Turkey Bowl” at Gilmour Ice Arena on Thanksgiving morning. The West Geauga alumni team played the current high school team. The alumni lost in an entertaining and com-petitive match. All attendees brought food to help feed those in needy. Dee Bolt, an alumni parent said, "I can'tbelieve what a wonderful response we received. Over 400 food items were donated to the Cleveland Food Bank."
