Curator’s Note

Art is something which is seen but more importantly felt. A plethora of emotions are evoked which bring about feelings of extreme happiness, euphoria and satisfaction ....

In this exhibition, I have covered a wide genre of art from the realistic to the figurative to the abstract .The time frame ranges from mythology to the futuristic. I am overwhelmed by the response of all my fellow artists who have so generously contributed their paintings. They have spared time from their very busy schedules to create such outstanding work to reach out to people in dire need of treatment.

These artists are eminent artists of our country-the luminaries of the art world who will leave an imprint in the footprints of time. Each artist has his unique style and is a path breaker in his respective genre. I shall not dwell on the individuality of the work of each artist as their profiles speak for themselves.

For our art lovers, your one act of charity will make a world of difference to innumerable lives.

When an artist paints, he paints from his soul but when a person donates, he donates from his heart. So, own a piece of art which is a joy forever for you, but at the same time brings so much cheer in the lives of the underprivileged afflicted with cancer. You can make a difference in their lives.

I thank the Indian Cancer Society for giving me this opportunity to curate this show for them.

Arzan Khambatta came into the limelight with his exhibition ‘Scraptures’ where he created wonders out of metal scrap. Arzan now works with fresh sheets of metal. The result of his filing, bending, moulding, cutting, welding and burning is a collection of work that is dramatic in impact: rivers of lava surging through charged valleys, flaming planets spiraling dizzily in space among others. He often uses light and shadow to heighten the nuances of moods in his works.

Artist: Charan Sharma.title: ShrinathjiSize: 24 x 42 inchesMedium: Acrylic and gold leaf on canvasPrice: Rs 5 lacs

Charan Sharma, the noted Indian painter begins a new chapter. For many of his paintings he has turned to lively images of puppets and warriors, this being typical of Rajasthan. Charan is like a tree that gets its sustenance from the roots and flourishes in the windstorms of modernity. Technically, he is adventurous, making use of more than one medium….watercolours, pen & ink, use of gold leaf and acrylic on canvas. There is innovation here both on imagery and technique. As usually there is a touch of exuberance in Charan’s treatment. He stands out among contemporary artist with his superb invention and meaningful innovation. Considering his movement through various phases, Charan Sharma emerges as an artist who has carved a distinct niche for himself”-

Jaya Lamba

Jaya Lamba's paintings are influenced by a multitude of experiences that span cities and cultures, the omnipresent bright red lines running through as a web that connects her distinct experiencesand represents the pushing-forward of the world. The key to her oeuvre are shocking, vibrant colors and a deep study of the human form. She draws inspiration from her immediate context–be it the philosophical and spiritual odyssey of the soul or the ever-present pressures of politics;or the sinuous curves of muscles stretched taut .The images in Jaya's work weave through both the corporeal and psychological worlds, creating visual representations of things unseen and bringing new depth and focus to the human figure.

Lalitha Lajmi

She places windows often within domestic spaces, windows that look into landscapes of the mind. These she depicts as artist self-portraits. Lajmi was born to a poet father and a poly-linguist writer mother in 1932. Through a vocabulary of an unequal distribution of images and perspectives within the same plane she narrates a layered history of the modern Indian woman in the decades that followed independence. She returned to her career as an artist after her marriage and the birth of her children in an exhibition of the Progressive Artists Group in 1960 at the Artist's Centre Bombay. A year later her mentor KH Ara, who had included her in the exhibition, gave her the opportunity to do her first solo show. Being one of the few women artists of that period, Lalitha managed her career along with the responsibilities of a family and that of an art teacher within a school. She returned to her home late in the evenings. This and the lack of sunlight curtailed her painting. Having studied the art of intaglio and etching through government funded program for evening classes at the Sir JJ School of Art, from 1973 to 1976, Lalitha set up a press within her kitchen. Working at night using electrical light, through an interesting use of grisaille and sepia tones, she began making prints that later were to travel to an exhibition that took place simultaneously in West and East Germany in 1983, supported by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Images in her works are metaphors with multiple references to relationships, dream sequences and multiple identities. The performer- often the clown -represents our own domestic performance of roles we are expected to play, the mask - our concealed identities through which we put up our multiple appearances, and the skull a vanitas to our short life. Drawn from her personal history she creates a visual biography that is left to interpretation oh her viewers. Presenting dichotomies that are both humourous and tragic, akin to the stories her brother, the legendary director Guru Dutt often narrated through his films. Her works are held in the collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art, British Museum and CSMVS Museum Bombay.

My Vision- Culmination of images and impulses awakens my mind to express life as an integral part of nature. Confronting different phases of time, I tried to explore life for my physical and metaphysical quest by phenomenal guidance of nature. I transform the energy of consciousness into consolidated images of reality charged with human emotions by combining beauty with absurdity as a counterpart, which provides immense space to my mind for registering mystical actions –reactions of human existence. Life like an endless ocean is an unending mystery which has countless hues to express an everlasting source of inspiration that flows down from my unconscious mind to creative consciousness like an unrestricted, freely flowing river combining both the banks together ‘unity’.

Subhash Awchat

As a young boy, Awchat’s household was often visited by spiritual seekers, including even, the Shankaracharyas. It is this sacred tradition or ‘parampara’ that he tried to capture in his paintings. The seduced colours of spiritual iconography, the faces serene and beautiful in sharp contrast all made their way to his canvas. Colours are crucial in Awchat’s work, as is obvious in this composition of red, gold and black - a silence that screams for attention.

SUNIL MEHTA

A bit about my painting techniques: I paint in acrylics, oils and water colors. My favored style in oil or acrylics is impasto as it creates beautiful imagery and depth and exploits the richness of the paints. It produces a pleasing tactile surface. Landscapes convey peace, tranquility and considerable warmth. My work reflects nature at its most awesome and my paintings attempt to record a landscape molded both by man and by nature; I paint the wild grandeur of the sea and the greens of the pastures. I see the landscape in terms of an ever-changing palette, from season to season, as clouds and sunlight striate the countryside or seas. I often use mixed media techniques, especially for my abstract works. My style reflects a natural world that is alive, restless. I prefer painting land and seascapes along with abstract works in oils and acrylics on canvas. I generally paint western landscapes.

thota vaikuntham

"I like using rich primary colours, which give a sense of character and depth to my paintings. Like reds and saffron and even orange, because these are essentially Indian colours. I don't like using colours that are mix of two, because they are not natural, they don't exist in surroundings around us, in our everyday life."

T. Vaikuntam hails from Andhra Pradesh, in South India, and draws a lot of inspiration for his work from the rural areas of the state. The men and women of his village have often been depicted in his work. Women, in particular, are frequent subjects for his works. The love for this subject can be traced back to his childhood, when he used to be fascinated by the impersonations of women characters by the male artists of the theatre groups that traveled to, and performed in his village.

He portrays women as sensual and voluptuous. The colours used to paint women give them a vibrant and decorative, look. The male form appears remarkably calm, with a sense of humour. His work has a distinct rural flavour. In his work, he uses only primary colours. Most of his work is in tempera and watercolour, on paper. His recent substitution of paper with wood lends his work an ephemeral quality.

Over the years, with matured experience and cohesive pacing towards his aim, he has formed his visual vocabulary dedicated to silence in order to open and ear to the field of human vision.

In his paintings one sees rags being transformed into colours, stains into aesthetic areas. Bandage not covering the wound but revealing the innerlustre of the feeling the artist has cared for. One may imagine their marks left in between some scratches, or stuck with the loose threads hanging from the contour of a pasted piece of cloth serving as a lone reminiscence. At one moment one can easily identify the material used by the artist to disclose his artistic merits, but such a state of identification does not last for long, as the same pushes further for an unusually stunning experience. It enters into a journey where one can experience the inseparability of matter and spirit inquisitively, explored by a beholder of creative impulses and keen craftsmanship.

You may not find his signature on his paintings, but such a kind of an absence speaks for the presence of the artist who has given to the paintings his eyes, his breath, his blood, his yesterday, today and tomorrow, his joy and sorrow, all and everything except his name – Vasant Wankhede – whichwas given to him by his parents and now once again by his paintings.

Vinita Karim

Vinita Karim has lived and worked across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Educated in Sweden and the Philippines, she has taken full advantage of her changing surroundings as an inspiration and catalyst for new ideas in her artwork. You can find hints of all these places in the dreamy skylines and richly layered cities of her abstract landscapes. A golden fort from Malta, sand dunes from the Sahara, and a glimmering boat in the Red Sea – always painted with festive colors that are no doubt inspired by Vinita’s roots in India.

According to the artist, “Landscape is redefined in my work by the infusion of fantasy and abstraction to create multi-layered works hinting at places that are rarely seen but often dreamed of.” Vinita compliments the rich layers of oil and acrylic paint in her landscapes with gold, silver, and copper leaves. These delicate sheets remind us of the fragility and preciousness of our planet.

Vinita Karim has earned an MFA from University of Philippines as well as a B Sc. from University of Stockholm, Sweden. She has held 22 solo exhibitions around the globe and her work has been shown at some of the leading art events such as Sikka Art Fair, Dubai, 2014, India Art Fair, 2015, Dhaka Art Summit, 2014 and Asian Biennale, Bangladesh, 2014.
