Message from the Chair

The role of Children’s Hospices UK has never been more important and more relevant than it is today. It has been an extraordinary year which hascreatedanumberofverysignificantopportunitiesforusandthe44children’s hospice services we represent.

Thepublicationof‘BetterCare:BetterLives’,theGovernment’sfirststrategy for children’s palliative care in England, marks the start of a new and promising era. Published in February 2008, the report promises a step changethatcouldmakeasignificantdifferencetothousandsofchildrenand young people who are not expected to reach adulthood, and their families.

Children’s palliative care has never been so high up the Government’s agendabutwewillhavetofighttokeepitthereinthefaceofamuchmorechallengingfinancialenvironment.Asaresult, ourroleasthenationalvoice for children’s hospice services has never been more crucial. It is vital that we continue to work with our partners and members to ensure that the aspirations set out in the strategy are delivered. In particular, we must ensure that the strategy leads to more local spending on children’s hospices and other children’s palliative care services.

Moving forward, we will develop our priorities and resources to ensure thattheyreflecttheneedsofchildren’shospiceservicesatthiscriticaltimein the evolution of children’s palliative care. By working together well, we will be stronger and more effective in everything we do, not just in England, but across all four countries. Together we will make a real difference to the thousands of children, young people and families who need our help and support.
