The Running Chicks have thelargest team taking part inSunday’s 7 Sunshine CoastMarathon Festival.

Entrants will primarily be in themarathon and half marathonevents, as well as some in the10km, 5km and 2km distances.

They’ll be easy to spot, wearingthe distinctive blue and goldcolour scheme – whichsymbolises the ocean andsunshine.

Originally from England, it wasrunning which brought Deb andher family to the Coast.

Living in Perth for eight years,Deb and her husband Chrismoved to the Gold Coast. Notenjoying the glitter strip, theycame to the Sunshine Coast for aParkrun event one weekend andthe rest is history.

Deb, who now lives at PelicanWaters, is the director ofBightwater Parkrun.

“Chris is a runner. He used to bea professional triathlete and he gotme going,” she said.

“Walking was boring so I startedjogging.”

Getting out was important forDeb after the birth of theirdaughter Sienna, having felthousebound, unfit and strugglingwith aspects of postnataldepression. Six months later shewas in fine form and ran the 10kmrace (while pushing her daughterin a pram) at the Sunshine CoastMarathon festival in 2013.

Running Chicks now has 600members on the Sunshine Coast,400 at Wide Bay and 100 atNorthern Rivers. RunningRoosters has also been formed forblokes.

The groups are a place to findtraining partners, discuss trainingplans, discuss all things runningrelated and get together for socialevents.

“We’ll be wearing yellow ribbonsappreciating mental health andwe’ll have a tent at the SunshineCoast marathon where we have abarbecue and raise money formental help and RU OK day,” Debsaid.

Deb is currently recovering fromskin cancer procedures so she willbe sidelined on Sunday, wearing

the Running Chicks’ trademarkblue wig and tutu, and cheering.Runners are encouraged to wear ayellow ribbon to show theirsupport for mental health issues.

Excitement is building ahead ofthis weekend’s festival.

Among the major changes thisyear will see the marathon and halfmarathon competitors set off atthe same time on a new coursewhich has four fewer u-turns andreduced corners.

All eyes will be on the clock forthe half marathoners, with$25,000 up for grabs if anyAustralian can break the national21.1km record.

Five athletes with sub-65 minutetimes are set to compete in the

21.1km race, which alsodoubles as theAustralian HalfMarathonChampionship. Itwill be the mostcompetitive fieldfor a 21.1km racein the countrythis year.

Amid them isOlympian CollisBirmingham (pictured above), whowas among the pacers at theBreaking2 event in Italy duringMay, and is the hot favourite tosecure the title with a personalbest of 1:00:56.

The national men’s record

holder is Pat Carroll 1:01:11 (1994),while the women’s title is held byLisa Weightman 1:09:00 (2010).

“We have inspired many peoplein our other screenings, and weare quietly confident runners, triathletes and non-runners alike, will find the 120 minute screeninga great delight, especially before arunning race.

“It’s as much about the personas it is about pounding thepavement.”

PERHAPS it’s foxing, and acunning ruse to lull thecompetition into a false sense ofconfidence.

But John Eastham from Crick’sAuto Group’s Running with theStars team had one primaryquestion: “Is there a SAGwagon?”

The Crick’s line-up of John,Garry Crick, James Welch andSam Bohner is one of six teamspoised to take part in the inauguralevent as part of the 7 SunshineCoast Marathon weekend.

Each team member will run alap of the 500m course withbragging rights going to the firstacross the line after completingthe 2km route.

“We could be last ... the onlyway is up,” John said.

“Is there a time limit?”Achilles problems were the

reasoning behind John’s lack ofconfidence, while Garry does littlerunning nowadays due to a kneeinjury which occurred while trailbike riding more than 15 yearsago.

That means the pressure fallson James and new recruit Sam(coming into the team to replaceDean Stuart), who will have sometough opposition.

Among the event favourites area team from the Sunshine CoastLightning. The reigning Super

Netball champions will belooking to continue their winningways with the likes of mid-courterLaura Scherian, shootersStephanie Wood and CaraKoenen.

Ray White will also be puttingtheir best foot forward with thelikes of Dan Sowden, Dan Smith,Brent Higgins and JamesGoldsworthy poised to toe theline. Radio Hot 91.1 will also be inthe mix, with Ash Geirke, LaurenGreenway, Kate Morrison andPeter Stevens competing.

Crick’s Auto Group is an activesupporter of the running festival, with John a board member, and toencourage entries the companypaid for any employees to enter.

“We feel it’s a great thing toencourage,” he said. “Last yearwe did the same initiative andthere are three or four people whodid it last year who weren’t regularrunners who are now. Sam

Bohner is one of them ... it’s prettycool to get people involved in agreat community event and that

inspires others to want to continuebeing fit and healthy.”

Running with the Stars will helpkick-start the weekend of runningfestival activities.

A family fun and registrationarea will be set-up near theAlexandra Headland Surf LifeSaving Club, opening on theFriday and Saturday.

All the racing action starts from6am on Sunday morning with themarathon and half marathongetting things underway.

AFTER months of gruelling trainingand sessions of more than 20Buderim hills in one ride, MeredithHill can finally relax.

The Peregian Beachphysiotherapist secured secondplace in the gruelling NorsemanXtreme triathlon in Norway at theweekend – an event renowned asone of the world’s toughestiron-distance events.

Hill finished the 226km course, which included a 3.8km swim incold water after jumping off a carferry, followed by a mountainous180km ride and 42.2km run, in12hrs16min50sec.

After leading for much of therace she was passed by eventualwinner Norwegian Ann Nevin, whoclaimed victory by 12 minutes.

“It was bloody amazing. Thecourse is spectacular,” Meredithsaid.

“It was often hard toconcentrate on where I was going.I wanted Norway to throw itsinfamous elements at us so I’dhave the true Norsemanexperience, and it definitely did.

“Thankfully the wind was in ourfavour for parts of the day so itwas a faster race than previousyears. We had sleeting rain, fogand temperatures down to 3-4degrees Celsius so I didn’t missout.”

Starting well despite the freezingwater, Meredith produced a 59:56swim before getting on the bike.

Facing nearly 3700m ofclimbing throughout the brutalbike course, she completed thejourney in 6:23:09.

Yet it was the marathon whichproved the most difficult.

“The toughest part for me wasdefinitely the uphill running whichstarted at 25km of the marathon,”Meredith said.

“It was relentless for 7km ofswitchbacks of about 10% beforeflattening out temporarily. That’swhere I suffered the most and wasreduced to a run/walk. It wasdifficult to try and replicate this intraining on the Sunshine Coast. The Norwegians definitelydominated here.”

Being at the pointy end of thefield enabled Hill to earn a covetedblack finishers t-shirt. Only the first160 of 250 competitors areallowed to tackle the finalmountain due to safety issues.

There is an alternative finish forthose who don’t make the cut-off.

Surprisingly, Meredith managedto get through the icy swimwithout issue.

“The water was actually okay. Iwas decked out with booties, athermal hood and a thermal suitunder my wetsuit,” she said.

“There was some icy coldpatches where glacier water flowsinto the fjord so those definitelymade me feel alive.”

Her second place capped animpressive comeback to racing. She finished fourth at the halfiron-distance (1.9km swim, 90kmcycle, 21.1km run) Challenge

Iceland as a training weekend.Meredith’s last event was the

Ironman 70.3 WorldChampionships at Mooloolaba inSeptember, and she had sincebeen sidelined with a stressfracture of the sacrum.

Having recovered well fromNorseman, she will return to theSunshine Coast and plan herschedule of local races over the

next six months.“At this stage, I won’t rush back

to do Norseman again next year. Iabsolutely loved the race andwould highly recommend it toanyone who likes a personalchallenge,” she said.

“There are other races, likeCeltman or Swissman which I’dlove to experience beforerepeating Norseman.”

TEN thousand dollars is alwaysgood for motivation. That lurehelped boost the Hells Bellsadventure race to recordnumbers, attracting interstatecompetitors chasing the five-figurebounty.

Team Thunderbolt, featuringBernadette Dornom, HughStodart, Josh Street and LeoTheoharis claimed a thrilling overallvictory which keeps them in therunning for the big pay chequeand entry to GodZone in NewZealand.

While most raced as teams oftwo, there were 11 teams of fourwho took part in the 24-houradventure race, many hunting theA1 Series $10,000 prize pursewhich goes to the best rankedteam after four races – includingX-Marathon, Geoquest, Hells Bellsand finally Wildside, which will bestaged near Canberra duringOctober.

Starting from Golden Beach, this year’s race saw competitorsmountain bike, trek, kayak andpaddle their way through a 150kmcourse. Fairy Bells was about halfthe distance for novice teams.

Competitors were given mapsto the course designed by DavidSchloss and Chris Dixon twohours before the start, and therace included:

■ A short paddle on boogieboards to Bribe Island

■ 20km of beach and trailrunning on Bribe

■ 18km kayaking inPumicestone Passage andCoochin Creek

■ 90km mountain bikingthrough Beerwah State Forest, single track on Ewen MaddockDam and back to Caloundra

■ Midnight 12.5km trek inDularcha National Park.

Hells Bells attracted some ofAustralia’s best adventure racers, including Mountain Designs WildWomen, Peak Adventure, BMXBandits, CBRAR and TigerAdventure French Connection.

There were also some familiarfaces, such as Jan Leverton andthe Tri Adventure crew, GarySutherland’s Tiger Adventure andPaul Elby’s The Peaky Blinders.

After nearly 14hrs and 50mins ofracing it came down to a sprintfinish between the current nationalchampions Thunderbolt AR andPeak Adventure, with Paul Elby’sThe Peaky Blinders and GarrySutherlands Tiger Adventurefighting it out for third and fourth.

Fairy Bells was won by HappyEnding in a time of 10hrs 15 minswith Jan Leverton’s Tri AdventureVintage with a close second.

On top of the usual fire trails andsingle track teams had a fewsurprises along the way with offtrail orienteering sections throughlantana to discover cliffs andcreeks, barbed wire fences andcreek crossings, and the old railtunnel at Mooloola.

“With Hells Bells now part of anational series we really wanted todo something new and differentand getting the racers onto BribeIsland, while tough from a logisticsperspective, really made the race.Especially with the perfectSunshine Coast weather,”organiser Chris Dixon said.

“Holding the race close to thebeach meant it was going to be afast, flat race, so we made use ofevery hill, mud flat, creek crossing

and barbed wire fence we couldfind to ensure it truly lived up to it’sname ‘Hells Bells’….and it did.

“While the winning teams areamazing, its the tail end teamsthat cross the line at the 24 hourmark that are really inspiring –anyone that can problem solveand navigate a 150km course withno sleep, tackle a really toughcourse and arrive at the finish linewith a smile on their face is trulyamazing.”
