Looking for a meaningful and

visually interesting way to add

style and character to your cottage

décor? Consider incorporating reclaimed

elements. For those familiar with this

increasingly popular design trend,

images of flooring made of old hickory

barn wood immediately come to mind.

But there's much more to it than that.

Barn boards can also be used on walls,

or to create surface space in the form of

shelving and table tops. Old ladders can

become bookshelves, packing crates may

be repurposed as coffee tables, and old

mahogany boats can be reshaped to find

a new identity as unique furniture pieces.

The possibilities are endless.

Wood is by far the most popular

reclaimed material. It can be salvaged

from decommissioned buildings and

fishing wharfs, railroads, pallets, as well

as other sources.

Some of the advantages of reclaimed

wood are its superior strength

and quality, its unique weathered

look providing a rustic feel, and its

environmental friendliness, as its use

reduces the demand for freshly

sourced lumber.

Some old wood, however, can also bring

with it unwanted dangers like pests,

chemicals, paint, and even broken nails,

so it's important to work with a reputable

supplier that properly sorts and

processes the material before reselling it.
