Team Unbreakable CollaborationThe Child and Family Centre is collaborating with CameronHelps for an Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant to place Team Unbreakable Programs in Sudbury.

The fi rst and very successful "Unbreakable Spring Open" championed by Josh Tillson (student at Lockerby S.S.) and Lauren Beaudry (student at Lo-Ellen Park S.S.) and in partneship with CameronHelps, was held on April 23, 2017.

CameronHelps is a non-profi t umbrella organization with the objective of preventing youth suicide. Their fl agship program, Team Unbreakable, is school, community and hospital based providing a running and mental health education program to middle, high school, college and university students. It is one of the few, if not the only, program to deliver the benefi t of running and an active mental health tool-kit.

According to Carl Morel, E.D. of CameronHelps,: “The program could not go forward without the initiative of Josh Tillson, and Lauren Beaudry, and the on the ground support of the Child and Family Centre”.

The “learn to run” program aims to support better youth mental health. The participants train as a group to run/walk a 5km goal event. During the course of the training they learn about better mental health and the impact of exercise.

Other partners in this collaboration include: the Mental Health and Physical Activity Research Centre of Toronto, Laurentian University Department of Social Work, Shkagamik-Kwe Health Centre and Rainbow District School Board.

On July 4th, the Child and Family Centre expanded its walk-in service in Sudbury to fi ve days a week. This represents a signifi cant investment of resources for CFC and demonstrates its commitment to the children and families that they service in the Sudbury and Manitoulin area.

This expansion will serve their objective to deliver mental health services to children and families when they need it; no waiting, no appointment.

Paul Jalbert, Director of Clinical Services at CFC stated: "This is a bold and important next step in addressing barriers to accessing services. With the support of our staff and with the collaboration of our community partners, mindSPACE will continue to evolve and play an essential role in our service delivery."

MINDSPACE - EXPANDING IN SUDBURY

On June 1st, 2017, the Child and Family Centre hosted the inaugural Northern Data Summit. The Lead Agencies in attendance were Thunder Bay Children’s Centre – Thunder Bay, Algoma Family Services - Sault-Ste-Marie, Child and Family Centre – Sudbury/ Manitoulin, Firefl y Northwest - Kenora/Rainy River and HANDS - North Bay.

The summit provided an occasion to discuss some of the successes, challenges and opportunities surrounding data governance and data needs within the north. As a result, the summit yielded recommendations that will guide the strategic direction and goals surrounding data-related priorities.

Rainbow Backpacks is a one day interactive training session focusing on engaging and working with the LGBTQ2+ community. It explores sexual orientation and gender identity, expression through discussions on terminology, stages of development, issues facing LGBTQ+ children, youth and families as well as ways to be supportive, inclusive and an ally to this community.

The Child and Family Centre recently sent 2 staff to the Rainbow Backpack training with plans for the remainder of staff to be trained in the fall of 2017.

RAINBOW BACKPACK TRAIN THE TRAINER

From April through to June the Child and Family Centre, in partnership with Yoga instructors, Jodi Fraser and Kristin Morin, ran a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Yoga pilot project. Participants for this project included staff from the Children’s Aid Society, Children’s Community Network and the Child and Family Centre.

The purpose of the pilot project was to introduce the evidence-based practice of the mindfulness-based stress reduction approach and yoga to the self-care practices of clinicians. At the end of the three month initiative, a post-evaluation was administered to participants. This will serve to examine the effects of these two self-care approaches on their physical health and resilience. Stay tuned for the fi nal results!

MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS REDUCTION

AND YOGA PILOT

The Child and Family Centre, in partnership with 10 community partners and 3 school boards, hosted a variety of events during Child and Youth Mental Health Week from May 1 - 7, 2017.

Over 200 people, more than half of them being high school students, attended the six activities that took place over fi ve days. It is the fi rst time in the agency's history where there were fi ve consecutive days of activities associated with mental health.

"Child and Youth Mental Health Week is important to raise awareness and advocate for child and youth mental health services. It is an opportunity to communicate to the public how and where to access these important and timely services" said Mark Fraser, CFC's Director of System and Quality Management.

The week acted as an offi cial kick off for mindSPACE, CFC’s free walk-

in mental health services requiring no appointment, located in Sudbury at 65 Evergreen Street and in Espanola at 407 Centre Street.

The collaboration between CFC and Laurentian University yielded a Mental Wellness through physical activity event facilitated by Carolyn Crang and seven pre-service teacher candidates of the Laurentian University School of Education. 25 students from École secondaire Champlain, and 25 students from Bishop Alexander Secondary School participated in yoga, strength training and racket sports.

"This activity provided Laurentian teacher candidates the opportunity to work with secondary students, and sharing activities with them; the focus on the connection between mental health and physical activity was stressed in all sessions” said Carolyn Crang.
