The definitions of Trauma and Post traumatic
stress disorder continues to evolve. According to the DSM 5 : Definition of trauma “exposure to
actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. Can be actual victim or witness.

PTSD
The PTSD construct has moved beyond a narrow fear-based anxiety disorder to include dysphoric/anhedonic and externalities PTSD phenotype. The dissociative sub-type may open the way to a fresh approach to complex PTSD. The preschool sub-type incorporates important developmental factors affecting the expression of PTSD in young children.

Psychologist Dawson Church, PhD, from his
book, Psychological Trauma, defines a traumatizing event as something that is:
Perceived as a threat to the person’s physical
survival
Overwhelms their coping capacity, producing
a sense of powerlessness
Produces a feeling of isolation and aloneness
Violates their expectations

to understand the roots of trauma in a child or in an adult begins by understanding your own
experiences of trauma and including yourself as part of the equation.

Trauma is often the root cause of many somatic
based and organ-based pathologies, remember that in your diagnostic and treatment approach.
In your recommendations to your patients
consider offering any of the mind body medicine tools discussed or referenced here today, they
are proven, quick and effective, easy to learn and easy to teach in a small group setting or one
on one in an office-based setting.
When considering the high incidence of trauma
in our patient population consider that it is likely that there is an element of trauma in every
patient that you see.
