    Responsibilities of the Caregiver

    The caregiver is responsible for providing a safe and developmentally appropriateday care programme for children. The early childhood caregiver has several

    responsibilities within the child care facility. The responsibilities of the caregiver

    are as follows:

    1. To provide through play environment for children.

    2.To be knowledgeable about child development and appropriate practice.3.To plan and implement learning experiences and an environment which meetsthe needs and interests of children in all developmental areas.

    4.To keep accurate records and observations on children.5.To organize resources for the childrens program.

    6.To promote the integration of special needs children and be aware of thebenefits involved.7.To provide a safe environment by maintaining provincial standards.8.To attend monthly staff meetings and weekly planning meetings.9.To accept, welcome and guide ECD students.10.To act as a practicum supervisor for ECD students.11. To make sure the daycare and play areas are safe for children (i.e. by keeping

    all dangerous areas, materials, etc., out of reach of children, by using safe toys and

    equipment, by having safe ways of doing things with children, etc.)2) To make sure the program helps children to stay healthy (i.e. by making surechildren get proper food, rest, time to play adult attention, good hygiene, etc.)

    3) To make sure children are supervised at all times.4) To notify parents of any health or other problems noticed about a child.

    5) To call the parent, or if necessary, an ambulance, if a child is suddenly ill orinjured.

    6) To be able to handle an injury, emergency or fire in a safe way.

    7) To make sure that all people over 12 years of age (and not in care) in thedaycare have

    had a Criminal Record Check.

    8) To makes sure that there are appropriate qualifications for substitute caregiversand other employees.

    9) To notify parents of the name of the substitute caregiver that may be used.10) To have a written discipline policy that is acceptable under the Child Care

    Regulations, and to follow this policy.

    Communication:

    1.To establish positive relationships with children, parents and other staff.2.To maintain confidentiality over center information and family information.

    3.To guide childrens behavior appropriately.4.To work effectively and professionally as a team member.5.To act as a resource and support to parents.6.To promote a positive image to the public.7.To act as a resource to the ECD department.
